Principal’s Report

Celebrating Literacy and Numeracy Week Yesterday, 30th August, we were very excited to have Brian Nankervis, aka Raymond J Bartholomeuz, visit our school to perform some poetry reading for our Grade 1 – 6 students.

It was a wonderful performance and, along with using “The Party Hats” as part of the show, Brian commented that over all the years of visiting primary schools he had never seen anything as great as our band.

Well done Party Hats, and thank you Brian for such a lovely compliment. Mr Jacobs and Laura should be very proud and congratulated on their outstanding achievement with the students.

GHPS Auskickers hit the big time

Last Sunday four of our GHPS students played in an Auskick grid game at Etihad Stadium. Will Short (3S), Michael Davey (2M), Evan Shields (2T) and Alex Verginis (2T) played at half time during the St. Kilda vs Brisbane Lions game on one of the AFL’s premier grounds.

Along with twenty of their Ormond Football Club Auskick friends they rucked, kicked, hand passed, marked and most exciting, all kicked goals during their once in a lifetime experience.

While truly soaking up the atmosphere all of our lads showed great passion and sportsmanship. Well done boys!!

2016 Paralympics in Rio Russell Short, father of Jim, 4/5A and William, 3S, has been selected to represent Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. It will be his eighth Games and he will be competing in shot put.

Russell is an Australian legally blind athlete, who has competed at seven Paralympics and won six gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

Here is Jim’s report: My Dad, Russell Short, is going to his 8th Paralympics in Rio. He was the flag bearer at the Beijing Paralympics and he has been to Athens, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, London and Seoul.

In shot put, he held the world record which was 15.50 metres. He will be throwing shot put in Rio at 11.30pm on 8th September and you can watch him on Channel 7 or on the Paralympics App. Jim Short 4/5A

We wish Russell well at the Games, and congratulate him on these fantastic achievements.

Awarded Leave to attend Next week Ms Kamila Krauze will be attending the SMiSposium 2016 in Sydney from Monday 5th September and returning on Thursday 8th September. We look forward to hearing about Ms Krauze’s experience when she returns.

School Uniform A reminder to please ensure your child is dressed in the GHPS correct uniform every day. The school really does pride itself on all students wearing the uniform correctly, and does not want this spoil by some students continuing to wear non-school colours. This includes differently coloured tights or stockings. Please wear maroon or navy ONLY. Please contact the office if you need any further assistance.

Father’s Day Sunday 4th September Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in the GHPS Community. I hope you have a very nice day and your children give you some extra special attention. Maybe you will even get a special gift from the wonderful Father’s Day Stall!

Stimulated Learning – Literacy and Numeracy As you would be aware from the Home Reading competition notice that came home on Monday and from other communications, this week is:

To provide further impetus and traction to this special week of extra stimulated learning, yesterday the Years 1 to 6 students had the pleasure of participating in a Poetry performance and workshop, presented by Raymond J. Bartholomeuz (Brian Nankervis from the SBS show RocKwiz).

Brian also talked about how and why he has been inspired to write and perform poetry. Today the students will be participating in a school wide Bingo participation, where:

Each class can choose 25 numbers from 1 to 50

Numbers will be read out each day over the PA system whilst the students are eating their lunch

The first grade to cross out all of their 25 numbers and call the office is the winning class

In addition to the above, there are other possible learning activities, which classes can implement to promote student interest and engagement in Literacy and Numeracy activities: Links to Literacy and Numeracy week ideas /activities: Literacy:https://www.literacyandnumeracy.gov.au/literacy-activities Six Word Stories, Read Alouds, Catch-a-Reader, Read for Australia – Friday 2 September 2016, Poem in your Pocket Poetry Workshop – Primary with Lorraine Marwood .
