Chair’s perspective

What’s this thingcalled ‘culture?’

I recently was involved in a business semi-nar and the takeaway was “Culture eats strat-egy for lunch every time.”

I can’t tell you who the author of this state-ment was, but the statement itself sticks in mymind. We have all been involved in businessplanning and strategy seminars. We sit aroundtalking about the plan, the strategy, the fore-casting, the economic outlook, etc. but howmany times have you heard or discussed yourculture. For some, culture is an assumption.Which is OK if your culture is vibrant, ener-gized and inviting and therefore your cultureis alive and well.

I’m not here to tell you ho w to find, ana-lyze or create your culture. I just thought weshould all think about our culture and make itmore visible in our business planning and strate-gizing. Culture is like a bank savings accountthat can be drawn on in tough times.

Very similar to the relationship bank thatSteven Covey speaks of in his “Seven Habitsof Highly Effective People.” If your culture isfor lack of a better word “sound,” you can prob-ably be forgiven for miscues and minor bumpsin the road with both your employees and yourcustomers.

So, as you strategize throughout 2012 re-member to include some thought about yourculture. Your employees are going to stay withyou because of your culture, not your strate-

gies. Customers could careless about your strategies, but you can bet they have asense of your culture as theyinteract with you and youremployees throughout theyear.

If both your employee andclient retention is good, youprobably have a good cul-ture. However, like anything

culture can change over the years as employ-ee move, retire, and change occupations. If youdon’t have your pulse on your culture, thatgood culture built up over the years can getaway from you.

Best wishes to all for a productive 2012 andkeep in mind that while you have to plan andhave a strategy, “Culture eats strategy for lunchevery time.” And speaking of culture, let’s makeour Chamber an inviting culture and remem-ber this year’s challenge:

“It is surprising what a man can do when hehas to, and how little most men will do whenthey don’t have to.” — Walter Linn.

Please be a Chamber advocate, and do whatmost people will not do according to Mr. Linn— invite a guest in 2012!

Tom Baker is the chair of the board of direc-tors for Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce.

Step 1: Make sure the goal isrealistic and can be broken downinto small parts. Having a goalto increase sales in 2012 is nota good goal. Stating that youwant to increase sales by 20 per-cent in 2012 is much better be-cause it is specific and measur-able. This goal can be brokendown to measurable units bytime (each month, each week, and each day), and what needsto happen in each time period.

Step 2: Make sure the goal isin front of you each day, andmake sure you say the goal aloudeach day. How long does it taketo do this, 30 seconds, oneminute? Each day is the key.Goals must become habits andthis is the first important habitof goal setting. Ask yourself:What do I need to accomplishtoday to meet my goal for 2012?

Step 3: Break down the larg-er goal into measurable units thatinclude both action items anda timeline. In the goal above, one way of breaking it downwould be to set smaller month-ly goals. For example, the smallgoal might to increase January2012 sales by 20 percent overlast year. The actions I need toaccomplish this might be tospend two hours each Thursday

going door to door to prospectfor new business. Or the actionmight be to call 30 new prospectseach week, or if you are an in-trovert, you might decide to iden-tify 30 new prospects and e-mailthem information on what youdo.

These three simple steps makeall the difference in the worldwhen it comes to goals.

One thing that also should be

added to your goal is your re-ward for reaching your goal.Adding a reward to the goal instep 1 adds a big incentive foryou to focus on the goal eachday.

Make these three steps a habit, and by the end of 2012 youmight find that for once, you re-ally were able to “drain theswamp!”

Follow these easy stepsfor an organized desk

Do these comments sound familiar? “Nowwhere did I put those papers?” “I wish I wasmore organized,” “It was right here a secondago.” Being organized is what most of us desire, but for some this isn’t an easy task. One sim-plified definition of organization suggests thatyou can find what you want, when you want it,with little effort. Successful organizing is de-pendent upon what works best for you so thereis no right or wrong way to organize.

Working in your office can be more produc-tive if you set up the right systems and process-es for your personality. Having an organizeddesk is a goal that I often hear from businessclients. Here are four easy steps to get you start-ed:

1) Remove unused and personal objectsfrom your desk. It’s OK to have a picture ortwo of your family, but any more than that be-comes clutter unless it’s an item that really in-spires you on a daily basis. Collections are bestleft at home where they won’t be a distractionor become dust collectors. One pencil cup, a sta-pler, and some paper clips are usually sufficientfor your desktop. Extras can be stored in a draw-er or supply closet.

2) Keep a wastebasket and recycling binnear your desk. When these bins are nearby, you will be more likely to recycle and toss un-

needed items. 3) Give each current project its own file

folder. Rather than stacking piles on your desk, put the papers into labeled folders. Place labeledfolders into a desktop organizer for a quick find.

4) Clear off your desk before you leave forthe day. Put away files in your labeled folders, write up your to-do list for tomorrow, and straight-en any piles that are left. Having a clutter-freedesk makes it easier to focus on the task at handand will be a welcome sight when you arrive inthe morning.

Having an organized desk means somethingdifferent to each person. Think about what wouldmake you happy and enable you to function moreproductively throughout the day. The conceptof organization can be learned as long as youare open to new ideas and to forming new habits.Start today with these steps to achieve your goalof an organized desk.

3 simple steps to achieveyour 2012 business goals

Page 7: Hillard Chamber Business Monthly 3-2012

The costs of hiring the wrongperson are steep. In addition tothe time dedicated to training thatgoes nowhere, payroll costs canreach hundreds or even thousandsof dollars.

“I should have seen this com-ing” is a common refrain amongbusiness owners who have madepainful hiring mistakes. But it’snot always that easy to tell who’sgoing to be a nightmare employ-ee just from interviews and refer-ence checks. “The worst of bademployees are hard to spot be-cause they are expert at hidingtheir issues,” says Donna Flagg, president and founder of TheKrysalis Group, a human resourcesand management consulting firmin New York City. “That said, thereare a few mechanisms you can putinto place to ensure you reduceyour chances of making a badhire.”

Start with these five:1. Involve other team mem-

bers in your decision. It’s yourbusiness, so it’s only natural tothink you know best when itcomes to hiring someone. Un-fortunately, when relying on a sin-gle viewpoint — even your own— it’s all too easy to make snapdecisions or even overlook hintsof something amiss, which maybe obvious to someone else.

2. Always check references.Follow a process that includesreference checks and numerousinterviews in order to cut downon the amount of mistakes.

3. Google the candidate .Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, Face-book, and even industry articlescan reveal interesting details abouta person that you’d never be ableto uncover in even the best inter-view. This kind of research canalso help you uncover inaccura-cies in the candidate’s résumé.

4. Go with your gut.You mayfeel intense pressure to fill spotsquickly and efficiently. Peopleshould feel excited about a newjob. They should know about thecompany and do their homeworkresearching you. You do not needto be desperate to fill roles with-in your company.

5. Ask tough questions. Don’tbe afraid to dig deep during an in-terview to get to know your can-didates. Follow up candidates’an-swers with, ‘Why?’ or ‘Whatmakes you say that?’This forcesanswers to emerge that are not re-hearsed and enables you to see adifferent dimension of the person.

Hard as it may seem at the time, sometimes not hiring someone isbetter than hiring the wrong per-son. The wrong person may be aquick fix but in the long run theycan do more damage than good.
