What is your geographic question?

An international company wants to purchase housing for ten key employees around George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The housing needs to be at least five miles from any arriving or departing corridors and must be accessible to major roads and freeways. Where would this housing be located?

What question or observations originally gave you the idea for your project?

What originally gave me the idea was that my sons grandparents had to relocate to Houston from Massachusetts and Compaq had to find them housing. I took it a bit further to add some complexity to my spatial question.

What did you expect to find?

I expected to find that the neighborhoods would be a bit closer to the airport, but no knowing the flight corridor it was just a guess.

How did you gather your data?

The information came from Google Earth Pro, fly2houston, hcad.

When did you gather your data?

I started gathering my data over a month ago.

Did you face any difficulties gathering your data?

Gathering the data was not difficult but putting it all together took a little effort. I can tell you that I know 3 times as much about digitizing, geo-referencing, calculate geometry and GCS and Projected Coordinate Systems

How did you choose the limits of your dataset?

The limits of my dataset were dictated by the limits of the buffers and land parcels.

What did you find (also…did you find what you expected to find, did any unusual patterns emerge, etc.)?

What I found is that the flight corridors over Houston are pretty big. A five mile buffer around them both created a very large polygon the excluded a lot of the neighborhoods.

State your conclusions.

In conclusion there are few neighborhoods that meet that criteria without moving into the city. Staying in the “suburbs” and fitting the spatial question limited the number of neighborhoods to look in. Without doing more research and gathering more data there was no way to determine if the company could indeed find housing if the occupants were unwilling to sell the houses. I was assuming all parcels were occupied and not for sale or vacated.
