Dates to Remember Dear parents The Synergy Dance festival will occur on Thursday June 7 and Thursday June 14. GPS students will be performing two items entitled ‘What About Us’ and ‘Let It Grow’. Miss Donovan and Miss Summerell have been the coordinators for these dances and the students are really looking forward to performing. Additionally, we will have two public speakers announcing items. Congratulations to all of the children representing our school – we wish you all great success! Where’s My Child’s Teacher? Ive added this brief explanation to try to outline to all parents why sometimes, their children have different teachers. At the beginning of every year, every class is assigned a teacher. Some of the reasons your child MIGHT have a different teacher at various times include: Release from face-to-face teaching (RFF). Every primary teacher in NSW is allocated 2hrs of RFF each week. During this time, another teacher will teach the class – they deliver the learning activities prepared by the class teacher. The class teacher is absent (maybe sick, bereaved, carer leave) or assigned elsewhere for the day (eg attending a course). In these situations we have a casual teacher in to teach the class. The class teacher is undertaking observations in other classes - once again, a teacher will continue the delivery of the learning activities set for the class by their teacher. Leadership team members are absent. Teachers, with specific leadership responsibilities, such as supervising other teachers have to do these things during teaching times. Once again, the teacher taking the class delivers the class teacher’s program of activities. Beginning Teachers. All beginning teachers, according to DoE professional learning guidelines are entitled to periods of additional ‘RFF’ to research and reflect upon their teaching. Sometimes supervisors will sit with them at these times. In this case, we cover both classes. Library sessions- Mrs Bourke takes classes for most of these sessions. Dates to Remember

Dear parents

The Synergy Dance festival will occur on Thursday June 7 and Thursday June 14.

Some of the reasons your child MIGHT have a different teacher at various times include:

• Release from face-to-face teaching (RFF). Every primary teacher in NSW is allocated 2hrs of RFF each week. During this time, another teacher will teach the class – they deliver the learning activities prepared by the class teacher.

• The class teacher is absent (maybe sick, bereaved, carer leave) or assigned elsewhere for the day (eg attending a course). In these situations we have a casual teacher in to teach the class.

• The class teacher is undertaking observations in other classes - once again, a teacher will continue the delivery of the learning activities set for the class by their teacher.

• Leadership team members are absent. Teachers, with specific leadership responsibilities, such as supervising other teachers have to do these things during teaching times. Once again, the teacher taking the class delivers the class teacher’s program of activities.

• Beginning Teachers. All beginning teachers, according to DoE professional learning guidelines are entitled to periods of additional ‘RFF’ to research and reflect upon their teaching. Sometimes supervisors will sit with them at these times. In this case, we cover both classes.

• Library sessions- Mrs Bourke takes classes for most of these sessions.

As parents, I realise that some mums and dads might see these changes as ‘negative’ for students. As a school student in the 1950s (Yes, that long ago!) I only ever had one teacher each year. Teaching has changed dramatically over the years and as a result students have ‘lots’ of teachers. This is not a negative thing as it encourages and gives students the

‘best’ of many teachers whilst giving them the opportunity to work with and develop relationships with teachers with different styles, likes and strengths. This is also a way of assisting them to getting used to working with different people – an important skill they will need in later life at high school and in workplaces. It is important that students see their teachers and fellow students as part of their ‘school family’. Doing so helps them to know how to support others

and how to seek support when needed. The many relationships they build with an array of teachers give them access to teachers when they need assistance.

The Australian Early Development Census is now being completed by our kindergarten teachers. Essentially it involves the teachers assessing all students in their classes and then placing the information about things such as whether students have good pencil grip or can perform other basic tasks into a massive data bank. The data bank collects information on children Australia wide. It is used to guide directions in curriculum and support services for school. The teachers will need to work on this for about four days.

Have a good week,

Doug Meaney

Principal

Term 2 Week 2 Whole School Bounce Back Program Focus for the next few weeks of the term: People Bouncing Back If you are resilient you will be able to cope reasonably well with difficult situations and things that go wrong and then ‘bounce back’. Throughout life, children will need skills and attitudes to help them to bounce back. They will encounter everyday challenges, such as making mistakes, falling out with a friend, moving house or school or losing in a sports competition. Many will also face challenges, such as adapting to family break ups, a step-family, the illness or death of a family member, or being bullied. ‘People Bouncing Back’ is the Curriculum Unit that teaches children the 10 Bounce Back! statements.

These are the 10 Bounce Back statements that students will be learning about during weeks 1-5 of this term.

Bad times don’t last. Things always get better. Stay optimistic.

Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check.

Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset. Think again.

Nobody is perfect – not you and not others.

Concentrate on the positives (no matter how small) and use laughter.

Everybody experiences sadness, hurt, failure, rejection and setbacks sometimes, not just you. They are a normal part of life. Try not to personalise them.

Blame fairly. How much of what happened was due to you, to others and to bad luck or circumstances?

Accept what can’t be changed (but try to change what you can first)

Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture.

Keep things in perspective. It’s only part of your life.

For younger children, the simpler coping statements in BOUNCE are taught, but ‘bouncing back’ from a setback, a mistake or bad times is still referred to.

What can you do to help develop resilience in your child?

Use the appropriate ‘Bounce Back’ statement with your child whenever you see the opportunity.
