FTT Newsletter #4
September 2014
Welcome FTT members. The FTT team has
been busy over the last few months. We
have held several functions and made a
major commitment to sponsor Ben Wright a
Powerlifter striving to make the Australian
Powerlifting team and then qualify and be
selected in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Check out Ben’s latest results (154kg lift) at wheelchairsportswa.org.au/powerlifters-raise-the-bar/ Congratulations to Ben who has made the
Australian team competing in the Malaysian
Open Powerlifting Championships in KL in
November 2013.
Also, welcome to all our new FTT members,
we hope you can attend a few of our
functions throughout the year.
October 6th FTT AGM BBQ (pronounced Fttag-mmm-baa-bee-queue)
Sunday the 6th of October at 4pm we have our very first AGM. If you would
like to come along or have something to say, please drop me an email.
Normal AGM activities will occur as per the agenda on the AGM invite.
October 26th – A day at the Belmont races
We are heading back to the races. We have organised entry onto the
course, a three course lunch and a bottle of wine on the table in the Terrace
area, all for only $57. You can then have a little flutter on the horses and a
day out. If you are interested please let myself or Mike Heath know and we
will book you a place.
November, December and beyond
At the AGM we will be setting out upcoming 2013 and 2014 events
calendar, so please keep an eye out for emails on what’s coming up next.
Christmas lunch? Our Christmas lunch last year was held at the Court
Wine Bar. Unfortunately since then the bar has closed, so we will be
looking for a new venue and will get more details to you soon.
As we head into the ‘silly’ season we will be trying to find a couple of worthy
events for FTT to volunteer and help out those in need.
The inaugural FTT Committee are
Mark Allday, Mike Heath, Steve
Charles, Gerry Killian, Neil Jones,
Jay Wilhelm and Mike O’Reilly.
Contact us for more details if you
would like to be more involved.

We had a BBQ planned for the kids and
parents at the hospital, but due to bad
weather the BBQ was cancelled. We will be
looking to lock another one in early in 2014.
What a great turn out. Thanks to everyone that
turned up on the night@ We had two tables going all
night and raised a total of $540. There were plenty
of prizes handed out and a lot was learnt. Huge
thanks to Kelvin for running the night, teaching us all
the basics and some of the more detailed rules of
the game. Thanks also to Adam for running the
second table and handing out a poker lesson to all
of us, except Merv who managed to get the better of
him in the second game.
I felt like a real novice (that’s me on the right), but I
learnt a lot.
It was such a success it will be on the events
calendar in 2014, for sure!
Can you explain that to
me again please Kelvin?
In June, members of the committee were invited to attend a
basketball game as part of our process to determine if we
thought FTT could be more involved with Wheelchair sports.
It resulted in a great turnout of FTT members to a basketball
game in July@ see how many on the next page!

The game was fast@ furious@ skilful... with plenty
of hits and spills. It was incredible to watch and
very entertaining.
Over 40 FTT members, family, friends and their
children turned up to see the Perth Wheelcats have
a huge win. We filled a section of the grandstand
and made nearly as much noise as 43,500 Dockers
fans on a Saturday night. And as an added bonus
the Wheelcats had a huge win. FTT members
donated $320 to the Wheelchair sports just on
donations at the door, let alone the raffle tickets
sales. Thanks again for coming along.
DEFENCE!!!! DEFENCE!!!!
The night started with us screaming at the TV to see Port beat Collingwood. How
good was that!!! Then we were all introduced to Ben Wright and found out a lot
more about Ben’s story and his aspirations to lift over 200kg and eventually make
the Australian team to represent Australia at the Rio Olympics. He even offered
to have ‘FTT’ tattooed onto his forehead. Now that’s commitment!

The night then degraded into a combination of drinking, eating, jokes, quizzes and
the hunt for the rare but popular ca-chinkas. The competition hotted up for prizes
with first and last positions swapping around until Neil shot to the lead mid-season
and Mackie grabbed hold of last place with both hands@ and that is where they
both stayed!

lost Ca-Chinka tribe.

A huge thanks to all our sponsors on the night. Please support them where and
whenever you can@
And of course, thanks to our hosts Mike and Leanne for letting us use their home.
Next year’s footy trip will align with the Melbourne Comedy Festival which runs from
Wednesday the 26th of March to Sunday the 20th of April. Once the AFL releases
the 2014 fixtures, we will let you know which weekend we are planning to go.
But@start planning for it now by saving those Frequent Flyer Points.
This is always a good weekend and always a laugh.
Thanks for all your support. Cheers, Mark Allday
