Intervention examines the historical impact of industrial chemicals and biotechnology on our food crops. Using appropriation, redaction and manipulation, Kirsten Stolle critiques the popular narrative and explores the complex relationship between economy and ecology. Consisting of carefully composed collages, stitched works, a site-specific 1950s kitchen installation with custom-designed wallpaper and a manipulated audio overlay, Stolle creates an integrated environment where viewers can reflect on the long-standing influence of agrichemical corporations.

ANIMAL PHARM

NEEDLED

Living her early years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kirsten Stolle was greatly influenced by food movement politics of the 1990s. As a vegetarian looking for alternatives to the industrialized food system, the Bay Area provided a rich resource. With the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in 1996, Stolle began examining this controversial technology with both an aesthetic and consumer’s eye. In 2008 she developed Genetically Commodified as a way to make sense out of the overwhelming proliferation and impact of GMOs.

Stolle’s work is included in the permanent collections of the San Jose Museum of Art (CA), Crocker Museum of Art (CA), and Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MN). Exhibitions include Dolby Chadwick Gallery (CA), Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, (NYC), Torpedo Factory (VA), Roos Arts (NY), University of North Carolina (NC), Jonathan Ferrara Gallery (LA), William King Museum (VA), Monterey Museum of Art (CA), Truman State University (MO), and the San Jose Museum of Art (CA).

Stolle’s drawings have been published in Made in Mind Magazine, Poetry Magazine, Vhcle Magazine, DIALOGIST, SLICE, Manifest International Drawing Annual (INDA 7), New American Paintings, Ignatian Literary Magazine and Spolia Literary Magazine. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a Dave Bown Project Award, grants from San Francisco Arts Commission, Puffin Foundation, Artists’ Fellowship Inc., Change Inc., and the Creative Capacity Fund. She has been awarded residencies at the Ucross Foundation, Millay Colony, Blue Mountain Center, Oregon College of Arts & Crafts, Spiro Arts Center, Anderson Center, and Ballinglen Arts Foundation.

Stolle received a BA in Visual Arts from Framingham State College, and completed studies at Richmond College (London, England) and Massachusetts College of Art (Boston, MA). She currently lives in Western North Carolina.
