A Fasig-Tipton sale in Kentucky is an unusual sight in Septem-ber, and the only thing more unique than its presence the last time it happened was its premise.

In 2017, the Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase took place the day before the marathon Keeneland September Year-ling Sale, putting a group of selected yearlings on offer with pedigrees or physicals that suggested they’d be well-suited to run on the grass. While auc-tions specializing in horses of different ages and birthplaces are commonplace on the sale calendar, putting together a catalog with an eye toward their preferred surface was a step into uncharted territory.

The fact that there hasn’t been a Turf Showcase since then is a telling indicator of how the auction was received in the short term. The high-end commercial stigma around being labeled a turf horse is making granular progress, but it’s still nearly as hard for a turf-leaning horse to crack the upper echelon of a sale today as it was in 2017. However, each sale’s reputation as a place to find winners and pinhook prospects takes years to develop, keeping the jury out until further notice.

The graduates of the Turf Showcase are 4-year-olds of 2020, and the late-blooming nature of many top turf run-ners indicates there is still time for the story to be written on this group of offerings. Just like any cross-section of prospects, be they auction horses or athletes entering a professional draft, there are a wide range of outcomes, from heroes and underachievers, to hopefuls who end up making a splash in an entirely different field.

The star alum of the Turf Showcase by just about any metric out there was Legends of War, a Scat Daddy colt out of the unplaced Rahy mare Madera Dancer who sold to Hunter Valley Farm for $200,000.

Legends of War was shipped to Europe to enter the 2018 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale for the Mayfield Stables of Ronaldo de Souza and Tanya Browne, and he brought the event’s highest price, going to bloodstock agent Stephen Hillen for 900,000 guineas (about $1.35 million).

The colt remained in Europe to begin his on-track career for owner Qatar Racing, winning on debut and eventually becom-ing a Group 2-placed runner in England. Legends of War was moved back to the U.S. for the start of his 3-year-old cam-paign, where Qatar Racing took on partners including C T R Stables and put the colt in the barn of trainer Doug O’Neill.

Turf sprinting proved to be the specialty for Legends of War, who earned his signature victory in last year’s G3 Franklin-Simp-

    Stallion Spotlight

    MOHAYMENGr. or ro. H., 2013, Tapit –

Justwhistledixie, by Dixue UnionRace Record: 13-5-0-0’ $998,417

    Advertised Fee: $7,500

What is Mohaymen’s strongest selling point as a stallion?

Kent Barnes: He won his first five starts at two and three, which included four Grade 2 races, and he is out of a top producing mare.

If I’ve got a mare that needs help from the stallion on a physical characteristic, what can Mohay-men best contribute to the equation?

Barnes: Outstanding conformation. He would be difficult to find any faults on as you would expect from a horse that brought $2.2 million as a yearling.

What parts of Tapit come through in Mohaymen’s physi-cal? How does Mohaymen’s female family influence how he’s put together?

Barnes: It’s easy enough to pick him out as a son of Tapit, but the Dixie Union mare Justwhistledixie adds a lot of refinement and class to all her foals.

Mohaymen’s first foals are yearlings of 2020. As they continue to develop, what are some common traits you’ve seen among them?

Barnes: I tried to see all his foals in Kentucky last year and it

was a great first crop. The breeders were very pleased with the confor-mation, size and balance of his foals. They all seem to have a great mind to them and a nice stride.

Mohaymen won his first five career starts, including three as a juvenile, two of which were Grade 2 races. In your experience, how much can a stallion’s own fast start help dictate how his first runners will perform once they first reach the track?

Barnes: There is always high expec-tation for early runners by horses that won graded stakes themselves

at two. I think if the stallion showed ability at two combined with a family that already produces 2-year-old winners, there is a very good chance his first crop will perform early.

What would you say was Mohaymen’s most impressive victory, and why?

Barnes: The Holy Bull Stakes was his most visually impres-sive win, as he pulled away from the field easily, but to me, the Remsen impressed me the most when he split horses to move from third to first in just a few strides. It showed courage and determination for a 2-year-old to make that kind of move.

What’s something about Mohaymen that you think goes overlooked?

Barnes: Just his stud fee. He has the race record, the pedi-gree, and the looks that everyone can see. PRS

modalities are common practice in human medicine as the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends radiographs every couple of years, and with increased access to quality digital radiography this is also becoming more common in horses.

Horse teeth do develop cavities and these can lead to fracture, pain, and sometimes sinus infections. These problems can be avoided with early detection and treat-ment. The treatment for these is cavity fillings (restora-tions) and can be done as a routine standing procedure. Our goal is to preserve functional occlusion of the teeth and allow continued grazing.

Dr. Brad Tanner received his DVM from Auburn Univer-sity in 2005 and completed an internship at Rood and Riddle thereafter. He is a shareholder in the clinic, where he focuses on advanced dentistry, primary care and reproduction. Tanner became board certified in equine dentistry in 2019.

Veterinarians at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital answer your questions about sales and healthcare of Thor-oughbred auction yearlings, weanlings, 2-year-olds and breeding stock.

Email us at [email protected] if you have a question for a veterinarian.

QUESTION: Why is it important to have a veterinarian perform dental work on your horse?

DR. BRAD TANNER: Responsible horse owners have mental checklists of the things that need to be done each year for their horses. These include deworming, vaccina-tions, Coggins test, health certificate and annual teeth floating. The annual float is a treatment for the condition of sharp enamel points. No treatment, be it antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, etc. should be administered without an examination and proper diagnosis. Why should a den-tal float be any different?

The tooth of a horse continues to grow (erupt) through-out life. Those areas of the tooth that do not get worn away become long and sharp. Left to their own devices these sharp teeth may cause cuts in the cheeks and tongue. These sharp teeth cause increased discomfort in performance horses as bit and bridle change head car-riage, which forces increased contact of these teeth with the cheek tissue. Dental floating is the necessary treat-ment for this common condition in the horse.

While responsible owners are correct to have their horse’s teeth checked annually, the floating is not the most important thing happening – the exam is. A proper dental exam performed by your veterinarian can provide insight into your horse’s general health as well their oral health. This veterinarian has spent years of training in anatomy, physiology, medicine, surgery, imaging etc. and is equipped to recognize, diagnose and treat oral pain. The dental examination will include assessing facial sym-metry, bone enlargements, lymph nodes, draining tracts, maleruptions, malocclusions, soft tissue lacerations and abrasions. The exam will also include a close inspection of each tooth surface with a dental mirror or an oral camera. These close looks often show painful problemat-ic teeth with cracks, fractures or feed packing that may need to be investigated with additional imaging.

Recognition of abnormal dental wear or other pathology may be indication for dental radiographs or a CT scan to further investigate problematic teeth. These imaging

son Stakes at Kentucky Downs and parlayed that into a start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. He last raced on the Saudi Cup undercard, and will enter stallion duty in England next year.

Legends of War is the leading earner from the Turf Show-case graduates, having made $491,240 on the racetrack. His Franklin-Simpson Stakes triumph also makes him the only graduate to date with a graded or group stakes win.

Legends of War has a lot of stamps in his passport, showing just how wide a net one relatively small sale can cast around the globe. The 145 graduates of the Turf Showcase have com-peted in the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Japan, the U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, Panama, Denmark, and Greece.

While many of the Turf Showcase graduates went on to race overseas, one of the most unique career trajectories came from Revamp, a Tapizar colt who sold to CDM Racing and Dominic Finn for $55,000.

He brought 60,000 guineas (about $90,000) the following year at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, and did little to inspire in three British starts before selling again for 5,000 British pounds (about $6,333) 2019 Tattersalls Ascot June Sale. Such a firesale transaction may not project to big things for a horse still early in his 3-year-old season, but he found his level at Markopoulo Racetrack in Greece, where the gelding drew off to win the Greek Derby by 11 ½ lengths over dirt.

The female graduates of the Turf Showcase have also begun to branch out into their next careers as broodmares, many of them entering the breeding shed for the first time in 2020.

Mirroring their own newcomer status to the breeding program, the Turf Showcase fillies have typically gone on to support the books of young stallions, including 2020 rookies Vino Rosso, Omaha Beach, and two to Audible. Others have been booked to newer stallions including Runhappy, Oscar Performance, Karakontie, Optimizer, War Correspondent, and Slumber.

The highest-profile stallion bookings among the Turf Showcase alumni so far have gone to Splashy Kisses and Peace Parade.

Splashy Kisses, a daughter of Blame, visited More Than Ready in 2019, and she was booked to Uncle Mo earlier this year. After selling for $30,000 at the Turf Showcase and being pinhooked for $100,000, Splashy Kisses went on to finish second in the G2 Pocahontas Stakes on the Churchill Downs dirt and third in the G3 Sweet Life Stakes over the downhill turf course at Santa Anita. She later sold for $240,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Rac-ing Age Sale before starting her breeding career.

Peace Parade drew the highest hammer price of the Turf Showcase, but she finished under her reserve with a final bid of $375,000. The War Front filly never entered a race, and she was bred to Candy Ride this year for her first mating.
