There is much to be said about being active in the U.S. market, especially now: American consumers are more health conscious. • K3 packaging is setting new benchmarks in the industry. The successful K3 cardboard-plas-tics packaging developed by Greiner Packaging, is opening up new possibilities for decoration and communication. The abi-lity to print on both the inside and outside of the cardboard wrap offers a variety of unpre-cedented marketing opportunities for custo-

mers, while high-quality printing methods allow for sophisticated decoration variants. Using offset printing, UV varnishing, embos-sing, and aluminum lamination along with gold and silver print, practically anything is possible. From concept to completed K3 packaging, Greiner Packaging provides its customers expertly crafted solutions.

  • K3K3 is the original. The combi nation of letters and figures stands for cardboard-plastics-packaging. Those who want to find out more about K3 will discover that its technologi-cal roots are in Switzerland, and specifically, in Diepoldsau, where it was invented and patented over two decades ago.

Creative headsPeter Akermann and Walter Schellenberg - the fathers of K3- have been the driving force behind the ongoing development of K3 at the Swiss location of Greiner Pa-ckaging. K3 containers and tubs have been tried-and-tested throughout Europe in the most commonly used diame-ters, shapes (round, not round), and multi-packs. Customers

  • highly appreciate the ability to print on both sides of the wraps, which are frequently used for marketing promo-tions. We are continuously developing the K3 techno-logy with strong commitment and passion. Therefore, cur-rently we are capable of offering our customers an unpar-alleled diversity of applications, said Jens Krause, Product Group Director K3.

Versatile, sustainable, environmentally friendlyK3 packaging holds an impressive advantage due to its high-quality look, easy handling, and diversity. The techno-logy is suited for a wide assortment of products from con-venience to organic and premium. K3 packaging stands

out with an excellent CO2 balance and lowers recycling costs for manufacturers and fillers. Moreover, it has gained a distinctive advantage through the low overall proportion of plastics it uses in packaging. In terms of recycling, K3 technology is setting standards as well: the two compo-nents can be easily separated from each other with a handy tear-off strip. The benefits of sustainability offered by K3 are highlighted by a large number of companies to em-phasize their product messages. A prime example of this is Yeo Valley, Great Britains most successful producer of organic dairy products. For many years, this company has underscored its philosophy with the use of K3 packaging.

Convenient cups for hot instant beveragesHot drinks need well-insulated packaging solutions that provide protection from heat. This requirement becomes particularly important in instant products such as coffee, tea, or soups. The British vendor Drinkmaster previously used injection-molded cups in this sector. Greiner Packaging Switzerland worked closely with them to develop a K3 cup packaging solution with many additional advantages.

  • K3 packaging solutions meet the highest demands in terms of convenience, communication and environmen-tal friendliness. Invented in Switzerland, the technology is continually being refined and is winning an increasing number of supporters. Greiner Packagings Northern-Ire-land UK location at Dungannon has implemented a large number of K3 packaging projects over the last few years. Two ongoing projects are currently demonstrating its tech-nological diversity.

Soy-based yogurt alternatives in K3 cupsGreiner Packaging and Alpro have been successfully collaborating since 2008. The roots of this collaboration lie in two core aspects of K3 packaging solutions: premium quality and sustainability. Both packaging characteristics are perfect for the product. Soy-based yogurt alternatives from Alpro are just the right response to current consumer needs, providing important choices for healthy eating, while promoting sustainable management of the environment.

In addition, preparation is made easy by indicating the appropriate filling volume on the inside of the wrap. Apart from its convenience-related properties, K3 packaging al-so makes for an impressive visual appearance, with high-quality printing that results in excellent brand presentation at the point of sale. The wrap, which is entirely made of recycled cardboard, can be easily separated from the con-tainer, facilitating recycling. Kelloggs promotes the use of recycled cardboard in its other packaging and this feature optimally conforms to Kelloggs packaging intent.

  • Greiner Packaging Limited (UK)

In 2006, the Dungannon location was integrated into the network of Greiner Packaging, and ever since it has been developing extraordinarily dynamic packaging solutions. It has established an excellent reputation due to its rapid, precise implementation of new packaging designs, short lead times, and use of modern technologies. In addition, Dungannon is regarded as the model facility of the division in terms of the environmentally-friendly use of resources (Zero Waste to Landfill standard, low CO2 emissions, sustainable energy concepts).

Kerrygold in not-round K3 solution Greiner Packaging creates not-round packaging for the popular Irish butter brand. The new packaging for Kerrygold extra, a mixed spreadable fat made from Irish butter and nutritious rapeseed oil, reflects Greiner Packagings multifaceted tech-nological performance. It was designed within a very short time and needed just six months from concept to first supply. The core of the packaging is a thin, ther-moformed PP tub holding 8.8 ounces. It is wrapped with a cardboard segment which is made of recycled paper, rendering the tub stable and protecting it from the dam aging effects of light.

K3 supports the environmentAs with Kelloggs, environmental friendliness is also a ma-jor issue for Tesco the largest supermarket chain in Great Britain. The ecological benefits of K3 technology were the decisive criteria for changing the packaging of their internal yogurt product line. Now that K3 containers have repla-ced printed plastic containers, the CO2 footprint has been reduced by more than 50 per cent and the proportion of plastics in the packaging has been reduced by up to 40 per cent. Another positive side effect of the new packaging is a more eye-catching and brand-distinguishing appearance on the shelves.

  • Greiner Packaging, the company with the prominent red The Pack logo, is committed to Blue Packaging in its own manifesto of sustainability. In an environment of ever-dwindling resources, climatic and demographic changes, Greiner Packaging stands for sustainable management. The manifesto of sustainability covers three tiers: responsible handling of raw materials and resources, manufacturing of sustainable products, and sustainable infrastructure investments.

Responsible handling of raw materials and resources D-PET and R-PET are two prime examples of the responsible handling of raw materials and resources by Greiner Packaging. D-PET stands for Direct PET and is synonymous with the revolutionary production method. It requires around 67% less electric power than the traditional method for production and its CO2 footprint is about 25% less. R-PET stands for Recycled PET and is processed by Greiner Packaging in many existing facilities at many of its production facilities. While doing so, internal waste material is optimally utilized through in-house recycling.

Sustainable productsNow more than ever, the market requires sustainable packaging solutions that optimize recycling options while minimizing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. These sustainability goals are integrated in the K3 technology. Utilizing fiber-based

    blueblueblueblue

raw material or recycled cardboard for the cardboard wrap, K3 packagings extremely low net weight increases energy efficiency. K3 cups can also be manufactured from PLA, a material based on renewable raw materials. This is an alternative with huge potential, primarily for products with a short lifespan.

Sustainable infrastructure investments Greiner Packaging pays particular attention to key investments in the areas of waste heat utilization, photovoltaics, and the optimization of cooling systems. Waste heat from production is re-used to heat buildings, saving energy while significantly reducing CO2 emissions. At Greiner Packaging in Switzerland, a 21,528 square-foot photovoltaic facility produces approximately 200,000 kWh of electric power in a year, with half being fed to the public grid. At the Northern Ireland site in Dungannon, Greiner Packaging goes even one step further by completely heating a neighboring school with its excess heat. This energy-saving project earned the enterprise a prize from the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The reuse of waste heat saves energy while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

In Austria, Greiner Packaging is a partner in klimaaktiv pakt2020. Through this initiative, the company voluntarily makes a binding commitment to achieve the Austrian climate objectives by the year 2020.

The German milk processor Ehrmann shares two essential criteria of success in common with Greiner Packaging: the established structure of a family enterprise and years of constructive collaboration. This proven partnership will now make its way to the American continent. The first joint project for the US market is a 4-pack cream yogurt carried by Target, the U.S. retailer. Ideal partner for small to medium-sized quantitiesFamilies whose members have different taste preferences are the first target group for the cream yogurts. These families will be targeted through 4-packs, each containing two flavors - an arrangement that requires flexibility in packaging decoration. Greiner Packaging has solved the challenge by using wraps and is the ideal partner in this sector

for small-to-medium-sized quantities in the prepackaged 4-pack format. This solution benefits the filler in two important ways: filling can be done at existing production facilities, and there is no need for a large investment in separate form-fill and sealing equipment during the startup phase.
