Term 1 Week 8
COVID -19 Update
Due to COVID-19 and in response to
social distancing measures
introduced by the NSW Department
of Education, we advise students and
parents that all assemblies,
excursions, parent/teacher
interviews, all major Arts, Sports
activities and events will temporarily
be ceased until further notice.
We are revising hygiene practices this
week. Thank you to Kate Tallon (RN)
for her professional help and advice
in ensuring we are doing all we can to
slow the spread of COVID-19 in our
community.
Three Actions you can take
The health and safety of our students
and staff is paramount here are 3
actions you can take to help manage
the spread.
1. If you are unwell with
respiratory illness, you should
remain at home until
symptoms resolve and, where
appropriate, seek advice from a
medical practitioner (and call
ahead first).
2. Clean your hands thoroughly
for at least 20 seconds with
soap and water https://

v=k1rHk2xTLBM
3. Sneeze and/or cough into your
elbow or tissue, disposing of
the tissue straight away and
then wash your hands
As we all know, things are moving
quickly. The department is working
closely with NSW Health to ensure
we have access to the latest advice
on how to keep our staff, our
students and community safe.
Thank you for your support as we
contribute to efforts to keep our
community as safe as possible
during these unprecedented
times.

Principal

P & C AGM Report The P and C attempted to hold an AGM last week but unfortunately, only 1 executive position was filled. There will be another attempt to fill the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer at an AGM to be held on the 24th March at 7pm. I urge everyone who has an interest in the P and C, the canteen and indeed the ongoing support of your school to attend this meeting. Kent Burgess (Acting Secretary)

SCHOOL NEWS The HSC minimum standard
The HSC minimum standard is part of an effort to
improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes for
students. From 2020, students in NSW will need to
demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and
numeracy to receive their HSC. The HSC minimum
standard is a way of supporting and ensuring students
have a functional level of literacy and numeracy.
The HSC minimum standard is set at Level 3 of the
Australian Core Skills Framework which outlines the
functional skills used in everyday life, for work and
further study.
This framework provides detailed information on the
three areas in which the students will be tested: Reading,
Writing and Numeracy.
The current Year 10 and Year 11 and the online HSC
minimum standard tests
To achieve a HSC in 2021 and beyond, all students must
sit the HSC minimum standard online tests in reading,
writing and numeracy. Each of the three tests are of 45
minutes duration. The writing test consists of a response
of up to 500 words to one written or visual prompt, and
the other two are 45 multiple choice questions.
Schools will advise you when your child will sit the
online tests. Before doing this, however, students can
complete the online practice tests at school using their
Schools Online account as many times as is practicable.
Once the HSC minimum standard is achieved in all three
areas, a student is eligible to receive the HSC.
The administration of these tests is an important job in a
school. Parent support of this administration is very
important, especially in ensuring student attendance. A
letter will be sent to parents/carers about the timing of
the tests. Having students attend school punctually and
ready to sit the test will be very much appreciated by the
team of staff involved.
Support for students with additional needs
Some students with additional needs will be eligible for
provisions for the minimum standard tests. These
provisions can be approved by the principal.
This means it is a good idea to make sure the learning
support team at the school is fully aware of the needs
that concern you and that you have acquired
documentation that confirms your child’s additional
needs. The earlier that the school is aware of the needs,
the better prepared the school will be to determine both
the timing of the test and the extra provisions that will enable
your child to have equitable access to the test.
The learning support team will liaise with the principal about
extra provisions for the HSC minimum standard tests.
Further information
If you would like more information regarding the HSC
minimum standard please contact Anna Murphy, Head
Teacher of Teaching and Learning on 6967 2277. You can also

First Time Competitor Makes it to State
Eight-year-old Ebony Taylor competed at Albury on Wednesday
11th March in her first Riverina Carnival along with George
McKenzie and Jessie MacDonald.
George swam extremely well narrowly missing out on making it
to Sydney bringing home fourth place.
Ebony competed in her 50 m Freestyle age race and came away
with a second place.
Ebony was due to compete in Sydney in early April against other
8-year olds from across NSW. This is an outstanding achievement
and we are very proud of her efforts, even though this event has
now been cancelled.
Ebony is the first primary student from HCS to make it to this
level in a long time and it’s an amazing result for this young
competitive swimmer.
