29th October 2015 Newsletter 20

Dear Parents,

Sun Smart

As the weather is warming up and Summer is quickly approaching, it is

timely to remember SunSmart practices when outside and when exposed

to the sun. Our school wide brim hats meet the Anti-Cancer standards to

best protect the students from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. It

is good practice for your children to wear their hats when walking to and

from school everyday. All students are required to wear a hat at recess,

lunchtime, when on an excursion or outside at Sport to be sun smart. New hats are available from the

school’s uniform shop for $10 if your child has lost theirs or the hat is in need of replacement.

Working Bee

Thank you to all families who attended our Working Bee last Friday 23rd October. The combined efforts of

all parents and children really contribute to maintaining and beautifying the school’s grounds and facilities.

As a team we were able to tackle the quiet area where our vegetable and sensory garden are planned to be

developed. The number of families who assisted was small, however, the combined effort was noticeable

around the school as the pathways, garden beds and lawn areas were cleaned up. Thank you again to the

following families for their attendance and hard work: Thuan, McLaren, Coe, Gifford, Taylor, Williams,

Addison, Quinn, Morton and Bennett.

Lap-a-thon– Cup Day Holiday

I remind all families of the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday next Tuesday 3rd November. If any families take

the opportunity to enjoy a long weekend, I hope it is a special break for

you all. Following Cup Day, we will be holding our Lap-a-thon, dress

up day on Thursday 5th November. Children will be starting the day

with a dress up parade from 9am. At 11.10am our Preps, Yr 1 and 2

grades will complete their lap-a-thon on the oval. Our Yrs 3, 4, 5, 6

grades will complete their laps from 12pm onwards. Parents are

welcome to attend for these fun activities.

Moving Schools

If you are moving out of the area to another school for next year, could

you please inform the office as soon as possible as grades placements

are commencing soon. Have a wonderful weekend.

A message from the Assistant Principal.

Thank you to our Grade fours this week for participating in the PROGRESS IN

INTERNATIONAL READING LITERACY STUDY. The Grade fours sat a test

on Monday. PIRLS measures student achievement in reading in more than 50

countries in order to help teaching and learning worldwide. Thank you to our

parents for also participating by completing the surveys provided. Hopefully

this will provide some vital information moving forward in education.

This week Mr Marsden, Miss McIntosh, Mrs Clark and myself completed a 6

day course with the Bastow Insitute on “Leading Numeracy”. We have gone

through a rigorous process of analysing our Maths program and data. We have

put in place a whole school maths structure, investigated open ended maths

tasks, and looked into what the best practise mathematics in schools looks like.

Our school was recommended to other schools in the recognition of the work

we have been doing as a school to model. We are proud of the work we have

achieved so far and are looking forward to continually improving and developing

our maths programs.

We aim to create confident and capable mathematicians who successfully

develop the knowledge and skills to employ maths in their everyday lives.

Have a lovely weekend.

Prep Homestead News

WOW, our Preps are almost at the end of their first year! How time flies!

We have been busy bees working away to wrap up the year and

show off all the knowledge we’ve learnt.

The Preps have been doing lots of assessments ready for reports, but also

having lots of fun, particularly with our ‘Celebrations’ inquiry topic.

For Literacy, we have continued with our CAFÉ reading. The Preps have

enjoyed working with partners to practice and develop

their reading skills. Our favourite characters are Lips

the Fish and Eagle Eye. Lips the Fish helps us to sound

out words whilst we use our ‘Eagle Eyes’ to look at the

pictures to find clues.

We also enjoy our Jolly Phonics time where we have some people in ‘Gold

Class’ and we have our ‘Action Stars’ who follow along with the actions.

In Numeracy we have been consolidating our number skills by playing quick

number games and using the interactive whiteboards.

We have recently completed learning about birthdays in our

inquiry topic, culminating in a ‘birthday party’ where we ate

delicious party food (thank you to our parents) and played

some favourite party games.

We are looking forward to a fun filled term ending with our

excursion to PARC!

Thank you to all our parents for your support and our parent helpers each

week. We really appreciate your assistance.

Apps and Cybersafety

These days you can download an app for almost everything – socialising, banking, finding directions,

cooking … you name it, it most likely exists.

Most of these apps are great, but there are some, particularly social apps like Instagram, Facebook and

Snapchat that present some problems when not used correctly. So as teachers and parents of young

people using these apps, it pays to know the basics.

Instagram

Instagram is a photo and video sharing app. Popular among young people

and used by businesses to advertise and endorse products. Users can like,

comment or share posted photos or videos and search based on popular

#hashtags.

What is hash-tagging?

A hashtag is a type of label or tag used on a social network which makes it easier for users to find

messages/images with a specific theme or content. By hashtagging, users are linking their posts with others

using the same hashtag – for example if you use the hashtag #sunrise alongside your post of a picture of a

sunrise, your image can be seen by anyone searching #sunrise – unless your account is set to private.

Using hashtags in your posts is often done to increase people viewing your posts and to gain more

followers.

If you don’t want people seeing your posts – set your account to private before hashtagging or simply don’t

hashtag your photos.

Contact: Setting your account to “Private” means you can accept and reject “Followers”. Only followers can

see your photos even when using hashtags. Users are able to block others from viewing their profile.

Locations can be set when posting pictures.

Content: Profile pictures are never private - any Instagram user can view them. Despite photos not being

able to be saved, screen shots can be taken and there are a number of Apps available that can “regram” or

re-post a picture or video that has been posted on Instagram. If not set to private, users photos or videos

can be searched for by hashtags or on the popular pages, which shows what your Followers have liked or

started following. There is also a search function for searching for users and hashtags. The “Discover

People” tab shows people you may know that are not on private accounts based on existing followers.

Followers can tag others in their photos or videos, if a user is not set to private anyone can see it. You can

remove tags from posts.

Page 8: HEIGHTS HYPE · 2015-10-29 · HEIGHTS HYPE 29th October 2015 Newsletter 20 Dear Parents, Sun Smart As the weather is warming up and Summer is quickly approaching, it is timely to

Conduct: Inappropriate posts or cyberbullying can be reported to Instagram for removal. Users should

think before they post photos of themselves that are provocative and/or provide personal information. See

link in the features column. Users should ensure they are commenting, posting and sharing positively.

For more information on how to modify Instagram settings go to

www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking/instagram

Snapchat

Snapchat is a social media app that allows users to send pictures and

videos that are no longer than 10 seconds in length. Photos and videos can

have filters, text and drawings added to them within the app.

Some points to note:

Users can post multiple pictures and/or videos to their ‘My Story’, which can be viewed by other snap

chatters for over 24 hours.

Celebrities now advertise their username so that fans can add them to their friends list and view their

snapchats.

You can also send messages through the app which disappear within a few seconds.

Snapcash allows user to link their debit card to the App and transfer money to other users.

Content: Although users can choose how long their photo is displayed, there is a function which enables

receivers to REPLAY or SAVE the image.

Contact: Snap chatters can add other snap chatters by hovering one device over the other to pair them.

Snap chatters can also find each other by searching their unique user names. Accounts are also linked to

the user’s mobile number so all contacts in the user’s phonebook will appear via the app with their

Snapchat username.

Conduct: It is important that snap chatters are aware that all photos/comments do not ‘disappear.’ Screen

shots are still able to be taken and can be used to cyberbully and share private content. Users can also

download the app ‘SNAP SAVE’ which allows users to save the Snapchat image without notifying the user. Information courtesy of:
