Hebrew Free Loan was grateful to be recognizedwith the Robert Sosnick Award of
Excellence at The Jewish Fund’s annual meeting inNovember. The award was presented in recognition ofHFL’s Project HEAL (Health EmergencyAssistance Loans) fund, which makes interest-freeloans to members of the Detroit Jewish communityfor medical, dental and related health care expenses.A grant from The Jewish Fund helped establish thisimportant program.
“We are so grateful to be recognized by TheJewish Fund,” said Hebrew Free Loan PresidentHarriet Orley. “The Jewish Fund helped launch ProjectHEAL, and it truly justified its own existence. Whenyou look at how often we have made loans throughthis fund, and how often those loans have beenrepaid and the funds loaned out again, it’s clearthere was a need to target health care loans. In theyears since the creation of Project HEAL, the recyclingfactor of this particular fund has grown to 140 percent, and HFL continues to gather those repay-ments to make new health care loans.”
Appearing on behalf of HFL, Project HEAL borrowerDolores told the annual meeting attendees the movingstory of her use of loan funds to improve her ownhealth, and the great needs of her son.
“I would not have been able to do this withoutHebrew Free Loan and Project HEAL,” Dolores said.
“My son needed significant dental work, and on topof my own needs, the cost was prohibitive. When Itell you his teeth were crumbling before my eyes, Ithink it becomes clear we were desperate for help, and this was not for the sake of vanity. There are justthe two of us, and not many options. I can’t begin tothank everyone enough for creating this fund, andusing it to help us and help the community.”
Also on hand for the award presentation wereMary Keane, who served as HFL Executive Directorwhen the fund was created, Charlotte Dubin, whowrote the original grant proposal to The Jewish Fund, current Executive Director David Contorer, past presidents Michael Berke and Peggy Daitch, and several HFL Board members.
“We join a distinguished list of previous RobertSosnick Award of Excellence winners, all of whomcontribute to the fabric of Jewish life in our area.”said David Contorer. “One of the hallmarks ofHebrew Free Loan throughout the years is that we tryto identify trends and meet the needs of our borrow-ers. The leadership team in charge of developingProject HEAL came up with a way to serve this demo-graphic, and we have seen how well it works.
“Our thanks to Karen Sosnick Schoenberg, MargoPernick and the dedicated officers of The Jewish Fundfor this honor. This is another example of a supportivecommunity partnership.”

November 2015 marked the official 120thanniversary of Hebrew Free Loan Detroit. The
years 1895 through today present a diverse story ofchallenges that mirror the history of our country. From helping hoist the early beginnings of Jewishbusinesses, through the financial devastation of theDepression, Hebrew Free Loan’s doors were open.
Hebrew Free Loan was there when the Jewishpopulation began spreading to suburban homes, needing assistance as they were returning fromWorld War II and finishing college. Our agency heldout its hand when Russian Jews were resettling inDetroit in the 1980s, and were here through the devastation of the 2007 economic downturn. HFLstepped up when floods caused mass destruction inthe Oak Park and Huntington Woods areas in the latesummer of 2014, and have been there for countlessother financial needs throughout the years.
Our archives show a wealth of history in theDetroit community: relationships between HFL andour long-ago borrowers that tell a remarkable tale ofthe times in which our community members lived. Ifyou are interested in pursuing the potential relation-ship of your family with Hebrew Free Loan in theearly 1900s, please call our office at 248.723.8184or e-mail us at [email protected].
The significance of the number 120 in the Jewishreligion refers to “Like Moses, may you live to 120.”Great rabbis of the Talmud such as Hillel, RabbiYohanan Ben Zakkai, Rabbi Akiva, and Rabbi YehudaHanasi, all lived to 120 as well. In Deuteronomy, itwas said of Moses upon his death that “his eye hadnot dimmed, and his vigor had not diminished.”
As Hebrew Free Loan passes 120, our vigor hasnot diminished, either. In fact, we are just gettingstarted!

Aformer preschool teacher with a master’s degreein clinical psychology, Ashley Goldberg always
enjoyed working with young children, and beganoffering short yoga classes to her students at school.“It was a way to make a gentle mind-body connection,to help them ease anxiety, self-regulate and expressthemselves creatively. I realized what I was doing inthose sessions was marrying both my passions in thatone activity, and I wanted to do it all the time. Fromthat thought came Born Yoga.”
Ashley planned a yoga studio centered aroundprograms for kids or for families to experiencetogether, a kind of play space for all, including thosewith special needs. She spent about a year refiningher ideas and her business plan before approachingHebrew Free Loan’s Marvin I. Danto SmallBusiness Loan Program, provided a significantloan and a customized mentor to help with herSeptember opening.
Far from beginning modestly, Born Yoga hastaken off from the start, and Ashley’s dream blossomed.
Born Yoga includes three other teachers and fourpeople rotating at the welcome desk, and Ashley’sparents help out occasionally when needed.
A lot of the business has been through word ofmouth, and the studio is next door to a children’s resaleshop, on the route to the swim center, and around thecorner from The Robot Garage, so the target clienteleis already in the neighborhood when they see her signs.
“Regular classes are ongoing and drop-in, sothey might change slightly in composition each week, but many people come on a schedule, and I’ve reallycome to know the students and their parents very
well,” Ashley said. “Parents stay and sit in the lobbyand watch the classes on the big screen, and I’veseen some of them become friends through seeingeach other regularly.
“Also, our aerial classes, where we do traditionalposes while slightly suspended in a hammock, havebeen quite popular. Those fill quickly. Then we have“Glow-ga” glow-in-the-dark yoga, which is a blast, parent-child classes, and classes up through teens.”
The experience is more than just stretching andposes, Ashley emphasized. “I think the most importantpart of what we do is integrating mindfulness andgratitude discussions in with the poses. For example, for very young children, it can be very simply aboutkindness to ourselves and others, and healthy bodies. For older kids we can talk about treating ourselveswell, liking ourselves, health or body image. Yogamakes you very self-aware, and many great learningopportunities come from that.”
Born Yoga also offers birthday parties, customworkouts for sports teams, and day camps for schoolbreaks that include longer sessions, crafts and lunch.Ashley is planning summer camps, and even planneda curriculum around Girl Scout patches that somearea troops have already experienced. She is considering boys-only classes and remains open towhatever the parents tell her is needed.
“Every day is something new. It’s non-stop, butin a good way. It’s very rewarding to walk in hereand know I had a hand in creating everything here.My dad and I laid the floors, I designed the retail walland the furniture. There are pieces of me everywhere, and people seem to like what we have to offer.”

Emily Shwedel Levin is a dentist in practice inPlymouth who helped pay for dental school
with a JELS (Jewish Educational Loan Service) loan.“What I liked so much about the JELS loan
was how easy they made it for a young personto take out a loan, handle the finances andmake the repayments. I had such a positiveexperience that when the opportunity came to bepart of Hebrew Free Loan, it was just right forme to say yes. It’s nice to give back to the community that helped me.”
Emily is a recent addition to the HFL’s AdjunctCommittee, and is learning the ropes at Boardmeetings and interviews.
“I often have to talk finance with the peoplein my dental chairs, to tell them how much aprocedure will cost, and how we can managepayment. It can be a difficult discussion. So Ithought I would be prepared to hear borrowerstories at HFL, but I was surprised how emotionalI would be. Some stories are sad, some are
amazing, some people come in for joyful reasons, like a wedding, but I’ve just felt like Iwanted to hug people. There are people whohave such great need, and we try to help.”
Emily wants more people in the communityto know that HFL gives loans for a wide spectrumof reasons. “I think perhaps people think of usas a place to go when you’re in trouble and youroptions are limited. Of course, that’s true, butthat isn’t all we are. I want people to know thatthere are so many facets to HFL, different kindsof funds dedicated to different purposes thatmake it possible for people to get help from usfor all manner of good things, too, like educationor a new business.”
Another benefit of her time at HFL is theeffect it has on Emily’s family. “I want my kids tosee giving and volunteerism, to observe me givingback in the same way I saw my parents becomeinvolved in the community. It’s important to continue the cycle.”

“I want my kids to see giving andvolunteerism, to observe me givingback in the same way I saw myparents give.”
It all goes back to my parents, Ruth and SanfordWinnick (z’l).” said Harlene Appelman. “Growing
up, neither of them came from means, and I don’tknow if you could even call them middle class inthose days. They worked their way up. And they hadgood hearts.”
Harlene’s father worked in retail, eventuallyowning an Army and Navy store in Elmira, New York.
“My parents always wanted to help others,”Harlene said. “They recognized that there were people who were in need, and they gave what andwhen they could, but my father said that an outrightgift often made the recipient feel burdened, like thatgift was something you could never properly repay. He felt it could take away your dignity, as if you werea charity case. He also felt very strongly that every-one should be able to celebrate milestones, and thatthey were integral to appreciating life. He didn’t findit at all frivolous to gather people together for important family moments.”
Harlene says Ruth and Sanford Winnick didn‘tlive ostentatiously as adults. They raised their familyand were important role models who helped formHarlene’s character by example, much of which camefrom Jewish values. Which is how the story comesaround to Hebrew Free Loan.
Harlene, whose grounding in those Jewish valuesled her to become a Jewish family educator, won theCovenant Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Educationwhile she worked with the Detroit Federation’s J.E.F.F.(Jewish Education for Families) program. Years ofJewish education experience, as well as her time withJ.E.F.F. and Federation, exposed Harlene to the existenceand mission of HFL, so she was no stranger to howthe agency assisted the community.
Part of the financial award from the CovenantFoundation helped establish the Ruth and SanfordWinnick Fund at HFL, which ties directly to the thingsthat remind Harlene of her parents: Jewish valuesand how simchas, such as a wedding, baby naming orBar/Bat Mitzvah can enhance life and enrich theJewish experience, which is itself an education.
“Life cycle events present opportunities to meshpleasurable experiences and Judaism,” Harlene said.“Hebrew Free Loan is a good way to deliver thoseopportunities to those who need them, because HFL isa part of the moral compass of the community. For acommunity to operate with integrity, they needoptions for people to fund their life’s adventures. Those are just as much a part of who we are as thework we do. And what Hebrew Free Loan does day-to-day for the community is phenomenal.”

Shabbat MishpatimEach year on Shabbat Mishpatim we pay homage to that portion
of the Torah which sets the foundation for Hebrew Free Loan’sexistence. It reads, in part:
When you lend money to My people,to the poor among you,
do not act toward them as a creditor; exact no interest from them.
Exodus 22:24
We are grateful to rabbis and lay leaders across our community whotook a moment out of their Shabbat services to remind others of thegood works HFL accomplishes daily, who ask us to remember HFLwhen someone we know is in need, and to support it when possible.Shabbat Mishpatim was read this year on February 6, 2016, and wehope the warmth of the message of supporting our family andfriends resonated with everyone who heard it.
Hebrew Free Loan (HFL) is proud to have achieved a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, based on our fiscal responsibility,
transparency, policies and procedures, and efficiencies. With a tipof our hat to our dedicated Board members and professional staff,HFL is truly a lean, well-oiled machine.

AD ME’AH V’ESRIM!Hebrew Free Loan is 120 years old, and we are celebrating all year, looking at our history and the way we’ve evolved,
at our impact on the Michigan Jewish community, and the 120 things we love about HFL. Here’s a sample of some of our favorite things about Hebrew Free Loan:
No. 17: HFL loans can improve lives so that many former borrowers later become donors, helping others and renewing thecycle.
No. 32: HFL offers hope to those in need and who have no where else to go.No. 40: HFL Board members are caring and confidential during all interviews with loan borrowers.No. 66: With the support of HFL, people in crisis find their inner strength to move forward rather than giving up.No. 83: The loan process is designed to set borrowers at ease. The Board and staff work to make it smooth from beginning
to end.No. 91: HFL helps everyone from the young to the elderly! It's great to see that couples starting out can get a loan for a
down payment on a used car, or an elderly couple can get financial assistance to get repairs done around theirhome.
No. 108: Borrowers are not the only beneficiaries of HFL. Each time Board Members conduct interviews, they are touchedby the interesting, courageous people who come to us.

Small Business LoanProgram has loaned outmore than $1.6 million ininterest-free loans to 67Jewish-owned businesses inMichigan since 2012. Theseloans helped with start-upsand expansion of existingbusinesses. That, alone, isimpressive enough, but thementorship that many of these entrepreneurs havereceived is another amazing benefit of our small businessprogram. Mentorship is another tool HFL uses to go beyondthe loan paperwork and offer support to businesses thatcan make the difference between success and failure.
The mentors paired with Danto Loan borrowers aresome of our Jewish community’s most talented businessminds. They help HFL’s Danto Small Business LoanProgram recipients to launch and expand in the most
thoughtful and strategic ways. Here are some poignantexamples:
Richard has helped The Robot Garage open in twoadditional locations and to connect with grant dollarsfrom The Chase Foundation. Richard continues to helpPaper Goods Plus to greatly expand operations inefficient and effective ways.
Leora worked closely with Born Yoga before itopened, to help refine the target market, outreach andlaunch plans and to provide ongoing coaching to Ashleyin her new venture.
Jon continues to work with Jan-Pro Detroit, coachingthe leadership team as they expand their custodial fran-chises.
David brings his SCORE coaching expertise from theSmall Business Administration to help many of our DantoProgram participants in all phases of their entrepreneur-ial growth-curve.
HFL is so fortunate to have these wonderful mentorsengaged, and we thank them for helping others to betheir best in business.
