GolfNews Magazine: The ratio of

men to women utilizing plastic surgery,

what is it approximately?

Dr. Mark Sofonio: The ratio across

the United States is about seventy percent

female, maybe a little higher, and twenty

to thirty percent male. We see a higher per-

centage of males here in the valley because

we have a high percentage of people who

seek alternate lifestyles. So, my practice is

about sixty percent female and forty per-

cent male.

GNM: Are men, in general, utilizing

plastic surgery more than in the past?

Dr. Sofonio: There has been a para-

digm shift in the way people perceive plas-

tic surgery. As plastic surgeries have

become more mainstream, men have be-

come much more interested in having plas-

tic surgery. Number one procedure

requested by men are eyes. Second, lipo-

suction. Third, hair restoration. Men want

to look better and want to change some-

thing that has a profound effect that could

be permanent.

GNM: A “typical patient” seeking

plastic surgery to improve their appear-

ance, what is that profile?

Dr. Sofonio: The profile varies de-

pending where you practice. Here in the

desert, fifty-five is the average age of the

person who lives in the Coachella Valley.

The person I see on average is in the fifty-

plus category who is interested in revers-

ing the signs of aging. The patients I see

want to look like they did; they want to

look normal. They don’t want to have mas-

sive changes that standout.

This is very different than Los Ange-

les. When I went to UCLA and finished my

training in plastic surgery in the mid-90s, I

went to work as a plastic surgeon for a year

and there was a different onus.

Is There Such Thing As Universal Beauty?
