Location

Highclere is a lovely North Hampshire village just 4 miles to the south of Newbury and is the home of the fabled Downton Abbey. Newbury offers shopping, schooling and cultural facilities with the famous Watermill Theatre and has a main line rail service to Paddington providing excellent links to London and the M4 at junction 13 just to the north of the town accessed via the Newbury Bypass. The North Wessex Downs is a stunning area of countryside which is one of the best kept secrets of this area with its wonderful walking and cycle routes.

“I’m acting as executor for the late Dorothy Gribble (affectionately known as DR), a well-known figure in

Highclere, who had the house built especially for her in 2001

in part of the grounds of her old family home, which was later

sold off,” explains Pat. “DR was an actress, remembered for her

role in an early episode of ‘Dr Who’. She also wrote stories and

made recordings of poetry. Her mother held recitals in the old

house, inviting musicians to play; DR continued this tradition in

the large drawing room of her new home, accompanied by tea

in the dining room. DR’s mother was known as a healer, so DR

incorporated a further reception room in the new house for the

use of local healers, which could now be used as a family room

or study.”

“DR had the house built to the highest specification, using oak for the hall floor, the staircase, the doors and the kitchen

units for instance,” elaborates Pat. “The kitchen has an Aga as

well as an electric cooker and there’s a large pantry too.”

“The front and back gated entrances both lead to extensive areas of parking,” continues Pat. “At the rear, the hayloft building was part of the old

property and has mainly been used for garden storage. The gardens, of course, being

part of the original grounds, are very mature with extensive lawns, shrubs, trees, fruit

trees, and a pond with a bridge. There’s also a soft fruit cage and a greenhouse.”

“Upstairs, DR had her own suite of rooms; separated by a door and lobby, it included en suite facilities, a bedroom and an office. With guests in mind,

there are two large double bedrooms, which share a bathroom, and an en suite double bedroom – in the event, all virtually unused. There’s also a fitted loft staircase that leads to

a large boarded over roof space. Potentially, there’s further storage space over the double garage. The garage is a bit unusual because it has a garage door at the back in addition

to the two at the front, so you can drive through. A handy covered way links the kitchen door to the garage.”
