Over 300 volunteers stamped out hungerat the nalc food driveThe 26th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive will benefit food banks in Hawaii including Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai, Maui Food Bank, The Food Basket on Hawaii. The statewide coordinated effort was led by members of the NALC Committee of Hawaii: Daniel Hirai,Cynthia Ishizaki, Terry Kaolulo, Catherine Lederer, Clay Tamaki, Daniel Yang and Adele Yoshikawa - who worked with various unions and sponsors to ensure the success of this year's Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Various companies with large trucks transported food donations to the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse on May 12 - 14, where members of union groups and agencies worked diligently for over 6 hours to inspect, sort and box donated food.

During the two weeks following the event, Hawaii Foodbank trucks continued to collect food donations. More than 479,000 pounds were collected, including over 400,000 pounds on Oahu, over 34,000 pounds on Hawaii island and over 5,000 pounds on Maui.

Joel and Suzy are members of Fight Hunger Hui who have supported Hawaii Foodbank for more than two decades.

“We give to Hawaii Foodbank because this is where we can help people. We understand having to make the difficult decision between paying rent and putting food on the table…we’ve had to make those tough choices ourselves.” said Suzy, a Fight Hunger Hui donor since 1998.

Suzy explained that early on in their marriage, Joel decided to leave his job in electronics technology because he felt it wasn’t going anywhere. He couldn’t find another job in his field, so he accepted work as adishwasher in Waikiki. “We struggled,” Suzy said. “Things got really thin.” When Joel decided to move to the mainland to find more satisfy-ing work, Suzy refused to leave Hawaii and they separated. She took on a part-time job paying only $15 a week to help make ends meet.

Joel found a job in Silicon Valley, but missed Hawaii and his wife. He eventually returned and landed a job at Pearl Harbor Shipyard, where he’s worked until retirement. “We’re fortunate to be in a financialposition to give back,” Suzy said. “Hawaii Foodbank was there for us when we needed help, and we’re happy to support the foodbank and the great work they do to ensure that no one in Hawaii goes hungry.”

The Hawaii Foodbank ohana spent an early pau hana day on Friday, February 17 to drive out hunger for the 14th Annual Golf Classic at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course. The charity golftournament concluded with a lively awards ceremony at the Bird of Paradise Restaurant.

Mahalo to all of the Golf Classic sponsors, participants, donors and volunteers for another successful tournament. The 2018 event raised over $46,000, a 4% increase from the previous year. Proceeds from the fundraiser will provide 117,184 meals to the community.

Hawaii Foodbank extends its sincerest mahalo toeveryone who joined us for the 12th annual culinary fundraiser, Great Chefs® Fight Hunger! Guests enjoyed a spread of delicious entreés, beverages and desserts crafted by a culinary ensemble of Oahu’s top chefs,beverage purveyors and dessert experts.

Proceeds from the 2018 Great Chefs® Fight Hunger totalled over $136,000, which will help provide more than 340,000 meals to feed Hawaii’s hungry. Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai received flood relief responses of over $200,000 throughout the month of April. Contributions included a $10,000 donation from Nagoya Toyopet designated to East Oahu, in addition to ananonymous donation of $50,000 for Kauai, food and bottle water from Bamboo Grill & Sushi, Malama Kauai, Walmart, Costco Wholesale, Safeway, Hawaii Foodservice Alliance, Hawaii Volcanic Water and numerous other members of the community.

Spotted at Safeway at Hokulei: Joanne Manguchei, Lesah Merritt (manager, Safeway), Wade and Debra Takemoto who came together on Food Drive Day.

Ralph Suniga of The Coca-Cola Company dropped off twopallets of bottled water for the people affected by the flood.

St. Catherine’s gang with Mark Horst at Safeway at Kapaa collected food and funds on Annual Food Drive Day.

Richard Jose and the Kauai IBEW dropped off flood relief supplies. We are truly appreciative of your contributions to emergency response efforts for Kauai residents affected by the recent disasters.

The 2017 - 18 Kraft Check-Out Hunger campaign raised 369,000 meals. Shoppers and retailers donated $147,622.23 by adding on green tear sheets to their grocery bill. Funds will be used tosupport Hawaii Foodbank on Oahu and Kauai, Maui Food Bank and The Food Basket on Hawaii island. Since its inception,Check-Out Hunger has raised over $3 million, thanks to retailers and shoppers of the following stores: ChoiceMART, Don Quijote, KTA Superstores, Marukai, Safeway, Tamura’s Enterprises, Times Supermarkets and Tamura Super Market.

Hawaii Family Dental’s commitment to excellence goes beyond oral health. Mitchell Nakagawa, director of marketing & patient care, revealed a stark fact during his visit to the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse.

“Hawaii ranks highest in the nation for the amount of children under 10 who suffer from tooth decay. Our mission is toimprove the lives of people in the community. We recognize the responsibility to ensure the well-being of children who don’t have enough nutritious food to eat.” ― Mitchell Nakagawa

A donation of $5,000 from Hawaii Family Dental was presented to Desiree Faumui, food drive manager. This gift will provide 12,500 meals to children at risk of hunger.

On behalf of The Spam Jam Foundation, Barbara Campbell, vice president of Retail Development and Leasing of OutriggerEnterprises Group presented a check for $20,000 at the 16th Annual Waikiki SPAM Jam Festival. Special thanks to Alaska Airlines, Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, Honolulu Cookie Company Hormel, and Outrigger Resorts, along with participat-ing restaurants and vendors.

Hawaii Foodbank staff and friends attended the Hawaii Visitors Industry Charity Walk on May 19. Our group raised over $3,000 - equivalent to more than 7,500 meals.

CPM hosts 12 food distributions per month in variousneighborhoods on Oahu by collaborating with 10 churches, including LMAIC in Wahiawa.

LMAIC, a full-gospel, spirit-filled church hosted their very first Ohana drop-off on April 7th. Food couriers equipped with wagons also personally delivered food to recipients’ homes, especially for people with limited access to trans-portation.

The Hawaii Foodbank Ohana Produce Plus Program provides people in marginalized areas with baked goods, dairy products, eggs, cereal, snack foods and beverages.

For her 9th birthday, Ruby Perucci told her mom instead of presents, she wanted her family and friends to donate food to Hawaii Foodbank.On May 23rd, they dropped off her gifts of more than 210 pounds of food! Thank you Ruby and happy belated birthday.

One overcast Saturday morning in April, the bustling of music and over 100 volunteers from various churches could be heard as they united to host an Ohana Produce Plus Program food distribution at Life More Abundantly Island Church (LMAIC) in Wahiawa. Members of LMAIC and Community People Ministries (CPM)distributed “family boxes” to people in need. FoodPartner Agencies like CPM play a vital role in the final drop-off points within various sites in the community.

t has been said that life begins at the end of your

comfort zone. After 33 years at KHON2, it is safe to say that the newsroom on Piikoi Street was indeed my comfort zone. But somehow, I knew there was something else I needed to do. Who knew I would find what I was searching for at the

end of a bumpy road on Kilihau Street?

I was introduced to the Hawaii Foodbank in 1992.Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai on September 11th, destroying our family’s home in Nawiliwili. We were left with little. There was no electricity, no running water and no food. But that changed a few days later, when the Hawaii

Foodbank provided more than one million pounds of food to help residents of Kauai recover from the disaster. It is something that I have never forgotten.

My mom was a single parent who raised two children while working three jobs. We struggled at times but it was no big deal eating Vienna sausage out of a can. I know what it is like to be without and that motivates me. It is my turn to give back.

The Hawaii Foodbank is on solid ground today because of people like John White, Linda Chu Takayama and Dick Grimm—people who believed in serving with compassion and being advocates for Hawaii’s hungry. I promise to carry their torch with that same commitment and passion. It is a legacy that I am grateful for and humbled to be a part of.
