Week 2, Term 3, 2016

Dear Parents,

So often we mention the ‘exciting’ things that happen here at School, with little attention paid to the everyday things that happen inside the classroom walls. I thought we’d use this week’s editorial to report on what has, is, and will be happening in each class this term. Enjoy.

K/1

The K/1 classroom has been getting into Term 3 with a lot of painting, craft and dancing in order to celebrate NAIDOC week. The children have enjoyed the stories from the dreamtime and loved collaborating with the 1/2 class to investigate and then create their own storylines.

1/2

This term in 1/2 we will be exploring places within Australia and will also be learning about Australia’s location in the world. This will involve representing and describing the position of objects on maps and also investigating Australia’s location in the world by comparing world maps, globes and online maps. As the Olympic draws near, we will also get Olympic fever, whilst learning about Rio De Janeiro.

We will continue to experiment with clapping sticks (a traditional musical instrument used by Aboriginal people), learning particular rhythms and improvising, and will also have fun expressing themselves through a variety of styles of music.

3/4

Term Three has started off well in 3/4.We welcomed two new students, Jacob and Byron, who have settled in so quickly. We have started our Geography unit, and are learning about Australia at the moment as well as exploring maps. I think everyone’s favourite part so far has been looking for our houses on Google Earth. Daniel and Hamish have brought in the largest Atlases we have ever seen which we are all enjoying poring over. We will be doing a lot more in the unit this term including looking at our country in many different ways and then moving our explorations to our neighbouring countries. We will be spending a lot of time exploring the similarities and differences between places and are also creating our own islands, using the knowledge we gain about climate, natural and human features.

With the Summer Olympics beginning in only 11 days, and the Paralympics not long after, we will be engaging in activities to develop awareness and knowledge of the games, both past and present as well as exploring the host city, Rio.

5/6

This term, Years 5/6 will be once again tackling an ERP - Educational Research Project - for our integrated unit on Australian democracy. An ERP is a style of personalised learning that ensures curriculum obligations for content and skills are maintained and enhanced, through teaching strategies that effectively engage, empower and provide greater ownership and choice for students. The students will spend a few weeks in the immersion phase, where their interests are piqued as they build a base content knowledge of the topic. Following that, they will propose their own open-ended questions for investigations, which they are to research the answers to, before presenting their findings in our Class Learning Expo. We look forward to sharing this learning with you.

Have a great week,

Nigel Trethowan.

The Premier’s Sporting Challenge continues for another three weeks. Shortly, we will be consulting with the students to determine the priorities for spending the funds that they have been busy earning.

In the meantime, keep active! Years 3-6 should be aiming for up to 80 minutes of physical activity per day, and K-2 20 minutes.

Calling all green thumbs! We had a fantastic response to our call for reading helpers, however, we are still looking for someone to help run our Gardening Group!

We are looking for someone (or a small number of people) who would be willing to oversee the vegetable garden as well as other gardening projects around the school. We would need a weekly commitment of around 40 minutes between 11:10 and 11:50.

If you think that you may be able to help out, please get in touch! You can give your name to Liz in the office, or

BIRTHDAYS!

Olympics Fun Day!

On Friday 12th August from 10am—2pm, we will be holding an Olympics Fun Day at the Gundaroo Oval for all students in K-6. This will be a day of tabloid-type Olympic events for all to participate in!

We are also hoping to run a sausage sizzle, however will need some parent volunteers to help with the serving and cooking. If you are free on the day and would like to help out, please let Liz N or one of the teachers know.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Student Injury Insurance

We trust that everyone managed to stay safe and injury free over the

holidays. Don’t forget, in case of injury, the P&C has taken out Student

Injury Insurance, which covers every student enrolled in our school against

accident, injury or death 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Please look for the red envelope sent home with your child today. Each year the P&C asks each family to make a contribution towards P&C funds, which are then used to support a range of sporting, learning and playground resources for the school. Your continued support is appreciated.

A Crunch & Sip tip!

When packing grapes for Crunch & Sip it can be an idea to put them in a small container or

the lunchbox so they don’t get squashed. Grapes are a popular fruit with kids. There’s something about putting them whole in your

mouth and bursting them by biting!

Entertainment Books

Entertainment Books are still available! They

are packed with vouchers and represent great

value for money. Please consider purchasing

one. 20% ($12) of the cost of the book goes

directly to the P&C, and therefore the school!

Talking Tickets “To be able to enjoy things in the past is to live

twice.”

Student Portfolios

Don’t forget, these are due back to

class teachers as soon as possible.

They are needed to begin filling again

with all the wonderful work your child

will be doing!

HAIR!

A reminder that where possible, long hair

should be tied back in a pony tail or plait. Not

only does this prevent hair interfering with the

face and eyes during class time, it helps

prevent the spread of those awful nits!!

A day at the shops

Today in 3/4 we have been learning about money, specifically calculating change. We

learned how to do this by bridging to the nearest dollar, then counting on. After

practicing this skill in groups, we put it into practice by going shopping.

I started off with $50, then I got a pogo stick, then I had $3 left. I sold $20 worth

of chips in my shop so I got a movie ticket for $19.95. Then I had $3.05.

Olly

The activity was to sell and buy things from other people. We worked with a partner

and my partner was Noah. In our shop we had drum kits and bouncy castles.

Isobel

We were learning about money so we played shops. I sold meal deals and it was fun.

Tom

Today for Maths we did shops. And we had to figure out the change. George and I

started with $10. We bought a pogo stick and a movie ticket.

Byron

We learned how to count money and how to give change .We made little stores. I sold

walkie talkies and pencil cases with Laura.

Freya

Today we did shops in maths. I was selling trampolines, books and beanbags. It was

really fun.

Learning Habits in 1/2

You may have been hearing about the wonderful Learning Superheros in 1/2. These superheros are

teaching us how to become better learners. We have attached some information about these Superheros

which can help learners of all ages.

Mindfulness: Paying attention and being curious on purpose

Why Mindfulness?

It helps us to handle hard situations, have self-control, build relationships,

reduce stress, improve mental performance and overcome bad

habits.

1/2 (including Mrs Greenhalgh) are continuing to practise mindfulness.

We are learning to be ‘noticers’ within the world around us.

GOSH News It is great to see and hear that everyone had an excellent holiday; the children have been excited to talk about their time off. This term at GOSH we are trialing a few different things. Firstly we have a new program based upon the My Time Our Place Curriculum; we will be filling this in each week with our planned activities and children’s comments. The program will be displayed next to the sign in and out sheets. There is a space for parent’s feedback as well. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Secondly, we will be having a topic a term. This term’s topic, chosen and voted on by the children before the holidays, is science experiments. Our first experiment last week involved putting vinegar in a drink bottle and bi-carb in a balloon. When they mixed together it formed a gas blowing up the balloon. We will be doing two simple science experiments per week (various days) where we will also discuss safety e.g. always get your parents permission, never lean over an experiment no-matter what you believe will happen, always keep a safe distance etc. All experiments will be under both Carers supervision.
