third year, Leeuwarden“Kamernet! That’s a good room rental site. It publishes the students’ opinions instead of the house owners’ views, which are often more positive about the room than the actual reality. Also make sure to get to know some of your house mates in advance, because moving around is a drag and there’s always a possibility of ending up with annoying house mates.”
second year, Groningen“I had a total of twelve ‘house-mate selection’ meetings before I finally found a room. Unfortunately that house burnt down even before I could move in. I finally found a room in Kraneweg through Lefier, a housing corporation. I pay e 310 a month for a 14m2 room. It’s highly advisable to register with Kamernet or a housing corporation, such as Lefier, as soon as you know where you are going to study. The more points you accumulate, the easier it is to find a room.”
third year student Horse Business Management Emmen“Friends of mine gave me a tip about a student room in Zuidbarge. I live six kilometres from the university in a room of 16m² for € 275.00 per month. My tip for new students is to use social media such as Facebook. There are special group pages for people who are seeking or offering accommodation. Newly vacant rooms are also regularly advertised at the university, so keep your eyes open!”

The nicest students live in Groningen. But that’s also where they drink the most beer in sheer litres, because many of the students come from far away and don’t go home on weekends. The official language in Qatar is Arabic and many people also speak English as a second language. Top drie uitgeoefende bijbaantjes van hbo-studenten: 1. Winkelbediende, 2. Bediende in de horeca, 3. Achter de bar bij een kroeg/club. (cbs, 2010).The top three student jobs among Higher Professional Education students are: 1. Shop assistant, 2. Hospitality worker, 3. Barman/maid in a pub or club. Stenden South Africa currently has 157 South African students and 88 Grand Tour students. Bali has a population of about 3,5 million, of which the majority, about 95%, are Balinese Hindus. The Thai name of Bangkok is Krung Thep and it was ranked world’s best city, in 2008.Hbo-studenten verdienen gemiddeld meer dan wo-studenten. (cbs, 2010)Higher Professional Education students earn more on average than university students. This is due to the fact that more of them have extra incomes, work more hours per week and work more weeks of the year. Some 83 percent of all university students had student jobs in 2008, while 92% of all Higher Professional Education students had student jobs in the same year. (CBS, 2010)Twitterende studenten halen betere cijfers. (aldus het onderzoek van Dr. Reynol Junco van de Lock Haven University) Students that tweet get better grades (according to research done by Dr Reynol Junco of Lock Haven University).Stenden Qatar heeft studenten en medewerkers van 65 verschillende nationaliteiten.Stenden Qatar has students and staff of 65 different nationalities. Research conducted around the world revealed that students already display withdrawal symptoms after only 24 hours without access to the Internet and other types of media. The research was done by the University of Maryland’s International Center for Media & the Public Agenda. Nearly one in three new Higher Professional Education students have a Senior Secondary Vocational diploma. Students with integrity get better grades than less kind-hearted ones. It appears that the student’s character is more important in terms of his academic success than his intelligence.

14:00 Lunchtijd - Niet slapen ;-)Dit moment doet me denken aan Qatar Stenden.

08:00 Breakfast in ifood & Drinks Leaving my house in Leeuwarden on my bike (in Qatar, almost every student has a car, but in the Netherlands we ride a bike) heading to Stenden University, first thing I do I pick up my fresh orange juice and chicken wrap from Ifood & Drink in Stenden. Then I go toward my first class of this morning.
11:00 Break (Socializing) It is normally a break between classes and it is about 30 minutes, this is the time were I have the chance to socialize with other students. Since Stenden is multicultural university it provides me with a great opportunity to interact and make new friends or even discuss school topics my classmates.
14:00 Lunch time - Not sleeping ;-)This time reminds me of Qatar Stenden, since it was always warm weather that makes me when I finish school I go to sleep for some times but gladly I am here in Leeuwarden were at that time I go to the city center with my friends to have lunch in Croissanterie Victorio and hanging around enjoying the weather.
16:00 HomeworkIt is time for doing some school work and some preparation for tomorrow’s lecture and group meeting.
20:00 Overseas conversation I always wait for this time to start having interesting conversation with my parents telling them about my day and my plans and how is it in Leeuwarden. An important difference between my life in Qatar and in the Netherlands is that in Qatar my parents are always there to support me,but here in the Netherlands I am independent.
23:00 Going outTime to have a some fun and enjoy the top hits of music in one of the clubs in the city and off course with a Dutch flavor.

The new Stenden Emmen Library and Knowledge Centre was officially opened on 4 January 2011. This ‘nerve centre’ of the university of applied sciences offers a wide range of modern study facilities. “I think the Library and Knowledge Centre adds real value to the university of applied sciences. I’ve practically been sitting there with my laptop every day since it opened,” says Commercial Economics student Marlies Tigelaar. “It has really opened up the university of applied sciences, and has made it possible to get in touch with a lot more fellow students. It makes studying much more fun and exciting.”

Multifaceted “Assen is obviously well-known for the TT Festival, but that’s not all,” says third-year Education in Primary Schools student Denise Rijling. “You can go shopping for all sorts of nice things in the shopping centre. And obviously you could also enjoy a nice dinner in one of the many little restaurants here. If you enjoy films or the theatre for your recreation, you could go to the renovated De Nieuwe Kolk theatre. On summer’s days, you could enjoy the sunshine and a snack and drink on the terraces of Plein10 or Hotel de Jonge. For a night on the town, you could go to any of the following pubs: Zusjes de Boer, ’T Café, De Beefeater, as well as many others. And if you’ve got your dancing shoes on, Discotheque Diana is the place to be.”

Study Problems?
Have you missed a lot of lectures and are fallingbehind? Do you have problems at home, or physical or psychological problems? While these issues are certainly a nuisance, you would undoubtedly still like to finish your studies. So you might actually wish to talk to someone about it. The student counsellor is always standing by to listen to you.
“Helping students with studyproblems and also helping out with personal problems,” that’s what the counselling office does, says Annette Rauh. Annette is a specialist in intercultural problems andknows exactly what it’s liketo study in a foreign country.
Help and Advice“Students often find it hard
to consult us for help and advice, but they usually dis-cover that it’s a relief when they eventually get round to visiting us,” says student counsellor Ben Bloemink. “They don’t really expect itto be so easy to discuss their problems with us. In addition, we are often able to help them get on with their lives.”
Regulationsyou can consult the counsel-ling office with all sorts ofquestions about study problems, including financial issues. “For example, we also advise the students on study grant extensions, the long-term student regulations and other financial schemes,” student counsellor Aafke Mensinga explains.
Training CoursesAmong other services, the counselling office offers
training courses and work-shops that help students resolve their study problems. Most of the training courses and workshops are given inthe Dutch language; for example, the training courses on Uitstelgedrag, Effectief studeren en Rouwverwerking (Procrastination, Effective Studying and Dealing with Loss). The Study Skills & Time Management trainingcourse is designed for inter-national students. The training courses / workshops are not offered at all the locations. Find out more about this.

“Participation is addictive”The CPC or Central Participation Council has the right to consent and advisory rights when it comes to all the important decisions that are taken by the Executive Board. The council also has the right of initiative, which entitles it to raise almost any issue that is related to the University of Applied Sciences or any given programme. The CPC has seats for twenty-four members that work or study at Stenden University and it meets at least four times a year. The CPC is an excellent platform for students to have their say about anything that is going on at Stenden! In the past, for example, a lot of complaints were raised about the shortage of sitting spaces in the Stenden Library and Knowledge Centre. Those issues were addressed in a CPC meeting, as a result of which more sitting spaces were subsequently created. Two of the subjects that the CPC is currently working hard on are the budget and the Stenden 2012-2016 Strategy Plan. For more detailed information on the CPC, please visit iStenden.com.
Student Council Every programme has its own student council that represents the students’ interests. If you have a problem in or with your programme, do not hesitate to contact the Programme Secretary to find out more about your programme’s Student Council and what it can do for you.
Student Representative Council Stenden South AfricaStenden South Africa’s Student Representative Council (SRC) is elected by the students, and those students serve on the committee for one academic year.when students have issues on campus, they talk to the SRC, and we talk to management about it, so the problem can be solved. 0.00 Hours: ’t Heertje Monday night is the regular pub evening at Io Vivat’s asso-ciation house, ’t Heertje. I love starting my week with a nice cold ‘Brand’ beer in the hand! 3.00 Hours: Going home I try to get home before the alarm goes off, so I can still put in a bit of shuteye. Fortunately I live only about 200 metres from the pub; so I’m home in no time! Although, I’m not sure that it’s really such a great benefit …?7.00 Hours: Snooze The alarm! Ah… 7 o’ clock. Snooze! I roll over for another few minutes’ slumber. 9.00 Hours: Off to school It’s a comfortable bike ride to school for my Marketing class. I’m doing a management minor at the moment, which means that I don’t have all that many classes. which is rather convenient given the fact that there’s a major big party happening tonight. And I’m the organiser.10.30 Hours: Getting ready to party! Fortunately I’m already free by 10.30 hours, so I rush off to Club NOA to prepare for the party, which we’re throwing to celebrate the 25 anniversary of both Io Vivat and the IHM programme. we have to turn the whole club silver: the walls, the stages, everything. And all the technical stuff must work and the lighting must be set up too. So plenty of things to do today! 15.00 Hours: Answering emails I quickly pop into the association’s boardroom to answer some emails. My next appointment’s scheduled for half past three in the Stenden Hotel’s foyer: To discuss current affairs in the IHM programme. After the meeting, I rush back to Club NOA to get on with things there. Stress? No ways! My motto is to stay chilled, because everything’s going to be all right on the night. 18.00 Hours: Meeting Our student association has a regular meeting every Tuesday evening. So there’s not much time for “me” on the schedule today. while we’re in the meeting, the courier from Sparerib Express shows up with our dinner, which includes corncobs: to help us keep the vitamin levels more or less up to scratch. 21.00 Hours: Change of clothing, rehearsals, and throw open the doors! I finally have a few moments of quality time with myself at nine o’ clock: time for a change of clothing and to get ready to party. The dress rehearsal for the opening starts at ten o’ clock and at eleven o’ clock sharp we throw open the doors. Let the party begin! Everything goes down great: The film, the lights, and the dancers all go exactly as planned, and double-jubilee revelry keeps going until the wee hours of the morn.

In the first place, my life is in a
bit of a state of organised chaos!
But allow me to introduce myself:
I’m Jan-Jaap Altenburg, 19, and a
third-year student in International
Hospitality Management. I’m also a
member of the student association,
Io Vivat Nostrorum Sanitas, in which
I’m serving as Vice President this
year. The ‘job’ entails dealing with
all the clothing for the practicals
in my programme, as well as a lot
of involvement in Sales and
Marketing: stuff like looking for
sponsors for events and so on.
Io Vivat is connected to Stenden;
which means that we work with
Stenden in a lot of different
areas. But enough of that:
Let’s talk about my daily life!

Onderwijs (PGO). Samen met je klas
bespreek je een probleem uit de
praktijk en los je het probleem en
eventuele onduidelijkheden op. Er
zijn verschillende rollen die je kunt
vervullen, zoals voorzitter, notulist of
bordschrijver.
gevonden is.
sessies. Aan het eind heb je samen al
studerend, pratend en overleggend
kennis ontwikkeld die je kunt
gebruiken in de toekomst. En als je
goed oplet tijdens PGO, heb je de
kennis voor je tentamen ook al
grotendeels in je zak zitten!
wil je meer weten over PGO?

you no longer have to keep quiet in class; in fact, you must talk to your fellow students. That’s the idea behind Problem Based Learning (PBL). The idea is for you and your fellow students to discuss problems from the practice and to resolve the problem and anything that is still unclear to you. you will be required to play several different roles in the process: chairperson, minutes secretary and board writer. PBL is an active and interactive approach that will help prepare you for the future.
your timetable will display two PBL sessions per week. After each PBL session, you will work individually to solve the problems you discovered during the classes. This is done with the use of literature, the Internet and the lectures. Then, in the next session, you and your fellow students will jointly analyse the information you have all collected. you will explain specific issues to the other students and ask questions about issues that are still unclear to you. In short, you will learn a lot during these sessions. By the end of each session, you will all have developed a great deal of
knowledge - that you will be able to use in the future - while studying, talking and consulting one another. And if you pay attention during the PBL sessions, you will discover that you already have most of the knowledge you need for the examinations in your head!
If you would like to find out more about PBL, simply scan the QR code here with your smart phone!
welcome to Stenden. you have been able to read all about Stenden in this magazine, about student life and the facilities that Stenden and its surroundings provide to make your study and study time as pleasant as possible. your choices and how you spend your study time are important in preparing for your future. However, during your study there are plenty of opportunities for adventure, sports activities and socializing. you are at the beginning of your journey into the world of Stenden and at the beginning of your future. we want to offer you an open world full of dynamics, challenges, quality of education, knowledge and development. It is not without reason that we have chosen to incorporate a swallow into our logo. The swallow symbolizes flying the nest and freedom. Stenden would like to encourage everyone to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible to help them on their journey into the future. So go for it. we wish you every success! Jump into the world of Stenden, into your future, and fly!
