Both drivers showed respectful and responsible behaviour and shared details and the damage to the cars can now be fixed. Most importantly, no child or parent suffered injury (other than the ‘fear’ of a crash). Remedy – Our school has a 40km/ zone around it. This means 40km/h is a maximum. Drivers should be aware that when cars are parking, and people are crossing the street, it is probably wise to drive at a slower pace. Street signs that are in place are the signs we must all follow – even if we disagree with them they ‘signpost’ the law to us all. Dates to Remember

Dear parents,

WE ARE A PBL SCHOOL which MEANS THAT ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHOULD ACT IN SAFE RESPECTFUL WAYS AT ALL TIMES

Road Rage, Car Hit Outside our School and Pedestrian and Bike Safety On Wednesday of this week we had two incidents at our school that could potentially have led to injury of students and/or parents. Please understand that as teachers, we have no jurisdiction over the road and how drivers use it – that is a community and police matter. As Principal I have on many occasions warned drivers that leaving cars running (sometimes with young children), standing cars illegally, or parking cars illegally may attract a large fine. I do this as a service and in the expectation and hope that all parents do the right thing so that all children are safe.

Incident 1- The first that was reported to the school involved a driver of a car becoming upset or angry at a driver who left their car and went to the kerb side to open the doors for her children. The driver of the car behind allegedly became abusive and after speaking to the first mother drove off.

Remedy – The use of the often called ‘kiss and drop’ area is clearly defined in RMS literature and the guidelines are included again in this newsletter. The rules are clear – drivers should follow them. Any parent/driver who sees or experiences any road rage incidents should try to remember the rego of the car/s involved and report the matter to the police. Obviously any images would assist in the report. Most importantly, no parent should model abusive language, anger, racism or any other anti-social behaviour to any child – not even their own!

Incident 2- The second incident involved a car ‘side swiping’ another during the morning peak period outside the school.

Drivers parking close to the crossing endanger students and other pedestrians by obscuring views and often, blocking the road. Please follow the advice on road signs.

Pedestrian and Bike Safety - even innocent students can be harmed whilst they are doing the right thing – as shown by the death of the young child outside a Sydney school recently. Parents - just as teachers do - have a responsibility to teach children to use pedestrian crossings correctly – that means walking within the ‘zebra stripes’. Parents – please be responsible and set a good example for your children. Similarly, whilst we teach bike safety at school, riding a bike to school is a privilege – students who are seen to be acting in ways that are dangerous will lose the right to bring their bikes onto school grounds. Also, we had a concerned community member phone the school because she had seen two younger students (6-9yr olds) crossing Linde Rd at a dangerous point in the road – if you have two younger students who cross Linde Rd on their own each morning, please make sure they understand where and how to cross!

Monday Morning Assembly – is a fitting time for parents to join us. Lately, however, we seem to have a number of parents who wish to talk during the assembly. This is unacceptable. Monday morning is when we meet as a K-6 student group with all teachers. We want and appreciate when parents join us, but we need parents to display the value of being respectful by being quiet when students are quiet, standing for the national anthem, listening when announcements are made, removing noisy pre-schoolers until they are quiet and ensuring phones are switched to silent and not answered until you are away from the assembly area. Parents should also ensure pre-schoolers are either sitting with them or on the ground – they are not to be running around. Assemblies are for the students so we seek to ensure they are as good as they can be – the assistance of all parents in this would be a big help to everyone.

Would you Believe? After the sad news above, it would be good to end on a little lighter note. I offer two interesting insights from some of the students.

With respect to Apple Watches – This week a student asked a teacher, ‘Does Mr Meaney buy all of the teachers Apple watches?’ The teacher replied ‘Well, no, why do you ask?’ The student replied, ‘Well lots of teachers have them so I thought he bought them so you’d know the time.’

With respect to Excursions and electricity – On Monday morning a Yr6 student asked, ‘Mr Meaney, why do we have excursions?’ I explained that we have them for lots of reasons including getting students to places where they can experience different activities (like they do when on camp) or to see special things (such as going to the Powerhouse Museum, to Canberra and Parliament and so on). The student said, ‘Oh.’ I asked – ‘Why did you ask?’ The student replied, ‘I was talking to some Yr 3 kids and they said you had them so that you can pay the electricity bills.’

Let’s Celebrate!

The above graphs show the Average Scaled Growth and At or Above Expected Growth for Glendenning PS compared to other schools – for Yr 5 students. The first graph shows the various subjects and it is very rewarding to see that Glendenning PS has surpassed both schools in our area and schools across the state. The second graph is also a great result showing that GPS has more students achieving at or above the expected growth they were to show – that is, they have exceeded expectations of them in the subject areas shown. Well done to all students and teachers – these are great results and show why in recent years, Glendenning PS has been a desired school for many non-local students.

Purple Day for Epilepsy Action Australia

This year Glendenning will be supporting Epilepsy Action Australia by hosting a Purple Day. Epilepsy is a medical condition that affects the brain. Approximately affecting 1-2% of the population has epilepsy.

Purple Day is a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness. Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone. She named the day Purple Day after the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy, lavender.

On Friday 27th September we will be having our own Purple Day. All students, teachers and parents are encouraged to dress in their best purple clothes for a gold coin donation. There will be an award for the best dressed of each class.

We can’t wait to see your amazing purple outfits and thank you for supporting this wonderful charity event.
