GeoSwath Plus Features

GeoSwath Plus is a Phase Measuring Bathymetric Sonar System. It simultaneously acquires swath bathymetry and side scan data. Its dual transducer configuration has a field of view of over 240º. The usable depth information is limited only by the strength of the signal scattered back from the seafloor, thus achieving a swath coverage of up to 12 times the water depth.

GeoSwath Plus is a productive survey tool for the shallow water environment.

Three different frequency versions are available, 125, 250 and 500 kHz with depth performances of 200, 100 and 50 m respectively to match your survey requirements.

The system can be deployed on dedicated survey vessels as well as on vessels of op-portunity by use of versatile over-the-side, bow, moon pool or hull mount configu-rations.

The standard system comprises a rugged sonar head and a dedicated deck unit in-cluding a PC running the GS+ software package. The software enables the system to undertake all tasks from data acquisition to the production of the final bathymetry and side scan data products. Interfaces to all major hydrographic survey software suites are also available.

GeoSwath Plus offers a turn-key solution for bathymetry and side scan surveying.

Versions of GeoSwath Plus for AUV and ROV deployment are available. The small size, low power consumption, standard interfacing and depth rating of up to 4000 m makes it the ideal choice as a survey payload sensor.

GeoSwath Plus Compact offers small size and lightweight components and splash protection for deployment from small crafts.

Applications

The wide swath coverage of up to 12 times water depth and the co-registered and geo-referenced side scan data makes GeoSwath Plus the ideal tool for shallow water survey environments. Typical applications such as hydrographic charting, dredging and inspection surveys to environmental assessment and habitat mapping make the system a proven and trusted solution with the global survey community.

System Configuration

The GeoSwath Plus turn-key solution comprises a dual transducer head with ver-satile mounting options together with a deck unit containing the complete sonar electronics together with a high spec PC, running the GS+ software. The software provides full acquisition, calibration and data processing capabilities for producing the final bathymetry and side scan data products. All customary ancillary sensors can be directly interfaced. The rugged port and starboard transducers, available in three frequency options (125, 250, 500 kHz), can be attached to a supplied sonar head assembly for boat over-the side or bow-mount options, which also can accom-modate a range of ancillary sensors. Alternatively they can be deployed on bespoke boat hull mount assemblies. The compact deck unit contains the complete system electronics as well as a high spec PC.

GeoSwath Plus Compact

• Compact turn-key system

• Truly portable, pre-calibrateable

• Splash protected deck unit - IP54 rated

• 24 VDC, 40 W operation • Operated from laptop PC

The portable GeoSwath Plus Compact is designed for small craft operation. It com-prises a modified dual transducer head and a splash protected deck unit, containing the complete sonar electronics, which are interfaced via an Ethernet connection to a laptop PC running the GS+ survey software. Optionally it can also be operated as a stand alone unit with splash proof monitor, keyboard and mouse.

The head incorporates a port and starboard integrated transducer as well the required ancillary sensors and can be pre-calibrated. Due to its minimal size and weight of less than 17 kg including peripheral sensors it offers a truly portable solu-tion.

The deck unit is splash protected and operating from a 24 V power supply with only 40 W power consumption can be fitted onto the smallest of crafts.

The system is available in all three frequency versions, 125, 250 and 500 kHz.

GeoSwath Plus AUV and ROVGeoSwath Plus payloads with depth ratings of up to 4000 m can be readily integrat-ed into any autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). With data coverage of up to 12 times the vehicle’s fly altitude and low power consumption GeoSwath Plus offers unsurpassed efficiency for all military and civil survey applications.

The GeoSwath Plus AUV hous-ing contains the sonar electronics together with a high-spec small form factor PC and memory for local data storage. Operating mode is either free running or via an interface to the AUV’s control and peripheral sensors using Ethernet and serial connec-tions. The small size of the port and starboard transducers allow them to be fixed in any suitable position on the vehicle.

The GeoSwath Plus ROV module is connected to either a laptop PC or a deck unit on board the survey vessel via a transparent Ethernet link. Periph-eral sensors are mounted on the vehicle and connected to the module by flying leads, thus giving full flexibility in the choice of location for maximum seabed coverage and low ambient acoustic noise. The included software package provides easy system set-up, full acquisition, calibration and data processing capabilities for producing the final charts, which include bathymetry map and side scan mosaic data products.

GeoSwath Plus Remus 100The GeoSwath Plus 500 kHz module for Remus 100 is the ideal combined swath bathymetry and side scan solution with accuracies exceeding IHO-44 Special Order specifications. The seabed coverage of up to 12 times the vehicles operating altitude combined with the low power consumption allows for longer mission duration with a very high efficiency, giving enhanced survey productivity.

GeoAcoustics Ltd. and Hydroid Inc. are both Kongsberg Maritime companies. This integration combines the industry’s most successful phase measuring bathymetric sonar with the world’s most popular man-portable AUV. Through linking these two advanced technologies Kongsberg Maritime continues to bring the full subsea pic-ture into sharper focus.

GeoSwath Plus SoftwareGeoSwath Plus is supplied with a complete software package for data acquisition, system calibration, data processing and generation of digital terrain models as well as side scan mosaics. Data quality control and visualisation are also an important part of the package.

GeoSwath Plus can also be operated via Ethernet connection by third party hydro-graphic survey software.

Data can be exported in most standard formats allowing it to be processed, visual-ised and incorporated into many processing streams. This includes the Generic Sen-sor Format, allowing CUBE processing algorithms to be applied.

System set-upA graphical user interface helps to set-up GeoSwath Plus and its ancillary sensors for survey work.

System calibrationAutomated area based patch test calibration makes it easy to calibrate the sonar system.

Data processingA set of specific filters allows removal of outliers and noise before passing the bathymetry data on to the gridding process. Tidal, motion and sound velocity corrections are applied

Data visualisationDigital terrain models and side scan mosaics can be visualised and assessed using a range of tools includ-ing 3D views.

Sonar Technology

The GeoSwath Plus is a Phase Measuring Bathymetric Sonar System. It simultane-ously acquires swath bathymetry and side scan data. Its dual transducer configura-tion has a field of view of over 240º. The usable depth information is limited only by the strength of the signal scattered back from the seafloor, thus achieving a swath coverage of up to 12 times water depth.

Each transducer array is comprised of five ceramic staves; one to transmit and four to receive. After transmission one of the receive stave registers the amplitude of the signal scattered from the seafloor and uses this to produce true digital side scan data. The phase of the sonar signal on the four receive staves is used to determine the angle of arrival of the sonar signal. The range is determined from the two-way travel time. This range and angle gives a depth measurement. Many thousands of range-angle pairs are collected for each ping, giving the very high data density seen in GeoSwath Plus raw data.

The phase measuring algorithm determines the direction of the returning sound with an angle resolution of a fraction of a degree (c. 0.03º). The range (found from the timing) is measured to millimetre accuracy. Over 40 amplitude, range and angle samples are collected per metre slant range. This performance allows the sonar system to exceed the accuracy required by the latest IHO standards for bathymetric surveying.
