JUNE 2012
36th Edition
‘Flame of Hope’
Omagh Midsummer Carnival 2012 All Year 8 pupils took the opportunity to work with the circus company, ‘Streetwise’ from Belfast to make flame headdresses from card and tissue paper. On Saturday 23rd June, Shauna Dillon, Katie McCanney, Jodie Mullan, Amy Gallagher and Dora Gorog joined many other schools and community groups in the Omagh Midsummer Carnival. They braved the wind and rain and walked up through the streets of Omagh. As we can see from the photos it was a great experience. Well done girls!!!
Kornel Lovei Year 12 enjoys All-Ireland success Kornel from “the Omagh's Tae Kwon Do Club recently travelled to Dublin
to compete in the All Ireland Open Championship. Up against members of
other Northern Irish clubs, Irish clubs and competitors from Scotland,
England and Wales, Kornel Lovei (16) won the gold medal in
'Free Sparring', and silver in his 'Patterns' category - both in the Junior
Division. As his instructor, Mr McCourt, explained: "In his free sparring
matches, Kornel moved around the ring excellently, moving in quickly to
get his points and then defending well. This was his first major
competition and he did exceptionally well to hold his own against more
experienced fighters, and those of higher belts. The club is really proud
of him." Well done and congratulations Kornel from all at St John’s.
Congratulations to Megan McBrearty who won
1st place in Individual Girls 1st Aid Competitions
held in Virginia, Co Cavan recently.
Megan is now going on to represent Omagh in the
All Ireland Competitions in Limerick.
We wish Megan the best of luck!!!
Congratulations to Clare McCann on winning
1st place in the Under 12 group Cheoil
Fermanagh Fleadh. This involved playing
various instruments in a group. Clare also won
1st place in the Ceili band competition.
Congratulations Clare!
END OF YEAR SCHOOL TRIP
The end of year trip for all pupils took place on the 21st June to Lisburn. It was a fun-filled
day with plenty for everyone to enjoy! We began the morning with an enjoyable shopping
tour of Bow Street Mall which had over 70 stores to visit. This was followed by lunch.
In the afternoon the pupils visited the Lisburn Leisure Park just outside the city centre,
where they had the option of either a relaxing afternoon at the cinema to see ‘Men in Black’
or ‘Top Cat’’, while those looking for a more active afternoon opted for the swimming pool.
The LeisurePlex boasts the largest leisure pool of its kind in the North of Ireland,
with some of the fastest, longest and wettest water rides in Ireland. The day was
thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and staff.

TYRONE FLEADH WINDOW DISPLAY
The Tyrone Fleadh was held in Trillick from June 22nd –
24th. St. John’s GCSE Art Class put up a wonderful
display in Trillick Post Office. The display got rave
reviews. Many people went out of their way to see the
display because they had heard about this visually unique
array of farm animals with titles in Irish.
Since October 2011, twelve Year 11 pupils, accompanied by Miss Bradley, have participated in the Key programme at Roscor Youth Village. This is a cross-border, cross-community initiative, targeting 14-16 year olds, drawn from post-primary schools. The programme is supported by the International Fund for Ireland and is operated in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland. The programme has taken place over 4 residential sessions across the year. St John’s was partnered with two other post primary schools, one from Rossnowlagh and the other from Glengormely.
Throughout each residential, the pupils were given the opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills amongst their peers, develop professional skills improving their future employability, have the opportunity to set up a trading company to sell products at a local Trade Fair and learn about customers, marketing, finance and sales. Each pupil was presented with certificates for a Business Qualification endorsed by the Northern Ireland Council for Curriculum Assessment (CCEA) and the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NCCA).
Each residential consisted of a balance of enterprise and business training and outdoor activities which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The enterprise activities involved training and career pro-spects research, budgetary and numerical exercises, CV preparation, interview techniques and a mock interview. Pupils worked in groups to set up their own business. Each pupil took on dif-ferent roles within the company from marketing to sales person. Pupils had to buy materials and design and make products which were taken to a local shopping centre and sold to the general public. Outdoor activities included hill walking, gorge walking, canoeing, zip line, ar-chery, kayaking, survival skills such as shelter building and safe fire building including an over-night camping experience, water trampoline and much more. The pupils also gained a Level 2 qualification in canoeing.
The pupils really enjoyed this unique opportunity of working with other young adults from different backgrounds, developing their confidence and a better understanding of the world of work. They had great fun in the outdoor activities as well as the enterprise training.
As usual, St John’s pupils shone in all aspects of the programme with many of our pupils picking up prizes. Within the group of three schools, the prizes won by St John’s pupils were:-
Shannon Gallagher – Angel of the group
Damien Mc Quaid – Key performer of the group, Best Company
Chelsea Traynor – Best interview
Tiarnan Sludden – Domestic God, Key personality of the group
Peter Teague – Entrepreneur of the group, Best Company
On Monday 21st May, the graduation ceremony took place in the Waterfront Hall Belfast. Out of 900 students throughout Northern Ireland, three of our pupils were nominated for the top prizes of the day.
Peter Teague and Damien Mc Quaid were members of the Best Company nomination, Tiarnan Sludden was nominated for overall Key Personality of the camp, and Peter Teague was nominated for Key Entrepreneur of the camp. This is the first time St John’s pupils have been nominated for these awards in one ceremony.
On the day, to our delight, Tiarnan won the prize for Key Personality of the camp. Only three pupils out of 900 won this prize! We were equally delighted when Peter won the prize for Entrepreneur of the Year, which was won by 12 pupils out of a total of 900. Peter has now won an all- expenses paid trip to Canada to represent the school and Northern Ireland in the International Young Enterprise conference in Kingston, Canada. We are the only school in the history of the Key Programme to have won both prizes. We would like to express congratulations to all our pupils involved in the Key programme and big congratulations to both Tiarnan and Peter for their very deserving wins. We are so proud of you both!

SPORT’S DAY 2012 The eyes of the athletics’ world once again turned towards Dromore, as St. John’s held its annual Sports’ Day.
Performances of great magnitude were witnessed across the various disciplines.
In the Girls’ Track Events, Shannon Gallagher, Laura McCann, Ellen McGowan and Andrea Gallen all shone. In the Long
Jump, Andrea, Ellen and Laura again all performed admirably. This time, they were joined by Alanna Quinn and Clare
McCann who were among the top prizes.
In the High Jump, Shannon Gallagher and Laura McCann continued their great showing, while Malise McKenna and
Hannah Gallagher joined them in the winners’ circle. In the Shot Putt, Kirby Mullen, Andrea Gallen, Jodie Mullen and
Amy Gallagher were the stand-out competitors.
Feverish intensity surrounded the boys’ competitions. Nutritionists and Personal Trainers had been consulted in recent
weeks as the anticipation reached boiling point. In the track events, Damien McQuaid and Peter Teague led the way among
the Year 10 and 11s. Meanwhile, Shane Pratt, Henrich Adler and Eoin Maguire all performed magnificently. In the Long
Jump, Peter Teague again led the way. Conor McGurren, Ruairi Teague and Daniel Logue all produced performances of note,
and should be very proud.
In the High Jump, Brandon Gallagher, Jack Woulfe and Tomas Hunter were amongst those celebrating. In the Shot Putt,
Colm Corry produced a fine display, which was commended by all. Ronan Slevin was also excellent, as was Pádraig Quinn and
Maurice McCloughan. Peter Teague once again produced a fine performance. All tests for performance-enhancing sweets
came back clean. London 2012 has been set a VERY…VERY…HIGH STANDARD!!!!!!!
Yr 11 ~ GCSE Home Economics Practical Yr 11’s as part of their Home Economics GCSE Controlled Assessment created menus with the aim to follow the rules of the ‘Eatwell Plate.’ Once again students worked hard to produce such a fantastic display of dishes, using all ingredients to the best of their ability. Well done to Peter, Niamh, Rhys, Damien, Grainne, Gabrielle, Alanna and Chelsea. Staff also enjoyed being ‘Master Chef’ judges for the day, under the watchful eye of Ms Latimer.
Year 12 ~ Mass of Thanksgiving
The Year 12 Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated by Fr MacEntee on Wednesday 20th June. The mass was attended by Canon Breen, pupils, parents and staff. The Year 12 pupils took part in the Liturgy and the offertory procession. The choir was beautiful and provided us with a range of lovely hymns and instrumental music. The celebrations continued after the mass with a buffet and a wide selection of delicious home-made desserts. Students and parents then took an emotional trip down memory lane view-ing a slideshow of photos taken over the five years. The morning ended with a surprise presentation to all year 12 students with a ‘Class of 2012’ t-shirt as a keepsake along with their Records of Achievement. This was a memorable morning, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
On Wednesday June 20th Kirsty from Young Enterprise delivered Personal Economics Programme to Year 11, exploring interview techniques, understanding a payslip, interpreting a bank statement, understanding credit and debt. They learnt invaluable skills that will benefit them now
and in their future working life.
