Glendenning Public School
Safe, Respectful Learners
Term 3, Week 2 Thursday, July 24, 2014
Dear parents,
Walk‐a‐thon Prize Assembly – this special assembly will be held on Friday 9am in our normal assembly area in the
courtyard. All parents are very welcome to attend – the list of prize winners will be advertised in next week’s
newsletter.
Parent Participation and Communication with Parents are two things we value at GPS. Parents are always invited to
all school events and teachers are very flexible and accommodating in assisting to meet with parents at times
convenient to both parties. At times, when parents have had to pick students up during the day, they have visited
classrooms to collect bags and engaged the teacher/s in conversation about various matters. Please understand that
this is not the time to do this – teachers have charge of their class and should not be distracted from this role.
Parents can always make an appointment through the front office and I ask that all parents follow this simple
procedure.
Unwelcome Visitors‐Over the last few weekends we have had some visitors in the school. The visitors have lit some
small fires and have illegally entered a room. They are probably teenagers. Police were called to the site last
weekend and chased two youths from the grounds. If you see any suspicious‐looking activity on our school site,
please phone School Security on 1300880021 or Mt Druitt Police on 96750699
Swimming Scheme – I regret to report that as a result of only a few students choosing to enrol, we have had to
cancel the swimming scheme for this year. We have to take this step as we need to give our bus company adequate
notice or we will have to pay for the buses. This is very disappointing for those students who would like to attend
and hopefully, we will be able to get enough students to run the scheme in 2015.
PBL Developments Included in this newsletter is a PBL Matrix which clearly sets out the behaviours expected of
students in various areas of the school. We ask you to have a look at the matrix and if you can see any expectations
that might need to be modified, to either email Miss Howard at the school email address or phone and discuss your
ideas OR you can complete the feedback sheet included with this newsletter.
A great deal of time and effort has been put into an enhancement to our school rewards system. Some time back the
students participated in a competition to design a logo for our PBL practices. The winning design was of a ‘Griffin’.
The design has been further developed (see the attached sheet) and a system involving the awarding of badges and
the eventual membership of a ‘Griffin Guild” for Years 5 & 6 students developed. The intention is that students who
meet their PBL goals and satisfy the additional behavioural criteria will receive a ‘Griffin Award’ at the end of each
year. This new badge system will replace the one we had last year. We also welcome your feedback on this initiative
and you can do this on the feedback sheet in the newsletter.
Have a great week,
Doug Meaney

GLENDENNING GRIFFIN UNVEILING AND OUR NEW PBL REWARDS PROPOSAL
We are very excited to share our new PBL Recognition Rewards proposal. Our rewards are based on our newly
appointed Glendenning Griffin mascot. We are currently surveying students on our proposal, and look forward to
feedback from our parents/carers.
In traditional folklore, a Griffin is an amalgamation of a lion and an eagle. It has the rear body of a lion, the head and
forelegs of an eagle and is usually represented with wings. These features combined, denote characteristics that we
feel are in line with our core PBL values. In the past, Griffins have been used to represent strength, courage and
leadership, all of which link nicely with our ‘Respectful’ value. The intelligence of both animals represents our
‘Learner’ value and the visual capability of both these animals (ie, eagle eye view) can be linked to our ‘Safe’ value,
as in seeing and being aware of our surroundings. Griffins are also known for guarding treasure and priceless
students – which of course are all of our students and GPS community!
We would like to once again, thank and congratulate Ethan and Saad, from 5/6M, for their thoughtful mascot entry!
We have high expectations of our students, and there are some students who consistently demonstrate their
ability to be Safe, Respectful Learners. The Griffin Rewards are designed to acknowledge and congratulate these
students, and therefore, we acknowledge that not all students will receive these rewards. The Griffin Rewards are
something to be valued, and every year, each student will be given the opportunity and support to work towards
achieving their PBL goals.
We also acknowledge that ‘misbehaviour’, is an opportunity for re‐teaching of expectations. Therefore our
behaviour incident criteria (below), allows some leniency in incidents (from up to 4 time‐outs in K + 1, and up to 2 in
Years 4, 5 and 6). We wish for students to learn from their mistakes and choose a more appropriate behaviour in the
future.
Students are eligible to receive the Griffin rewards, if they achieve all of their PBL goals, and, meet the behavioural
criteria. Information regarding revised PBL goal sheets were included in our Term 2, Week 5 newsletter (please visit
our school website http://www.glendennin‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ and find the newsletter dated 29/5/14).

4, 5 and 6 0 – 2 0 – 2 0
You can also find copies of the PBL Goal Sheets on the website, under the notes home tab, titled ‘PBL newsletter’. All
students have completed these sheets with their teacher, for the 1st semester.
Griffin Rewards Proposal Reward
Year (reward given at end of year)
If students achieve all of their PBL goals for Semester Two, and meet the relevant behaviour incidents criteria – they are rewarded with a badge, which corresponds to their current year level. E.g. A Year 1 student meets the PBL criteria, but did not receive a badge for their previous year (Kindergarten). The student will still receive a bronze badge, regardless of any badge they have received prior. The rewards are given at the end of Semester Two, in readiness to wear (and be acknowledged for their exemplary behaviour) during the following year. Students have the choice of wearing their badges on their school shirt, hat, bag, or keeping it at home. If a student loses a badge, they will have the option of purchasing a replacement from the PBL team. Students are ultimately responsible for looking after their own property whilst at school, and this includes their PBL badges.

Year 3
Students at the end of Year 4, have the opportunity to enter the ‘Griffin Guild’, for their senior years (Years 5 and 6). The reward is a ‘Griffin Guild’ iron‐on patch, which is to be placed onto the front of a school shirt. If a student receives a patch at the end of Year 4, they are eligible to receive a platinum badge, if they meet the PBL criteria at the end of Year 5. If a student did not receive a patch at the end of Year 4, they are eligible to receive a patch at the end of Year 5, but, are unable to receive the platinum badge.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Feedback Sheet
We have shared with you two exciting elements of PBL, which we welcome your feedback on. Please comment
below on any suggestions or comments you would like to make. Please return this feedback sheet to Miss Howard by
the end of Week 3 (Friday, 1st August). We thank you for your ongoing support of PBL.
PBL Matrix A PBL Matrix clearly outlines the expected behaviours we have of our students, in all school settings. This is one
universal document, that teachers will use to teach their students, that parents will use to discuss their child’s
expected behaviours, and also a tool for visiting teachers to quickly ascertain GPS’s behavioural expectations, across
our school values (Safe, Respectful and Learner).
What do you like about it? What could be better?
Griffin Rewards The Griffin Rewards are designed to acknowledge those students that consistently demonstrate the Safe, Respectful
and Learner values. These rewards, are in addition to the other awards of Caught you Being tokens, Merit Awards,
Work of the Week Awards, Citizenship Awards, Student of the Week awards, Sportsmanship Awards, Principals
Awards and other in‐class rewards. The Griffin Rewards are therefore only available for those students that meet our
exemplary PBL criteria.
What do you like about it? What could be better?
Term 2 PBL Reward Day
On Thursday of Week 9, Term 2, 4 students from each class that received the most Caught you Being tokens were treated to a special move in the hall “The Little Rascals”. As expected, the students behaved exceptionally and demonstrated the school vales of being Safe, Respectful Learners. Well done to the below students!

Area specific rules and behaviour expectations – Term 3
During this term, classes will be focusing on the following areas of the school, and the behaviours that students are
expected to demonstrate. These lessons are an opportunity to revise or re‐teach appropriate behaviour. To support
PBL, please ask your child to explain the different rules for the different areas, or question what they can, and can’t
do in the different areas.
