Program Seeks To Honor Young Heroes

Every year, an awards program honors a class of young heroes—young people who are committed at an early age to making the world a

better place to live. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program honors middle and high school students across the U.S. for volunteering in communities at home and abroad. The good news is that the search is on for America’s top youth volunteers of 2013. You can be part of the selection process by encouraging eligible young people to apply.

The Process Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are granted to youth volunteers at the local, state and national level. From early September through November 6, students in grades 5−12 are invited to apply for the 2013 awards if they have volunteered in the past year. Applications are available at www.spirit.prudential.com. Local Honorees are selected by school principals, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H groups, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and affiliates of the HandsOn Network. In February, several students in each state and the District of Columbia are named runners-up, and one middle level and one high school student are named

State Honorees. Those 102 honorees receive $1,000 awards, silver medallions and all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C. in May for special recognition events. In Washington, a national selection committee selects 10 State Honorees as America’s top youth volunteers. National Honorees receive $5,000 awards, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for a charitable organization of their choice.

The 2012 National Honorees include an 8th-grader who raised money to build a home for orphans in Uganda, a 15-year-old girl who helped provide children living in poverty in India and the U.S. with resources ranging from computer labs to dental clinics, and a 7th-grader whose nonprofit organization has collected and distributed more than 175,000 toys over the past five years for child victims of house fires and other natural disasters. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program was created in 1995 by Prudential

Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The awards constitute America’s largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. For nine years, Aaron Lantz actively sought out all of the out-of-school robotics programs and curriculum offered by 4-H. Beginning as early

as kindergarten, Lantz has shown a love for science and has channeled that passion further into a focus specifically on engineering. After competing in several robotics competitions, Lantz now plans to make a more permanent commitment to his passion, by majoring in electrical engineering in college. The National Science Experiment that will be showcased at this year’s upcoming 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD), is Lantz’ favorite to date. The 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge, introduces young people all around the nation to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as issues surrounding the importance of protecting our environment. “4-H National Youth Science Day is a great opportunity for youth to get an introduction to STEM,” said Lantz. “You can pursue many different science opportunities through 4-H, and it’s a good way for youth to preview STEM subjects if they would like to get more involved in the field, in the future.” This October, the National Science Experiment will provide youth the opportunity to enhance their engineering skills by learning to think like a robotics engineer, assembling their own robots in order to manage an environmental cleanup.

Leading her second 4-H NYSD event for youth and adults, 17-year-old Rina Huang, president of Maryland 4-H Club, the Lucky Clovers, wishes she knew that 4-H offered science opportunities earlier. “If youth start STEM at a young age, I feel that it will help spark interest in science careers in the future,” said Huang. “It’s also great to see more girls, like me, getting into science programs like these.” As part of 4-H’s One Million New Scientists, One Million New Ideas campaign, 4-H has been addressing the nation’s critical challenge by

working to prepare a million new young people to excel in science, engineering, technology and applied math by the year 2013. “America faces a future of intense global competition with a startling shortage of scientists. However, with high-quality positive youth development programs like 4-H NYSD, youth are introduced to important concepts and solutions that will ensure their contributions to their communities today, and their success as global leaders tomorrow,” said Donald T. Floyd, Jr., National 4-H Council president and CEO.

Students Start Careers Many internships may be difficult to get but they’re an increasingly effective route to launching a successful career.

Here’s why: On average, 62 percent of college graduates who had paid internships were offered full-time jobs. Fully 74 percent of the students who received internships through one organization received job offers.

The nation’s largest nonprofit resource for salaried corporate internships, INROADS, helps prepare qualified college students for success by offering them comprehensive training in essential workplace skills that range from interview techniques to business ethics to utilizing technology.

So far, INROADS has placed students in over 125,000 paid internships and graduated over 25,000 into full-time professional and managerial positions, with over 1,000 corporate partners, many in the Fortune 500. In fact, INROADS graduates had a conversion rate of 65 percent from internship to full-time employment with an INROADS Corporate Partner, while the national average graduate conversion rate is only 57.7 percent.

“It’s just a lightning bolt.” “It’s just a busy intersection.” These aren’t phrases you would hear from parents. But

what about “It’s just the flu”? Every parent wants to protect his or her child from dangers like lightning or busy intersections, but other misunderstood risks, like the flu, can be just as serious and just as preventable. Between 2008 and 2010, for ex-ample, less than 20 children in the U.S. were killed by lightning. While these deaths are tragic, in that same time frame, flu claimed the lives of more than 500 U.S. children.

Facts on Flu Although the flu is often confused with the common cold, flu symp-toms tend to develop quickly (usu-ally one to four days after a person is exposed to the virus) and can be more severe than the normal cough and congestion of a cold. In fact, the flu can lead to serious and even fatal complications, particularly in children. Additionally, the types of viruses that cause the flu typically change from one season to the next and immunity from vaccination declines over time. That’s why a yearly flu vaccine is so important for everyone 6 months of age and older, as recommended

by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the single best way to help prevent getting the flu. “After a mild flu season last year, families may have a false sense of security that the flu isn’t so serious,” explains Laura Scott, executive di-rector of the national nonprofit Fam-ilies Fighting Flu. “But for the more than 30 families in the U.S. who lost a child to the flu this past flu season, it was devastating. One death is one too many when there is a vaccine to prevent the disease.” Members of Families Fighting Flu understand this reality all too well. Each has had a child suffer serious medical complications or die due to the flu. Some were high school ath-letes, hospitalized for weeks battling what started out as “just the flu.” Others were active school-age kids who died unexpectedly from the flu. Since 2004, the group has been working to educate others about the seriousness of the flu and the impor-tance of annual vaccination.

Doctor’s Advice According to Flor M. Munoz, M.D., M.S., medical adviser to Families Fighting Flu and assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, the flu is a leading cause of hospitalizations

Don’t Let Flu Sideline You: This Season, “Stay In The Game”for children in the U.S. “Getting vaccinated protects you and your child from the flu and from passing it on, but it may also have added benefits. In pregnant women, for example, recent studies suggest that flu protection may be passed from the mom to the unborn child when the mother is vaccinated during pregnancy.”

Where to Get Help Flu vaccines are available in many locations, including doctors’ offices, pharmacies, schools and workplaces. The website www.FamiliesFightingFlu.org provides resources about disease prevention, including a flu clinic locator to find the nearest place to get the vaccine and a toolkit to educate people about the importance of flu prevention. As

Stay in the Game! Here are simple steps to help your family stay healthy this flu season: • Get vaccinated. According to the CDC, annual vaccination is safe and effective and is the single best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. • Wash your hands. Frequent hand washing keeps germs out of our bodies. • Stay home if you don’t feel well. Don’t let germs spread. • Do the elbow cough. Cough into elbows, not hands, where it’s more likely to spread germs. • Visit FamiliesFightingFlu.org. The website provides many use-ful resources, including a flu clinic locator. --NAPSI

Scott reflects, “It breaks my heart every year to see news headlines about the loss of a child due to flu. These deaths can be prevented, and that’s why we’re working to raise awareness-an annual flu vaccination is the best defense against a disease that’s not ‘just the flu’ when it happens to you or to someone you love.”
