    3. Grille: A louvered or perforated covering for an air passage opening which can be located on a wall, ceiling or floor.

    4. Air Supply: The air delivered to the conditioned space and used fur ventilation, heating, cooling, humidification or dehumidification.

    5. Air Diffuser: A circular, square or rectangular air distribution outlet, generally located in the ceiling and comprised of deflecting members discharging supply air in various directions and planes, and arranged to promote mixing of primary air with secondary room air.

6, Outlet Slotted: A long narrow air distribution outlet, comprised of deflecting members, located in the ceiling sidewall or sill with an aspect ratio greater than 10. (The aspect ratio is the ratio of the length to the width of the closed rectangular opening) designed to distribute supply air in varying directions and planes and arranged to promote mixing of primary air and secondary room air.

    7. Register: A grille equipped with an integral damper.

    S. Damper: A device used to vary the volume of air passing through an air outlet, air inlet orduct.

9, Radius of Diffusion: The horizontal axial distance an airstream travels after leaving an air outlet before the maximum stream velocity is reduced to a specified terminal level.

    10. Face Area: The total plane area of the portion of a grille, bounded by a line tangent to the outer edges of the openings through which air can pass.

    11. Effective Area: The net area of an outlet or inlet device through which air can pass, equal to the free area times the coefficient of discharge.

  • SUPPLY GRILLE AND REGISTER ENGINEERING DATA

The most important thing in any air conditioning system is that the selection of a Suitable Register or a Grille to ensure satisfactory performance. For this the following charts were given to help you in predicting performance. In making selections, sound Engineering judgement is essential as the permissible drops and noise levels can change greatly with the usage of space, location of obstacles and available clear mounting heights. So, before selection give close attention to the following considerations.

In general, the occupant should not be subjected to velocities above 50 FPM for an extended period of time as the air velocities below 15 FPM leave a feeling of stagnation and velocities above 65 FPM create drafts so these charts are based on a terminal velocity of 50 FPM in determining throw. It is assured that longer throws will be required larger drops are probably satisfactory. In more exacting applications outlets should be sized with shorter throws, smaller drops and lower noise levels.

Upto 800 FPM velometer velocity, the noise caused by the grill itself is negligible. The engineer should consider acoustical insulation, vibration etc, because the vibration through ductwork or fan noise may be transmitted to the zone of occupancy.

Considerable caution must be exercised in selecting and positioning the grille to determine that the air will not drop into the occupied zone. However, it should be also kept in mind that the other extreme of overthrow can cause objectionable down drafts of air along any wall or surface.

Generally, prescribed rule is to select a grille that will have a throw of approximately 3/4 of the distance to the opposite wall with its termination at approximately six feet above the floor level as shown in the Fig. 1, below.

For sizes which are not listed, it is suggested that full particulars to be send our Engineering Department at Riyadh for recommendations.

  • SUPPLY GRILLE AND REGISTER ENGINEERING DATA

Blade Deflections The blade deflections upon which the

performance data is based are obtained by the individual adjustment in our supply grilles and registers. Altering the blade settings, drop, noise and total pressure. See Fig.2.

Guidance for Reading Tables on Following Pages: Variable deflection settings to satisfy all air

distribution requirements are obtained by individual adjustment of airfoil blades in our supply grilles and registers.

To obtain long throw and narrow air patterns use A' and 22'12' deflection.

For shorter throw and wide air patterns use upto 45' deflection, or more. Performance data shown in the selection charts on the following pages is based on double deflection grilles with vertical airfoil blades at a', 22V,' and 45' as illustrated below.

Throw Requirement: The basis performance data will show two throws

values. The maximum throw is the distance of air travel to a point having air velocity of 50 FPM and the minimum throw is the distance of air travel to a point having air velocity of 100 FPM.

Generally, the throw distance requirement is determined from the supply air terminal to the opposite I \ wall or to the intersection of its air stream with air being delivered from another supply air terminal.

Drop: Drop is a vertical distance between the lowest

horizontal plane having 50 FPM of air down stream and the centre of the core.

Velocity: The average face velocity on the grille's surface

as measured with an ANLOR Velometer with tip no. 2220A minimum of four readings should be taken at random over the face of the grille and averaged. See Fig. 3.

Total Pressure: Total pressure is measured in inches of water

gauge (w.g.). If static pressure drop is required calculate the CORE AREA = (Nominal Length - %) x (Nominal Width - %) and divide the CFM by this area to determine the CORE VELOCITY. Using this velocity, enter table 1 to find the velocity pressure substracting velocity pressure from total pressure gives static pressure drop across the grille.

  • BALANCING DATA

Step 1 : To determine CFM of the Supply Grille or Register, an Alnor Velometer with Tip No. 2220A is used.

Step 2: Locate velometer jet in the air stream as shown in the figure below. Take a minimum of four velocity readings at random across the grille face and average them to determine the velocity.

Step 3: From the performance table select proper Ak factor for the size of supply grille or register tested. Using the following formula, calculate the air flow rate:

CFM = Ak x Average Velocity.

    EXAMPLE:

Determine the CFM through a 12" x 12" SV6-11. The blades are set for a 45' deflection pattern. The instrument to be used is an Alnor Velometer with a 2220A Tip.

    1. Position the Alnor Velometer with a 2220A tip as shown in the fig. and find velocity at a minimum of 4 points at random. (Suppose the average velocity is found to be 300 FPM )

To determine velocity using ALNOR with Tip No. 2220A

    2. From the performance table select Ak factor for the given size 45' deflection blade setting.

    Ak = 0.52 Sq. ft.

    3. CFM = Ak x Ave. measured velocity. = 0.52 sq. ft. x 300 fpm = 155 cfm.

  • CEILING DIFFUSERS ENGINEERING DATA

Throw: The horizontal distance in feet where the

highest sustained velocity has been reduced to 50 feet per minute. The throw values shown are for the diffuser mounted flush to the ceiling. Throw values shown are based on isothermal air.

Velocity: The average feet per minute at the diffuser

surface as measured with an ALNOR Velometer with tip no. 2220A. A minimum of four readings should be taken at random over the face of the diffuser and averaged.

Total Pressure : Measured in inches of water gage(in. w.g.). If

static pressure drop is required, calculate the core area. The core area equals the nominal length minus 1/4 inch. Divide the CFM by the core area to determine the core velocity. Using this velocity, enter Table 1 to find the velocity pressure. Subtract velocity pressure from total pressure to get the static pressure drop across the diffuser.

  • r, \ Pattern Requirement:

The pattern requirement is determined by the shape of the space to be conditioned, the number of diffusers in it, and the type and location of lighting fixtures or other devices mounting on the ceiling. For example; a two way opposite pattern CD9-2R, CD9-2S might be used in a corridor. A larger area can often be divided into squares and or rectangles of nearly equal size, and, if a diffuser can be located in the centre of each of these areas, a pattern CD9-4S or CD9-4R could be used for fourway delivery.

Diffuser Selection Guide Lines: Before selecting the diffuser pattern and size

for a conditioned arEla, it will be necessary to obtain the following.

    1. CFM for each diffuser. 2. Location of diffusers. 3. Ceiling height. 4. Type of occu pancy.

The fonowing is a suggested method for the selection of diffusers.

    1. Divide the total air supply for the area by the number of diffusers you wish to install, to find the flow for each diffuser.

    2. Consult Table 3 for maximum CFM based on ceiling height and temperature differential.

    3. From the performance data tables, select"the type of diffuser required to suit your air distribution needs.

    4. Based upon diffuser type and flow, select the size of diffuser in the selection tables for the required throw.

    5. Consult sound level Table 2 to check that the NC level is suitable for the type of occupancy.

    Maximum Ceiling Temperature Max. CFM

TABLE 3 - "Difference between incoming air and room air.

Illustrative Problem: An office area measuring 42 x 72 feet with a 9 foot high ceiling with the total air supply being 3600 CFM.

    72' -----~.I

    1

Assume that you divide the space into six zones of equal area 24 ft. x 21ft. Since the spaces are almost square, you would select 4-way throw square diffuser. The flow rate for each diffuser is calculated by dividing the total CFM by the number of divided spaces:

    3600 = 600CFM/diffuser{150CFM each way) 6

Check that flow, mounting height and temperature are within the values shown in Table 3. In the selection table for type CD9 -4SD diffusers, find one that has a 12 to 15 foot throw at 600 CFM. Select a 15 inch x 15 inch diffuser which satisfies the requirements

    Q = 625 CFM Throw = 12 to 17 ft. NC = 21
