Six Germantown High School soc-cer players announced their collegeplans during National Signing DayFeb. 4.

Feb. 4 was National Signing Day,the first day when high school athletescould formally accept scholarships forseveral sports, including football andsoccer. Others announced their planfor schools that dont offer scholarships.

Its not an easy task to play at the

collegiate level. Its a testimony to theseindividuals and the work ethic theyvehad since they played in club, sincethey were able to kick a soccer ball, upto where they are now, Germantowngirls soccer Coach Paul Sikinger said. Its going to be kind of cool to see howthey do in the future in regard to play-ing at the next program. But all the hardwork theyve put up to this point, itsgoing to pay off today.

The four girls players announcingtheir plans were Jenni Poss and DaniSchuyler (both Cardinal Stritch), JensenMeyer (Carroll College) andMackenzie Challoner (Winona State).

I just fit well to the campus and likethe (team) there. It just suited me,Challoner said of Winona State.

Challoner said Winona State, anNCAA Division II school, first

expressed interest at the end of her jun-ior year. Challoner also talked withNorthern Illinois, UW-Green Bay andUW-Milwaukee.

Winona State was just a better fitfor me, she said.

Challoner played two years on theGermantown varsity squad in additionto playing the club season with NorthShore United.

Schuyler said Stritch startedexpressing interest in October 2013.She said there were a few other schoolsin the running.

I really liked the team, I liked thegirls that went there, I like the area. Ilike that its by bigger colleges but itsstill in the city, Schuyler said of Stritch.

She said she plans to major in bio-chemistry.

Schuyler has played on the varsitysquad for the past three seasons atGermantown. She currently plays withthe Bavarians during the club season.

Poss said Stritch feels like Im athome. She said the Bavarians clubteam she plays for had a fun gameagainst the Stritch squad. Afterward,Poss was contacted by the Stritchcoaches and was invited to practicewith the team.

Poss said she was talking withViterbo and Winona State along with

some Division III schools during therecruiting process.

She said she plans to major in nurs-ing.

Poss has played on theGermantown varsity team the pastthree seasons and was an all-confer-ence honorable mention last year.

Stritch is an NAIA Division IIschool.

Stritch Coach Kevin Brennan notedthat Sikinger is a Stritch alumnus and he

    The Germantown School Board offered

a total of 25 seats through the open enroll-ment and Chapter 220 programs.

Open enrollment is a state programthrough which non-district students canattend district schools, with parents respon-sible for transporting students to the school.Under the Chapter 220 program, minoritystudents from Milwaukee Public Schoolscan attend suburban districts while nonmi-nority students suburban schools can attendMilwaukee Public Schools.

During the Jan. 26 School Board meet-ing, Jayne Borst, Chapter 220 and openenrollment coordinator, said the goal ishave Chapter 220 students begin at early agrade as possible. Under the proposalbefore the board, six seats were opened upat the third grade level for Chapter 220 stu-dents while all the remaining seats three

in fourth grade, 13 in fifth grade and threein the ninth grade were opened up foropen enrollment students.

Borst added that students who are cur-rently attending the district along with theirsiblings would be first priority for the openseats.

Board member Bruce Warnimont saidhe would oppose the making the additionalseats available through the Chapter 220and open enrollment students.

Just because we have the room nowwe dont need to cram the box completelyfull, Warnimont said. I realize this is atremendous revenue opportunity for theGermantown School District, but werebursting already.

Board member Lester Spies replied that

no seats were opened at the kindergartenthrough second grade level because thereisnt any space available at those level.

We just dont have the space for it,Spies said at those levels.

Board President Robert Soderberg indi-cate that even with the added seats offeredthrough the two programs, the district willbe within its enrollment metrics for the com-ing school year.

The motion was approved 5-2, withWarnimont and Sarah Larson votingagainst it.

Finance Committee items approvedThe board approved spending $5,000

related to staging a standards summitand Florian Conference & Banquet CenterMarch 20-21.

The board also approved linkingKennedy Middle School to the villagemunicipal water system at a cost of$114,241 in plumbing. Board memberMichael Loth said the move will transitionthe school from its well system and allow forthe possibility of having a sprinkler systeminstalled in the school in the future.

The school will be linked to the villagemunicipal system through a connection fromWilliams Drive.

In another matter, Loth said student feesat the elementary and middle school levelswill not change while high school fees arestill open, with that item to be discussed ata future committee meeting.

By Tresa EricksonLighting is one of the most important

features of a home, indoors and out. It pro-vides illumination for tasks inside andkeeps burglars away outside. When cho-sen well, lighting can also enhance ahomes beauty. Here are some tips thenext time you change or add to your out-door lighting.

Outdoor lighting comes in many types.Post lights are mounted on a post, which is

usually located near the driveway. Walllights are mounted on walls near exteriordoorson each side of the garage door, for example. Ceiling mount lights aremounted on the ceiling of a porch or por-tico to illuminate the front entrance.Hanging lights serve the same purpose asceiling mount lights but make more of astatement in grand entrances and tallporches.

Make a list of the outdoor lights youneed and the amount you have to spend, and then get ready to shop. Outdoor lightscome in a variety of styles. Look for a stylethat complements the style of your home. While lanterns might work well for a

beach house, they may not suit your con-temporary home. You might need a sleek-er, cleaner style.

Finish is another aspect to consider.Again, look to your house as a guide. If

you have a lot of brass, brass fixtthe way to go. If you have a lotwork, look for black fixtures. If youlot of chrome, look for chrome fixt

Scale is vital. Too small or too lights can detract from the beautyhome. Look for appropriate sizedyou are looking for wall lights fostory home, for example, you shouon lights that are 18 to 24 inchesattention to the elements in the arethe lights will go. While you mighanging lights, having one in yoportico might not work. You doguests hitting their head on the ligtime they enter or exit your home.

Want to make your home realUpdate the outdoor lighting. Dyour needs and look for the right ish and scale to create a safe, beautiful home.

    Safe, secure and beautiful
