Kinane had ridden the “Rock” in all of his starts prior to the G1 Sagitta 2000 Guineas, but missed the winning mount in that Classic due to a suspension. He was back aboard the colt for his victory in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, and also took the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains with Landseer. Johnny Murtagh, who picked up the mount on the “Rock” at Newmarket, will pilot Landseer this time. Nick Cheyne, Ascot’s clerk of the course, yesterday gave the official going as good to soft on the straight course, good to soft, soft in places on the round course. He told PA Sport , “We’ve had two drying days...and I can see it drying still quite a bit more between now and Tuesday providing we miss the rain-- there’s a bit tomorrow evening I think. I’d say it will still be on the slow side, but it’s certainly not going to be far away.” William Hill installed Rock of Gibraltar as the 1-2 favourite, with Landseer at 9-2. Godolphin’s Imtiyaz (Woodman), the most notable withdrawal, will instead go for Sunday’s G1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp. As he did last time when beating Narrative’s stable companion Ekraar in the G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica in Rome May 12, Falbrav left it late, but proved too strong in the finish for Godolphin’s colt. During a light campaign last year, Falbrav was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Morshdi (GB) in the G1 Derby Italiano at Rome in May. In beating Ekraar by 1 1/4 lengths, he showed that the policy of waiting on a high-profile four-year-old campaign had paid off and he consolidated his position as Italy’s best older horse yesterday. Held up in fourth on the rail as Narra- tive dominated the early stages, Falbrav made stealthy progress past struggling rivals at the top of the straight. He gradually cut into the frontrunner’s advantage, getting on top with 125 yards remaining. “I never had any problems, as he travelled so well off the fast pace which suited him very well,” said Vargiu. “He showed today that he is high class.” Sunday, Milan, Italy GRAN PREMIO DI MILANO-G1, i340,006, 6-16, 3yo/up, c/f/m, 1 1/2mT, 2:24.90, gd. 1--FALBRAV (IRE), 132, c, 4, by Fairy King 1st Dam: Gift Of The Night (SP-Fr), by Slewpy 2nd Dam: Little Nana (Fr), by Lithiot 3rd Dam: Nenana Road (Fr), by Kirkland Lake (GB) O-Scuderia Rencati; B-Azienda Agricola Francesa; T-L D’Auria; J-D Vargiu; i172,868. KINANE RED HOT FOR LEADING RIDER Michael Kinane was heavily backed yesterday torecord the most wins at this week’s Royal Ascot meet-ing and win the London Clubs Trophy for leading rider.Having installed Kinane as the 8-11 favourite, WilliamHill laid the jockey to the exclusion of all others and heis now the 4-11 favourite. Kinane looks to have astrong hand in tomorrow’s card, as Aidan O’Brien yes-terday confirmed Spartacus (Ire) (Danehill {USA}) oncourse for the G3 Coventry S. over six furlongs. He willalso be aboard Century City (Ire) (Danzig {USA}) in theopening G2 Queen Anne S. That colt was heavilybacked from 8-1 into 6-1 with Ladbrokes yesterday.

SISTER TO URBAN SEA AT TATTS JULY SALE Marlene Kelly (USA) (Irish Castle {USA}), a half sisterto G1 Prix de l’Arc d eTriomphe winner Urban Sea(USA), herself the dam of dual Derby winner Galileo(Ire), is to be sold at the three-day Tattersalls July Salethat starts in Newmarket July 9. Marlene Kelly, con-signed from Stoughton Stud, is in foal to GI KentuckyDerby winner Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) and is already thedam of six winners. In total, the catalogue numbers arecord 533, over 120 more lots than at last year’s JulySale. It includes significant consignments from leadingowner/breeders Gainsborough Stud Management,Juddmonte Farms, Plantation Stud and Shadwell Es-tates. Commenting on the catalogue, Tattersalls Chair-man Edmond Mahony said yesterday, “Last year’srecord-breaking July Sale has undoubtedly contributedto the huge entry this year, and the numbers are verydefinitely matched by the quality. The likes of Istabraqand champion Scandinavian sprinter Waquaas havefirmly established the sale as a consistent source of topclass international performers both Flat and NationalHunt, and the fillies and mares also make the sale afavourite with breeders from throughout the world.”

HONG KONG SEES DROP IN HANDLE Hong Kong’s 2001-2002 racing season ended yester-day with news that betting turnover had dropped about4 percent from the season that closed a year ago. Atotal of HK$78.1 billion was wagered; daily attendanceaveraged 30,135, a decrease of 13 percent. One factorin the decline was the World Cup--five of the 78 HongKong meetings went head-to-head with World Cupgames, and those meets saw attendance fall 26 per-cent and handle drop by HK$600 million. LawrenceWong, the chief executive of the Hong Kong JockeyClub, also attributed the waning business to “the slug-gish performance of the economy and the effects ofillegal gambling, particularly the upsurge in sports gam-bling with illegal and offshore bookmakers.” Wongadded that, while the 4-percent drop was a cause forconcern, “it could have been worse if the performanceof other sectors of the economy is an indication.”

AUSSIE TRAINER TOPS HONG KONG STANDINGS Australian horseman John Size, enjoying a stellar firstseason in Hong Kong, was crowned champion trainerwith 58 wins during the 2001-2002 meet. “It has beenhard work, but I am absolutely delighted to be cham-pion,” Size said. “The reception I got today wasoverwhelming--you don’t expect something like that. The fans here get very involved in what we do and it isgreat to see how much they appreciate our efforts.” Forthe second straight year, the jockey championship wentto South African Douglas Whyte. Whyte had threewinners on yesterday’s closing-day card at Sha Tin toend the season with 77 victories. Two riders, WayLeung and Vincent Sit, shared the apprentice jockeytitle with 13 wins apiece. Hong Kong’s 2002-2003meet starts Sept. 1 at Sha Tin.
