Women’s Fellowship Sue Manzke, President

Wow!! January 2019 already!! And what a year 2018 was. Women’s Fellowship was busy all year!

We’d like to thank all of

those who donated to the Hat/Mitten/Scarf Tree!!! It was an amazing amount of warm cozy things for those in need. They were: 1 baby blanket, 1

baby outfit, 12 pair mittens, 4 hat/mitten sets, 1 hat/glove set, 3

cozy collars, 21 pair of gloves, 1 pair of slippers, 72 hats, 37 scarves, 4 hat/scarf sets and 5 polar fleece blankets!!! That totals 162 items!! Wonderful!! Thank you also to those who purchased Kringles this

year!! We really appreciate it!! The funds raised go to those in need. The Christmas Clearing

Council barrels were

heaping full long before the deadline. We more than likely could have filled 4-5. There are a lot of children who will be extremely happy for your donations. Thanks again!! Don’t forget the program we have called Angel’s

Express. We’re more than happy to bring a meal

or two to anyone who might be in need . . . whether they are ill, have a funeral in their family or know

of someone who just plain needs it!! Please see Pat Kruse for any information on this program or to advise her of someone who may need it.

Housekeeping: We have signs up to NOT dump

beverages in the garbage cans . . . instead to dump them in the sink & then throw the cups away. That is still what we’d like you to do . . . HOWEVER . . . please don’t leave a mess in the sink for someone else to clean up! Please rinse the liquid down and wipe the sink out with some paper towel. It becomes a really nasty and smelly mess that is hard to clean. Thanks so much for cleaning up after yourself!!!

We’ve become more & more involved with the community

& several groups are using our building & our kitchen . . . some of whom are paying to use the space. We’d like it to always be a clean & pleasant space to use. We have noticed that several folks have become

lax in how they put things away how they clean up the counters, sinks, refrigerator, freezer & ovens & stove. Please be a little more aware & respectful of others by doing your part & please leave the kitchen like you found it or better!! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thanks a bunch!!! Speaking of refrigerator . . .

our old refrigerator died and we now have a beautiful new one!!! It’s bigger and better!! Feel free to stroll through the kitchen and take a peek at it! Again . . . just like with the old one . . . please label your items with name and date. The Health Department DOES check on us!!

Just a reminder that ALL ladies of our church are more than welcome to come to our meetings. Join the fun!! There is no special initiation or hazing or anything. Come to our meeting and enjoy a great dessert also.

Those who have been coming regularly are encouraged to invite someone new to come along!! The more the merrier!! Our next meeting is Monday,

February 4th at 6:30pm! Come one come all . . . and bring a friend! See you then!!

Family Fun Time Events Greg and Mary Ann Proffitt

Book Club

Tuesday, January 8th 6:30pm at church Bring a friend! Even if you don’t finish the book, you are welcome to join us! We will be discussing “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate.

“Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shanty boat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge--until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents--but they quickly realize that the truth is much darker. At the mercy of the facility's cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together--in a world of danger and uncertainty. Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a

lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions--and compels her to take a journey through her family's long-hidden history, on a path that will

ultimately lead either to devastation . . . or redemption.

Based on one of America's most notorious real-life scandals--in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country--Wingate's riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.”

Come and enjoy an evening of discussion, dessert and a lot of fun! Everyone is welcome!

Crafter's Corner

Saturday, January 12th 9am to 8:30pm at church. Come craft the afternoon away! Bring your favorite crafts and join in an afternoon of fellowship and fun! We’ll be ordering out for lunch and dinner so please bring money with you! Also, please sign up to bring a snack, fruit or dessert if you would like. Invite a friend or two and come for lunch or stay for the whole day! Everyone is welcome!

Thank you, thank you!

. . . to everyone who donated supplies or helped at the Community Christmas!! We made:

Thirty-nine blankets, 24 dozen cookies,

over 50 Christmas cards & 84 jars of cookie mix!

Blankets were distributed at Hebron House & the Sienna House. Cookies were divided between Hebron house, Sienna House & the Waukesha Fire Department. Thank you to all for giving of your time to make someone else’s Christmas a little brighter!

A special thank you to the Suchecki’s for inviting us into their beautifully decorated home for a warm fire, hot cocoa, cookies & fellowship after a wonderful night of Christmas caroling at Linden Heights/ Linden Grove! Thanks to all who came & shared the music of the season with others. It truly was a joyous time!

Welcoming Ministry Ron Knutson

First and foremost, we on the Welcoming Ministry team would like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. It has been an exciting year for us and we are looking forward to carrying on our conversations throughout the coming year. We have just finished up our study for the repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery and will be sending in our response sheet to the conference so that the resolution to Repudiate the Doctrine can be voted on at the 2019 Wisconsin Conference annual meeting in April. This has been a study where we have been challenged to look at our traditional theological understandings and examine them from a different perspective. We have explored and engaged what it means for the UCC to deny the validity of the Doctrine of Discovery. We have been asked to rethink theology, bible study and faith symbols without colonial tones. We have looked at our relationships with each other where we live as well as globally. And finally, how we can be the Church Together - healing and reconciling one another. What we’ve gotten out of this study is a more in- depth awareness of the issues facing the Indigenous people. During our time together, we have been uncomfortable at times talking about the topic. We know that it is an uphill journey and will not be repaired overnight but as long as we continue talking about it change can happen. It is already happening, I have been writing about it in this space for several months now, our confirmation class has taken up the conversation on several occasions and we have a member in discernment who is using some of our discussions as part of their thesis paper. Just because our study has completed doesn’t mean that we are finished talking about the issues facing our Native American brothers and sisters. In fact, in the very near future several opportunities will be available to us to continue learning more about the difficulties that affect them on a daily basis. Our youth are looking into possibly doing a mission project in South Dakota.

There is a Native American church in Milwaukee that we will be reaching out to as well. We are also

still endeavoring to reach out to the Hocak UCC congregation in Black River Falls to see if they may be willing to come down and talk to the congregation about the issues. So, the journey will continue, and it is our prayer that you will join us. As we move into 2019, we are looking into doing more social justice studies. Feel free to contact me if there is something that you feel is an issue you’d like to see discussed. There are a

couple items that we have been looking at recently. One of them, actually, may be considered similar to our last discussion. That topic is a conversation on Race and in particular a conversation that focuses attention on White Privilege and its manifestations and impacts. It is a study that will challenge our basic assumptions about race that help white communities maintain a system of privilege that often goes unnoticed by those white advocates for justice. This study narrows the focus on Privilege as seen through the lens of Black/White divisions in America. This is similar to other material that we have used to delve into how privilege is filtered through the lenses of other disadvantaged communities: Native American populations, Immigrant and refugee populations, the LGBTQ community, female and womanist perspectives and those differently abled. Our other possible focus may be a book study using a recently released book entitled “True Inclusion - Creating Communities of Radical Embrace” written by Brandan Robertson which takes us back into the LGBTQ discussion and beyond. By creating a culture of genuine inclusion, we will be asked to follow a Jesus who gave up his godly power to stand in solidarity with the oppressed. True Inclusion provides us with resources necessary to build a community where all are welcome to explore the pathways to spiritual health, healing and wholeness. Please consider joining our team. Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone 262-424-0496.

Nominating Committee News

Elections are coming up on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019. These are the individuals running for Council:

Deacon Candidates – Vote for One

Dennis Hink - My wife

Debbie has been a member of this church for many years. All of my children have been confirmed here. At the baptism of my grandchild seven years ago, I officially joined E&R Church.

I’ve been married to Deb for 43 years; have three children and 8 grand-children. I was born and raised in Waukesha and lived here most of my life. In 2005, I retired from the Air Force Reserves after 35 years. My last position in federal civil service was financial comptroller for the 440 Air Wing.

Since joining the E & R Church, I have served as Financial Secretary, overseeing all financial dealings within the Church. I have participated with the budget committee, investment committee and stewardship committee.

In addition, I have enjoyed volunteering for special events at the church and will continue to do so. I’d be very pleased to serve as Deacon of E & R Church. Mark Maile – I was baptized in

this church in 1963 and confirmed in 1978. During my teen years, I played the guitar and sang in the “Psalms 100 Band” with Bill Breylinger. I also sang in the junior and youth choir.

The history of my family in this church goes back to the 1800’s. My great grand-parents were members during that time. My grandfather, Clarence Maile, my father, Edward Maile and my mother, Shirley Maile served on the church council and my mother served on other church committees. Other family members, Otto and Lenora Mueller and August Mueller, were also very active in the church.

I’m married to Anna and we have a teenage daughter, Mariann that was baptized and confirmed in this church. She is the 5th generation of the Mueller/Maile family in this church.

I am currently serving as Deacon, filling in as Aly’s replacement when she resigned. I would very much like to continue serving in this area.

Trustee Candidates – Vote for Two

Scott Donovan – I’m running

for trustee. I work for AECOM & have been a maintenance mechanic for 25 years. My wife Sheri and I were married at E&RUCC 30 years ago & have been members ever since. We have 2 adult children, Scotty and Sammi Jo. In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities.

George Golding – I attended

Sunday School and was confirmed at Evangelical & Reformed UCC. After attending Valparaiso University, I moved to Illinois to work at Underwriter’s Laboratories for the last 30 years. My wife Lynn and I have been married for 23 years. We have two sons, Josh

who lives and works in Illinois and Dan who is a Freshman at UW-Platteville.

Lynn, Dan and I moved back to Wisconsin in 2010 and became members (again) at E&R UCC. Dan was confirmed here in 2014 and is a third generation Golding in this church.

I am currently involved with the Personnel, Stewardship and Interiors committees. I’ve served on Council as Trustee for the past three years and I’d be honored to continue serving on Council as Trustee.

Jenn Wray – My husband

Chris and I have been members of E&R for 7 years now. We have two daughters, Allison (6 ½ years) and Madelyn (2 years). I work full-time at QPS Employment Group as an Assistant HR Manager. Since the first time Chris and I came to E&R seven years ago, I have felt welcomed in this community. Since becoming a member, I have served in childcare, chaired the search and call process for Pastor Gross and am a member of Women's Fellowship. I currently serve on the Personnel and Pastoral Relations Committees, as council secretary and head up the Spaghetti Dinner. As a current member of the trustees, I am excited for the opportunity to continue to serve our church in ensuring the building is maintained and on the council.

Elder Candidates – Vote for Two

Trish Bakalars - I was born,

raised, baptized and confirmed as a member of E & R Church. I was married within this congregation, along with the baptism and confirmation of my son John as a child of this church.

I work full time as a Project Coordinator with the sales department at an industrial door manufacturing company headquartered in Milwaukee. I am in the process of earning my Masters’ degree, in Business, with a focus on Project Management.

I’ve also been an active volunteer with HAWS (Humane Animal Welfare Society) Waukesha. I socialize with each area of animals, along with both training and mentoring new/existing volunteers. I have been Volunteer of the Month and recently received a Volunteer of the Year Award.

I’ve always been an active member of this church, including teaching Sunday school since 2004. I was active in helping teach confirmation classes from fall 2009 to 2015. In fall 2010, I joined the church’s Board of Education Committee. I have also been active in helping with the dinners, coffee hours and other functions.

This church and its members have been a large part of both mine and my son’s lives, for which I’m eternally thankful. During the past year, I have grown a closer bond with our church, for which I cannot express my gratitude. I’m currently completing my term as Elder and I’d be honored to be re-elected for another term as Elder.

Terry Sasse – I’m running

for the position of Elder. I have been a member of E & R Church for approximately 30 years. Rick and I were married in this church and became members shortly thereafter. We have 3 daughters, Kate, Kim and Kristin, who were baptized, attended Sunday School and confirmed in this church. Kristin and Joe were married in this church. I taught Sunday School at E & R Church for 17 years and served on the Board of Education for 10 years. I have a BS degree in Dental Hygiene and have practiced for 35 years, 31 of those years at my current dental office. I would like the opportunity to serve as an Elder at E & R Church. Thank you for your consideration.

Bonnie Stojadinovic –

/I’m running for Elder at Evangelical & Reformed UCC. I have been a member of this church since July 2000 when I moved here from Manitowoc where I was a member of First Reformed UCC since I was born. I choose E&R UCC as my church after careful consideration of the many churches here because from the moment I walked in I felt welcomed and like I had a church family. That feeling has only grown stronger over the years. When I first joined E&R UCC, I was heavily involved in the youth group as a leader. However, my career and personal life changed, and I had to take a less active role. Now, I am ready and able to again take a more active role in the church. I am currently on the substitute Sunday school teacher list. Children have always been my passion and I naturally gravitate to them. In my career I am a Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and have been for the entire 19 years I’ve lived in Waukesha. I enjoy the rewards and challenges of working with this vulnerable population & their families and the long-term friends I have made. Because family is very important to me, I didn’t have to think twice when I gave birth to my daughter Elizabeth as to where she would be baptized, or where my family would attend church. Elizabeth and I both love our church family and we have been blessed to have been supported by this church and its members during some very difficult journeys in our life. The lessons Elizabeth has learned in Sunday school have made me such a proud mom and to hear her ask if she can go to church/Sunday school or be active in the events of this church makes my heart want to burst with happiness.

I personally have been blessed by my membership in this church. There have been some very trying times in my life and to know that I can leave them at church and be inspired by the fellowship and lessons about God is empowering. To take those insights and the hugs and warm words I get at church, with me on my individual journey leaves me overwhelmed with gratitude for my church family and this church itself. I hope you will consider giving me the honor of giving back to you in the capacity of being a church elder.
