Grand Knight’s Message
Corporate Communion brings families together by celebrating our
Catholic faith through receiving the Eucharist. When we attend
Mass and receive Christ through Holy Communion as a group, it
also makes our council and members more visible to the parish
community. Corporate Communion shows our unity and fraternity
and is a good time to recruit new members and their families. Our
next Corporate Communion is scheduled for Sunday April 24, 2016
at the Holy Cross Retreat Center. This event was initiated by the
Knights of Columbus Las Cruces Council 1226 as a Spiritual
Gathering of Councils and their families.
Along with the celebration of the Mass and Corporate Communion,
there will be a presentation on the Holy Family and Our Families
presented by Fr. Tom Smith, OFM Conv. There will be a Lunch
served along with a Rosary Walk to close the event. Please see the
attached informational flyer for all the details and make every
effort to join us for the Holy Mass, Corporate Communion, Family
Teaching, Family Gathering, and Rosary all rolled into one. May
the dear Lord’s choicest blessings be upon us all.
Viva Cristo Rey!

“It is in accordance with their dignity that all men, because they are persons, that is, beings endowed with reason and free will
and therefore personal responsibility, are both impelled by their nature and bound by a moral obligation to seek the truth,
especially religious truth. They are also bound to adhere to the truth once they come to know it and direct their whole lives in accordance with the demands of truth. But men cannot satisfy this obligation in a way that is in keeping with their own nature
unless they enjoy both psychological freedom and immunity from external coercion. Therefore the right to religious freedom
has its foundation not in the subjective attitude of the individual but in his very nature.” - Dignitatis Humanae, Second Vatican II Declaration on Religious Liberty, 2
The Knights of Columbus promotes a robust vision of religious liberty that embraces religion’s proper role in both its private and
public dimensions. As both Catholics and Americans, we celebrate the essential relationship shared between religion and liberty, a
relationship which has uniquely defined our country’s identity and has fostered our country’s development.
Every major achievement that has taken place within the American enterprise—the American Revolution; the abolition of slavery; the
civil rights movement; reforms in education, labor and woman’s rights—has been at the urging of religious people seeking a more just
and humane society.
In this light, the Knights of Columbus recognizes religious liberty as an indispensable condition for authentic human development.
Consistent with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we believe that man, created in the image and likeness of God, possesses the
natural right to be recognized as a free and responsible being, especially in moral and religious matters. Our Order remains steadfast
in its conviction that religious liberty “is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person.” (Catechism, 1738).
We are therefore called to defend religious liberty against cultural trends that are increasingly hostile to Christianity, and impede men
and women from freely exercising their religion by living in accordance with it. As the Second Vatican Council noted, although we
must respect the just autonomy of the secular sphere, we must take into consideration the truth that there is no realm of worldly af-
fairs that can be separated from God.
St. John Paul II witnessed that when a society attempts to close the door to religion, it inevitably falls prey to a totalitarian reading of
the human person that recognizes only the state as the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong. It is our duty as men of both Catholic
faith and patriotism to resist militant secularism and to defend religious liberty at the international, national, state, and local levels.
Without this necessary check on the power of the state, no principled limit can be recognized to prevent the expansion of govern-
ment’s power at the expense of personal liberty.
From Knights of Columbus Supreme Council
My husband, GK Jimmy Beasley, Basilica de San Albino Council #15578 Mesilla, has been a Knight of Columbus for
four years. Over the years, he was asked by several good men in our Las Cruces community to join the Knights of
Columbus. Finally, he accepted a general invitation extended by Fr. Richard Catanach to all the men of his parish to
establish a new council with him. I knew next to nothing about the Knights of Columbus Order, but I saw that good
men were being drawn to serve the Church and community through it, and I felt good about my husband’s associa-
tion with this group of men who were part of it.
Camaraderie between the men was growing, and soon, the wives were also getting to know one another and making
friendships through the monthly family meal gatherings that included praying a Rosary together. In December 2015,
the Basilica de San Albino Council hosted the Mid-year Meeting in Las Cruces. Plans for this event began 12
months earlier, and a good K of C team from the Basilica started holding many meetings each month to plan the
meeting sessions, luncheons and banquet, which were to be part of the overall mid-year event.
As the mid-year meeting date got closer, in fact, just a mere few weeks away, one of the Knights on the planning
team be-came very ill. It became apparent that the meeting plans he was working on, which were significant, needed
to be divided amongst the other team members. What I saw take place from that point on is nothing short of amazing.
And it was consistent with the Knights of Columbus’ reputation and motto, “In service to one, in service to all.” The
team members took on the extra duties, wives pitched in, Knights and wives from other councils also pitched in to
help, and our Catholic youth came together to serve at the banquet from throughout our local Church community.
Everyone worked hard and felt good about participating to make a success of the entire event. All were happy to sup-
port fellow brother Knight who would have done the same had “the shoe been on the other foot.”
I learned many positive things from this experience that I will always remember. For one, there is a lot of truth to the
saying, “Many hands make light work.” We certainly saw this play out throughout the planning and execution of
this event. The biggest blessing I received in all this was the opportunity to support my husband and help him in
every way I could to get through this event, which was a huge undertaking for his council. It’s easy to think this is
just another men’s organization, and that wives and families have very little to do with it, but it’s not like that at all.
Because it is a family-oriented organization I encourage wives who are not yet involved, to join their husbands in
Knights of Columbus activities.
St. John Paul II once said, “As the family goes, so goes the
nation, and so goes the world in which we live.” We should all
take that to heart because, if we want strong families, we
need strong marriages with strong and faith-filled husbands. I
can’t think of a better organization than the Knights of
Columbus to help a man become the person God called him to
be.

DEVINE GLORY AND HUMAN DIGNITY
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through al the earth!
When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the
stars which you arranged, what are we that you should keep us in
mind, men and women that you care for us? Yet you have made us little less than gods; and crowned us with
glory and honour, gave us power over the works of your hands, put
all things under our feet.
How great is your name, O Lord our God through all the earth!
Amen.
Divine Mercy
Eternal God,
in whom mercy is endless
and the treasury of
compassion
inexhaustible,
look kindly upon us
and increase Your mercy
in us, that in difficult
moments
we might not despair
nor become despondent,
but with great confidence
submit ourselves to Your
holy will, which is Love
and Mercy itself.
Amen.

Brother Knights,
Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future
April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or
similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or
perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these
accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different
reason.
Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax
return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of
principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a prod-
uct that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot
outlive — guaranteed — sound to you?
Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined
savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee
you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That
guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost
money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember –
absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with
peace of mind.
I am happy to meet with you – at your convenience and in
your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a
Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our
top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term
care insurance plans.
