Human geography is the study of people’s interactions with one another and with the surrounding environment. A division within human geography is cultural geography, which is the study of various cultural elements—such as religion, language, economics, music, and art—and how these elements affect the ways people behave.

As the Reformation took place in Europe, the cultural geography of the region changed in fundamental ways. The Catholic Church, which had dominated the religious landscape for centuries, was now being challenged and questioned, with the result being not only the development of various Protestant religions but also reform and revitalization within the Catholic Church.

Instead of being almost exclusively Catholic, Europe after the Reformation was divided among several different religions: Catholic, Calvinist, Lutheran, Anglican (Church of England), and others. At the same time, the Ottoman Empire in the east remained Orthodox, and the majority of the eastern Mediterranean and North African regions remained Muslim. Caption: Between 1517, when Martin Luther
