I am happy to know that the Association of Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs, Bangladesh (AGWEB) is going to recognize and reward the outstanding women entrepreneurs through “Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013” program. I thank all the members of AGWEB on the eve of this auspicious program.

This award giving program is an effective tool to encourage women from all walks of life to enter small and medium enterprises sector and flourish. I thank AGWEB for continuously playing a significant role in promoting women entrepreneurship through enhancing the capacity of women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh desperate initiatives and planning have been undertaken to achieve gender parity in every sector. We are on the verge of achieving parity in overall education sector. Girls’ enrolment in primary education is more than that of boys. Women’s engagement in active politics is now visible which comes as a hope for the future. There are different Government programs to attract more women in SME and business sectors and to enhance their capacity. In line with all the Government initiatives women entrepreneurs are also coming forward in business with extended enthusiasm.

To encourage the grassroots women AGWEB has taken different commendable initiatives like Female Farmer Award Program and creating database of the women entrepreneurs. Such database assists all concerned in maintaining contact with the entrepreneurs and in continuing targeted support to them. It is encouraging that many of the women entrepreneurs under AGWEB are already involved in export markets.

I wish “Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013” a grand success.

This bears the testimony of the great achievement of AGWEB in providing the best services to the grassroots women who are generally the women entrepreneurs of Bangladesh.

Indeed, AGWEB has rendered valuable non-profitable services towards empowering women in Bangladesh by providing technical knowledge support to the grassroots women. They also arranged meetings, workshops and training programs for building capacity of the women. I take this opportunity to convey my sincere gratitude to Ms. Mousumi Islam, President of AGWEB, for her dynamic leadership in organizing Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013. I believe that AGWEB will further gear-up its activities in future under her leadership.

Page 8: Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013 Women Empowerment · Durafshan Haque Chowdhury First Vice President, AGWEB Editors Assistant: Mahbub Ara Jolly ... Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury,

I am happy to learn that the Association of Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs, Bangladesh (AGWEB) is going to organize the Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013. I congratulate AGWEB for continuously playing a significant role in promoting women entrepreneurship through enhancing the capacity of women entrepreneurs and advocating for active participation of women in national economy by bringing issues to the attention of the government, the business community at large and the media.

In Bangladesh, around 2 million people are entering into the labor force every year while only 1 million get employed in domestic and overseas job markets. To spur the economic growth, entrepreneurship development needs to be promoted with special emphasis on self-employment generation, new enterprise creation, women entrepreneurship development and enhancing access to formal financial system by the cottage, micro and small enterprises.

Although half of the population of Bangladesh is women, the number of women entrepreneurs remains insignificant. Ensuring women participation in mainstream development and creating opportunities for women entrepreneurs are essential to attain sustainable economic growth. In this regard, Bangladesh Bank has taken a good number of initiatives to ensure further access to formal financial services for the women entrepreneurs with easy terms and conditions.

I wish the Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs Award-2013 a grand success and expect that the initiatives by AGWEB will help improve the business environment and accelerate growth of business activities where women are effectively involved.
