High Integrity Pressure Protection System

HIPPSPuer-Sweiven’s HIPPS solutions are designed and built in accordance with the IEC 61508 and 61511 Functional Safety Standards. Puer-Sweiven oers a range of customized SIL-3 capable High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) for over-pressure protection. This over-pressure protection solution leverages our expertise of over seven decades in isolation valves and valve actuation systems, as well as extensive safety system application engineering experience.

What is HIPPS?A High Integrity Pressure Protection System is a specialized type of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) designed to quickly isolate a downstream system from a high-pressure source. HIPPS are typically certied up to SIL-3 and provide the owners/operators with one of the most reliable over-pressure protection methods oered in the market today.

The components of a HIPPS package primarily consist of:Initiators/Sensors to detect a high-pressure event.

Logic Solver containing the execution program that monitors the sensors and triggers action when a safety demand is needed.

Final Control Elements, typically consisting of a valve, actuator, and various instrumentation, to carry out the corrective action in the eld by bringing the process to a safe state.

Where is HIPPS used?Virtually everywhere. Any place a potential high-pressure scenario presents a safety, environmental, or economic risk, a HIPPS may be used to mitigate that risk. Most commonly, HIPPS are used where aring or conventional pressure relief devices are not desirable or practical.

A few application examples:Installations that lack are capacity or where are modications are not possible.Process uid is toxic, ammable, or environmentally “un-friendly”.Traditional relief devices are dicult to apply, i.e. multiphase venting, extremely fast or poorly understood reaction rates, polymerization (plugging) possible, etc.Activated relief devices are dicult or expensive to reset or replace.

Known as the last line of defense, HIPPS deliver a continuous measure of safety positioned to reduce the operational risk associated with the likelihood of an overpressure event. It supports a source isolation within seconds and can be done at a much lower cost compared to installing a new are and header system.

What are the Advantages of HIPPS?HIPPS can monitor and detect overpressure events and react faster than conventional systems similar to safety relief valves. Unlike other safety relief devices, once the overpressure scenario is reduced or removed, the system can go back online without the need to install a new relief device or the need to have scheduled re-calibration of relief devices. HIPPS also provide the added benet of isolation. Isolation of the high-pressure source could mean minimal or reduced aring, smaller required venting areas, less inventory loss, and even the possibility of piping down-rating.

HIPPS also oers a solution to mitigate risk in cases where:High-pressure and/or ow rates are managed. The environment is to be protected. The economic sustainability of a development needs improvement. The risk prole of the plant must be reduced.
