THIS IS STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is the common

name given to the amily o

alloys containing steel* with a

minimum chromium content o

12%. A chromium-rich, passive

oxide lm orms on the surace

providing stainless steel with its

unique anti-corrosive properties.

This protective lm will constantly

repair itsel or example, when

stainless steel is cut. The grade

o stainless steel generally used

in kitchens and bathrooms also

contains at least 8% nickel and is

known as austenitic stainless steel.

The addition o nickel allows the

stainless steel to become moreductile making it easy to work and

orm. Where higher resistance to

corrosion is required (or example

in laboratories), molybdenum is

added to orm the so-called acid

resisting grades.

HISTORY AND

CONTROVERSY

Stainless steel is said to have been

discovered, by accident, in Europe.

The Frenchman, LN Vauquelin

had discovered Chromium in

1797 but it was not until circa

1900 that the benets o addingChromium to Iron were realised.

Henry Brearly is widely accredited

with discovering stainless steel

(or use in gun barrels), Sheeld,

1912. However, Benno Strauss

and Eduard Maurer, or Krupps

o Germany, may have created a

version o stainless steel already

in 1909. Yet beore this, the

renowned Swedish artist, Anders

Zorn (1860-1943) had brought an

early version o the stainless steel

sink home with him rom USA.

The sink is displayed to this day

at Zornhuset, Dalarna, Sweden.

BRUSHED SATIN FINISH

Surace nish selection should

balance appearance with required

perormance o the product

in question. Various nishing

methods are available but wet or

dry mechanical polishing is used

or most sheet stainless steels.

Average roughness o nish (Ra)

critically determines the suitability

o the material or its intended

purpose. GEC Andersons

brushed satin stainless steel is

achieved through a dry-polishing

process resulting in a greater

Ra value than is commonly used.

The result is a more practical andeasily maintained surace with

a greater resistance to marking

and scratching. A lustre and shine

distinguishes it rom so-called

dull-polished nishes (that are

more coarsely grained) but

neither is it highly polished (which

is more susceptible to marking

and, thereore, highly impractical).

TEXTURED FINISH

The raised pattern o textured

stainless steel acilitates drainage,

resists damage, smudges and

scratches. Textured nish appliesto the entire worksurace (not

bowls) with a maximum size o

2400 x 1150mm. Textured nish

is not available or L-shaped or

U-shaped worktops.

GAUGE AND GRADE OF

STAINLESS STEEL

Generally, the selection o

gauge (1, 1.25, 1.5 or 2mm)

is let to the expertise o our

actory, depending on the

size and nature o the product

being manuactured.

Domestic grade (EN 1.4301,

also known as 18/8 or AISI 304

grade or SIS2333) is used in most

products. For equipment destined

or use in laboratories and

certain special environments,

acid-resisting grade (EN 1.4401,

also known as 18/12 or AISI316/319 or SIS2343) is used.

continuous piece, to the exact

shape and size prescribed and

with NO JOINS at sink bowl(s),

edges or upstands. Worktops

are fat (not sloping or futed)

with 18 mm bonded substrate,

or strength, rigidity and ease

o xing. Installation is simpleand rapid with no urther work

on site required.
