Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster skier, sooner or later the skier who wins is the one who thinks he or she can.

At first, joining the Nordic ski team was tossed around as a joke between Cooper and me. As the cross country season con<nued we remembered how JT had killed us in the first mile <me trial of the track season and our following disbelief.  We were stunned at JT’s performance but should we have been? JT had been working out with the best nordic coach in the state while I had been ska<ng and siFng on the bench, mainly siFng on the bench. So as the running season drew to a close we began to consider skiing as a more plausible op<on than before.  AHer siFng on the fence for a couple weeks, it was decided that I was going to ski.

Because of hockey and my ability to skate, I was told numerous <mes that skiing would be easy for me… nothing was farther from the truth. My first skiing prac<ce lived up to Bernie’s predic<ons, “You WILL fall”. As the season con<nued I was able to stay on my feet most of the <me except for when it maQered most like, in races. With plenty of good <mes during the season I realized that Nordic skiing was a lot more fun than just an interlude between cross country and track.

While you might not see me on Nordic skis for a while, I definitely had a great <me on them and on the ground (aHer I fell). Even at the start of track season I have no<ced the difference in my readiness to race and know I made the right decision to ski this winter.

Nordic Skiing

As you can see, Brad has tried many an endeavor. Blessed with incredible hand eye coordination (check this out www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIQ6t7mQk7k) he excelled at many activities. The sport he developed the most affection for is the Nordic discipline of cross country skiing. This is that story.

His nordic career started when he wanted to be like his big sister Emma and get on the skis at Mendon, The first attempts ended in tears, but he was determined. He progressed to skate skis and again many a tear was shed on Raccoon Run. When he was a Junior, Brad would share his story to encourage the younger skiers to keep at it.

In seventh grade, while honing his skills, he caught the ever watchful eye of The Great Bernie Gardner. While skiing at Harriet, Bernie skated after him shouting “Who is that kid I need him on my team”. In eighth grade, Brad dominated. He was so far ahead at a race at Pittsford that Anna Gorbold shouted “Who is that kid, thats not a Mod”.

When he was a Freshman, Brad wanted to be like the BIG boys, Bobs and Mangan. He wanted a huge motor, big muscles and six pack abs. Well Brad, you got your wish! Brad took great joy when he qualified for the sectional team. He told me it was really cool the first time Bernie said “sectional kids come with me” and he got to go.

Through the years, Brad learned to be an accomplished skier, a strong leader, and most importantly, genuine at heart. The Denton family would like to thank all the coaches who mentored Brad during his skiing career.

“Luv you ‘B’. Mom. “I love you man”. Dad.

As a freshman, Brad was 15th at Sectionals…as a sophomore he was 2nd! Yeah, WOW!And from that moment on, Brad was big time.I have a lot of treasured memories of Brad’s career, one that sticks with me is from the Junior - 2 Festival that he, Kevin and I all attended in Jackson New Hampshire. After the races, we stopped at the Nike Outlet in North Conway, (not that I know where every Nike outlet is or anything), and Brad got the deal of the century… a solid black puffy coat for $20.00! Now, as we all know, anyone who is anyone wants to sport the solid black puffy coat…with a hood! But I never saw Brad wear it! I guess he just didn’t need to dial up his “cool factor” here at HFL. I am thinking he has been saving it for next year so he can impress the college ladies.Nice Brad… Nice!

Christian Cole:

Senior Reflections By: Bernie Gardner

Brad Denton:

Brad has been an HFL Nordic star for a number of years. It seems like he emerged on the scene fully formed and racing at the front of the races, although I know that wasn’t the case. I seem to remember him getting some award back in the day for being the clueless rookie, although looking at Brad now; you could never imagine he was ever a rookie. Equally adept in classic and skating, Brad has keep us in contention for every team title since his sophomore year where he made an amazing jump in performance from the previous season.

Christian has only been at HFL for two years, so I have no historical perspective on him other than he is a hard worker who for some reason, stirred up the 10th grade girls in anger over his treatment of them. I guess he just doesn’t give them the “respect” they feel he should, but for some reason, he bugs them. I loved it.

From a skiing standpoint, Christian made huge leaps in results this season, his first ever in the sport. Starting with falling every 10 yards and looking spastic in doing so, Christian advanced to hardly ever falling and when he did, he did it in spectacular fashion. Sort of like seeing a car wreak at 200 miles an hour. I tried to start him out in the JV ranks, but he wanted to sit in the back of the bus, so that meant he had to get good enough to race Varsity, so being a goal oriented person, Christian clawed his way into the Varsity ranks… and did well right from the start.Besides giving us another hard worker on our team, Christian proved that you don’t have to start skiing when you are two years old. He succeeded this season with determination and willpower, and that’s all anyone needs.

Kevin Hoose:

Kevin has been an impact skier at HFL all the way back to his freshman year where he made States finishing 10th at Sectionals. An endurance star of all seasons, based on his stellar career in cross country running, Nordic skiing and track, “HOOOOOSE” is not only a call bellowed through out the woods, it has become a name identified with HFL Nordic excellence.

(A little known fact is that Kevin has a special spot in the HFL record book as he won the Classic Sectionals in 2009 and again won it in 2011, one of only two people, to win the title, lose it, and then win it back)!Kevin has had many a golden day racing in the HFL black and gold, both in relays and in distance races and his highlights are too numerous to cover here, but one that sticks out for me was his 3rd leg of the States classical relay in the 2010 State Meet.Held at Bristol, he took us into first place and then shattered the field in what was the fastest split of the day. He touched off to Steve Mangan who would complete the victory which clinched us the team State Title. With the loss of Peter, the pressure of the race, and the expectations of all who came to watch that day, I make that one of HFL’s finest moments.Kevin will be missed, but our loss is Bowdoin’s gain. Luckily though…we still have Maddie!

Kaylin Beiter:

Kaylin has worked her way up the HFL skiing ladder. From JV to Varsity, then from Varsity to the HFL Sectional Team, Kaylin climbed higher and higher each season, yet not qualifying for the Sectional Team until her Junior Year. Given this chance - she would make the most of her opportunity and finish 12th, the last spot to qualify for the State Meet.

This year, using that experience, Kaylin was a consistent scorer for us all year and in February, moved up to 8th at Sectionals and made her second straight state championships.A huge testament and reward for her hard work and perseverance.Somehow drowned out by last year’s seniors like Amelia and Katie, Kaylin this year made her voice heard, at least in the “Canyonaro” going to and from Hardwood Hills! Asking questions, singing songs, asking more questions, singing more songs, Kaylin made up for her earlier silence in spades and managed to drown out the sophomores, which I thought was impossible.I can only imagine what her college coach has in store on those van rides next year!Good luck Kaylin, your skiing career has only begun.

Page 18: HFL Nordic Memory Book 2011

The 2010 – 2011 season was memorable for a number of reasons, the first being that there was actually snow!

We were on snow almost everyday starting around Thanksgiving, albeit sometimes on a dusting of snow on the field turf or on the mud and slush of Semmel Road, but somehow, we managed to get the job done.

There was a lot of classic training, as this was a classic year, and good tracks at Semmel road and Harriett helped that learning process.. All that work came to light at the January 27th classic race on the “South Meadows” course.

On that day in the Varsity races, we put 4 Cougars in the top 6 on the boysʼ side and 8 of the top 9 on the girls, a real show of depth and expertise. Once again, hard work pays off.

Another special day was the “Under the Lights” skiing on February 7th This year was a big hit, as we skated around the athletic fields under the lights with a mist of liquid “snow” changing into snow flakes. Fast, warm and unique.

The County and Sectional Championship races displayed the camaraderie that makes our teams so special as when a group of HFL athletes were not racing, they were cheering their hearts out for their teammates.

And when they were racing, they were giving it just that little bit extra for each other.Clothes on, clothes off, in costumes, or in uniforms, the support for each other is what sets us apart. (Although next year there will is a mandatory “Clothes ON” stipulation for all cheering groups, just call it the “Cooper” rule).

At the State Meet in Lake Placid, we had two days of solid performances that led to the Boys taking a Silver Medal in the overall team competition and a bronze in the relay, and the girls winning a Gold Medal in the overall, and a bronze in the relay. A lot of hard work, and sweat went into those results and I am very proud of everyoneʼs efforts.

Following that, we had thirteen racers go on to USSA events including Junior Olympics, the Eastern J-2 Festival and the Eastern High School Championships, the largest contingent from any single program in NY State.

And so, as you are reading this, one ski season of adventures has ended…but the next has just begun.

Remember… the best never rest!

HF-L Nordic skiers earn winsBY DONNA MACKENZIE

SENTINEL January 13, 2011

Some new faces are taking to the ski trails for the Honeoye Falls-Lima Boys and Girls Varsity Nordic Ski teams this winter as familiar faces such as Steve Mangan, Jesse Brunett and Amanda Moreland took their talents to college. However, the new kids on the block are proving to be chips off the older blocks. Coach Bernie Gardner welcomes back 13 boys and 13 girls who were in the program last year when both squads won the Section V and state titles. Veterans of the boys team are seniors Brad Denton and Kevin Hoose, juniors Joe Brunett, Jiuru Li and Peter Newman and sophomores Langton Douglas, John Lawler, Patrick Leo, Cole Matthews, Joseph Moore, J.T. Paganelli, Ryan Pasquarette and Steve Reinke. Newcomers are senior Christian Cole, juniors Cooper Roach and Colby Shuler, sophomores Devon OʼBrien, David Schell and mason Tyrell and freshmen Brad Alexander, Christopher Cadregari, Killian Coddington, Ryan Guerra, Tyler Gushue, Jeffery Richter, Tyler Urckfitz and Henry Wickus. Returning for the girls team are senior Kaylin Beiter, juniors Hanna Barnes, Emily Beikirch, Katie Hall and Maggie McGrane and sophomores Colleen Corey, Jenna Hanson, Emmy Held, Maddie Hoose, Kendall Knaak, S i o b h a n L a m b e r t , L i z z y McGuire, Tori Simpson and Becca Wendland. Joining them are sophomores Hannah Cole, Heather Kase and Jordan Reed, freshmen Alexandrea Costanza, Mar tha Mevorach , A l l i son Pamper, Grace Shasate, Terra Sheridan, Sara Wick, Keena Wildman and Jenna Williams

HF-Lʼs Kevin Hoose, shown here winning the Pittsford Sprint Championships last week, is one of two seniors that are leading the undefeated boys team this winter.

HONEOYE FALLS — When youʼre the defending state champions, you have a bulls-eye that sits directly on your back. Honeoye Falls-Lima Nordic ski coach Bernie Gardner will agree with that. Gardner had coached the Cougars to eight consecutive state titles until Queensbury (Sec. II) snapped that streak for both the boys and girls in 2009. But last year HF-L would return the favor by getting the clean sweep and dethroning Queensbury in both. These two teams could meet again for all the marbles at this yearʼs NYSPHSAA Nordic Ski Championships in Lake Placid March 1-2. But thereʼs still plenty of work to do in order for that to happen.

“The Pittsford-Mendon boys and girls could both upend us in Section Five,” said coach Gardner. “The Mendon boys have two seniors that are right with us and they are very strong. The Mendon girls have junior Allyssa Likly and sheʼs been ripping it up and has

won a lot of individual events. I donʼt expect it to be a walk in the park.”

The Section 5 Championships will take place Feb. 12 and Feb. 14. The distance race will take place on the 12th at Harriet Hollister Park, while the relay event will take place on the 14th at Bristol.

The HF-L boys and girls have each captured 10 straight team titles respectively. So far this season, thanks to some outstanding weather, both squads are undefeated.

“The weather has been outstanding and ideal conditions, especially the last month,” said coach Gardner. “Our first meet of the year was canceled but since then everything has been great. The cold temperatures have been the biggest help.”

The girls are led by a youthful group, with just one senior on the roster. Junior Hanna Barnes is the top performer and she is followed closely by a pair of sophomores in Emmy Held and Colleen Corey, and an eighth-grader Riley Douglas. The lone senior, Kaylin Bieter, is also currently in the Cougarsʼ top five. Others to look out for include sophomore Hannah Cole, who Gardner says “never skied before this year and was a former hockey player but has really performed well for us.” Two more sophomores, Maddie Hoose and Jordan Reed, should also contribute towards the Cougarsʼ attempt for Lake Placid. “Our girls are really deep this year and I expect them to be at their best when it counts,” said coach Gardner.

Unlike the girls, the HF-L boys are led by a pair of seniors in Kevin Hoose and Brad Denton. Hoose, one of the stateʼs top cross-country runners, missed most of the fall season because of a stress fracture, is back healthy and is hitting on all cylinders this winter. Hoose and Denton were both on HF-Lʼs state title team a year ago with Hoose coming up huge with the fastest split of the day during the relay event. A trio of sophomores — Langton Douglas, JT Paganelli and Cole Matthews — are in the Cougarsʼ top five. “Led by those two seniors, when theyʼre on their game, they can go one-two with anyone in Section Five,” said coach Gardner. “We also have the depth with those sophomores right below them.”

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT ITHoneoye Falls-Lima skiing attempts to add to trophy case

WRITTEN BY GARRETT FALK March 1, 2011

Honeoye Falls-Lima is synonymous with Section V Nordic skiing success. The Cougars, deep in skiing tradition, will look to add two more titles to their mantle today at the New York State Championships at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid. Coming off Section V championships on both sides, HF-L will look to use the momentum to defend its state titles. "On the boys side we have a good mix," head coach Bernie Gardner commented. "Kevin Hoose, the sectional champion, is our leader and the anchor of our relay." Gardner continued discussing the HF-L girl's team, "Similar to the boys we have a mix of experience and rookies. "I think we've been training really hard and we're as good as were going to get." Alyssa Likly of Pittsford Mendon is the reigning Section V champ and will look to improve on a third-place finish at the state meet last year. "The state meet is a totally different experience," Likly said. "There are so many more competitors and I've raced with a bunch of these girls so I know it's going to be a challenge." The girls will kick things off today at 10 a.m. with the 7.5K classic race and the boys will hit the slopes at 11:15 a.m. for the 10K classic. On Wednesday morning, the girls 3K skating relay will begin at 10 followed by the boys at 11:15.

Mendon skier Alyssa Likly wins title

Alyssa Likly lived up to the billing on Tuesday as she became the first Pittsford Mendon girls skier to capture the state individual Nordic skiing title. Likly finished the course at Mount Van Hoevenberg in 27 minutes, 11 seconds to defeat Queensbury's Brittany Wilson by 19 seconds. "It's unbelievable," Likly said about the win. "I've competed in the Junior Olympics and this moment tops it as my best skiing accomplishment." After day one of competition, the Honeoye Falls-Lima girl's team sits in first place by 10 points over Queensbury. On the boy's side, Queensbury holds a 12-point edge over the Cougars. "The trick for us is to have our two sophomores stay close enough in the first two legs of the relay tomorrow," HF-L coach Bernie Gardner said of the boy's competition. "If we can stay close enough and get it to our anchors, I think we can win." The skiing picks back up today in Lake Placid with the girls 3K skating relay at 10 a.m..

Section V wins four state skiing titles

On the nordic side, the Honeoye Falls-Lima girls claimed their second consecutive championship and Alyssa Likly, a junior at Pittsford Mendon, was the overall champion at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The Cougars boys team took second place. "It was unbelievable," said Likly, who came in third place at states last year. "I'm still trying to take it all in. I didn't expect to win but I trained really hard last summer and it paid off."

The Section V boys and girls swept the sectional rankings in nordic and alpine. "Section V is like Norway on a smaller scale," said HF-L nordic coach Bernie Gardner in trying to put the area's success into perspective. "We may not always win but we'll be right there to take second or third. It's a great culture in Rochester. "We sharpen each other up in sectionals so whoever makes it out of there is battle hardened by the time states come around.

"Burgart said that at the banquet following the races, she heard a lot of familiar names and schools. "It seems like every team was from Section V," Burgart said. "It's like Rochester is a breeding ground for skiers." This year's nordic events were classic races but they move to a skating technique next year, which means Likly is hungry to repeat. "I've got to stay super-competitive," said Likly. "We have the best coaches that could be in Section V. Plus, skating is my favorite, so I'm excited."

With sincerest gratitude to:

Our Coaches: Bernie Gardner, Jana Gardner and Brett Daggs for your advice, wisdom, patience, tolerance, humor, time and friendship. You have taught us all that we are more than just a group of athletes, but a team sharing a common interest and interconnectivity. We are blessed to part of HFL Nordic!

Dave Ghidiu: For continuing to attend early morning workouts, practices, meets and trips. We miss having you at HFL everyday and are honored that you still dedicate so much time to us. Thank you also for all the pictures, videos and math challenges.

Race Officials: Our HFL representatives Bob Bauer, Laurel & Dave Newman and all parents who volunteer at meets; thank you for your punctuality, attention to detail and dedication to our sport.

The Wax Team: Thanks to Bernie, Charlie & Brian Gardner for your expertise and skills.

Groomers: To Fred Vogt, RXCSF & Bristol; we thank you for the hours spent grooming and preparing for our practices and meets. Your commitment to Section V Nordic Skiing is greatly appreciated.

Sectional Volunteers: To everyone who assisted in setting up the food tents, announcers table and to those who provided food. Such amazing contributions from HFL. A special thanks to Maureen & Bob Dykes for your thorough list and assistance in setup; and to Brian Hoose and Curt Barnes for announcing.

Photographers: To the Hansons, Hooses, Helds, Leos, Newmans, Reinkes, Paganellis, Bernie and Ghidiu; for sharing photos all season long and for your contributions to the yearbook and banquet slideshow.
