PARISH LIFE & PASTORAL OUTREACH Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC, Director

Mary Agnes Sain, Secretary 299-9111 [email protected]

Reflection: "Give us the grace - when the sacredness of life before birth is attacked, to stand up and proclaim that no one ever has the authority to destroy unborn life. Never tire of firmly speaking out in defense of life from its conception, and do

not be deterred from the commitment to defend the dignity of every human person with courageous determination. Christ is with you, do not be afraid." - Blessed John Paul II

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel, centered on

the Eucharist and led by the Holy Spirit. We are inspired by the example of Mary to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by ministering to all.

Annunciation Parish Website: www.annunciationparishabq.org

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY Every year, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates the first Sunday of October as Respect Life Sunday. This is another opportunity for us to proclaim the importance and dignity of every human life. We get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget the thousands of innocent lives lost every day to abortions alone, not to mention the victims of war, famine, euthanasia and the other terrors of our time. How is it that we can ignore the most defenseless in our society from the innocent child in the womb to the senior citizens abandoned by family and society as a whole? In addition, can we ignore those condemned to death for crimes they did not commit? We Christians have a responsibility to the Lord to

stand up for, in the words of St. Paul to the Philippians 4:8, “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure....” Whether in works of mercy, like 40 Days for Life, or voting for life issues or praying for human dignity, we can promote godliness and bring light in the midst of the world’s darkness.

THE NEW LITURGY One of the first changes you will notice in the new translation of the Mass to be enacted on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27th, is the response that you will give to the priest or deacon when he says, “The Lord be with you.” Your response will now be, “And with your spirit.” This is an ancient response that addresses the priest or deacon’s ordination in the Holy Spirit, acknowledging the Spirit’s role in guiding the divine liturgy of the Mass. The beauty in this response is that it reminds us that it is less about the person of the

priest or deacon and more about the office in which he serves the community by virtue of his ordination. The cleric then blesses the community in the name of the Church of Jesus Christ, for whom he was ordained.

GOOD STEWARDSHIP As you may have noted in the bulletin, our anticipated weekly goal of $30,106 is not being reached in this new fiscal year. Knowing the tight financial situation parishioners are in today, we did not increase our budget this year. Nonetheless, the needs remain great, whether operating the church and school buildings, producing the many programs from religious education to adult formation, and most importantly providing the sacramental ministry from the altar to the grave. As you will see in the Parish Annual Report being distributed in the coming weeks, we were blessed this past year by your generosity and shared that blessing not only here in the parish, but throughout the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and beyond. If every family were to raise their giving by $2 or more each week, we would be able to reach our goal and provide for the many needs which come to the church door. May the Lord bless you in your giving and know that as you step out in faith to prayerfully consider your contribution, God cannot be outdone in generosity!

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011: Today’s Gospel (Matthew 21:33-43) & Catholic Charities God is generous and trusts us. The owner went away and left the vineyard with tenants. The vineyard was well equipped and had everything the tenants needed. In the same way, God trusts us and gives us free will. Not once, but many times, the owner forgives his tenants and their debts. God is also patient and truly believes in justice. Justice prevails in the end; not with violence but with love. Catholic Charities Center for Educational Opportunity provides those who have not finished with high school an opportunity to study for their GED, those who do not know English classes to learn the language, computer literacy, and citizenship exam classes for free. God entrusted us with our minds and Catholic Charities is helping people expand their minds. For more information on the Center for Educational Opportunity please call (505) 247-0442.

Do You Ever Wish You Could “Get More” Out of Mass?

For many Catholics, the Mass might, in a certain sense, be almost too familiar. What do all the prayers and rituals of the Mass mean? One key for unlocking the mystery of the Mass is Scripture. Quotations and allusions to Scriptural passages are found throughout the entire liturgy. Join us in our next Adult Education Program as we take A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH THE MASS! Program begins Wednesday, October 19, 2011 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Community Center More details to come...

Entertainment Books have arrived. They are available in the Parish Office. The cost is $35/book.
