IconicArchitectureS.C. Johnson Headquarters

Recent revitalization of the historic S.C. Johnson administration building on their campus in Racine, WI required a new landscape to complement the architecture. A successful design bid led to the implementation of a new landscape to complement this iconic Frank Lloyd Wright building.

Drifts of seasonal perennials, native and adapted to the unique Midwest climate, bring dramatic pops of color to complement the earthy tones of the red brick, and emphasize the horizontality of this large structure.

EdibleGardenThis unique project incorporated elements of a minimalist, Asian aesthetic, with an edible landscape. My client wanted a garden that would not only be an oasis, but an active gardening space for their young family.

This was accomplished by using locally adapted fruit-bearing trees and shrubs, woven into the garden. Custom elements, such as a pergola, trellis, steel, crushed granite, and concrete pathway, basalt column fountain, raised garden beds, woden deck, and a paver patio and walkway unify the space.

Bristol Fire Department

A new sacred space was created by incorporating historic elements and commemoration of all those who have served the force for over the last 100+ years.

The historic town bell has been resurrected as a centerpiece in the landscape, placed on a custom-built pedestal, and lovingly restored on a hand-forged iron stand.

The project was celebrated by an official opening ceremony, and featured in several local media outlets.

From tropical climates to the harsh northern winters,myprojectshaveincorporatedawidepaletteofplantmaterials, ranging from USDA zones 4-10. Natives,perennials, annuals, and locally adapted species arealwaysconsideredcarefullyinmyplantingcompositions.

This residence was purchased by a local architect, whowanted to give the overgrown and outdated landscapea facelift. Theproject involved the removalof theexistinglandscapeandbrokenasphaltdriveway,andamodern,lowmaintenancedesignwasdevelopedforthesite.

The use of concrete, granite, and steel edging for thepathways,alongwithcleanlinesechoedthemoderndesignaesthetic of the residence. A variety of textures, colors,andplantmaterialswereusedtocreateexcitementandaruggednaturalbeautyincontrastwiththecrisp,cleanlinesofthemodernstructure.Acustomlightingandirrigationsystemcreateseamlessmaintenanceforthelandscape.

VisioningFrom conceptual design, through project renderings and final construction, I enjoy seeing my design ideas come to life.

Using hand sketches, AutoCad, Photoshop, and 3D modeling, I enjoy presenting my design ideas to clients and collaborating on various projects.

16This example shows the design of a pergola structure that begin with a design sketch, then was modeled using Google SketchUp, and constructed on-site. The structure used custom mill-hewn cypress wood beams and steel plates for strength and stability.

Art Marketing

My recent work includes the re-design, updating, and curation of our company’s website. The old site was dark, visually heavy, and lacked examples of current projects.

My re-design includes large visual graphics, banners including current news and projects, links to Instagram and Facebook, and galleries of commercial and residential projects.

I worked with Google AdWords and a local SEO company to increase ranking for key searches to target areas, and successfully improved our visibility in the Chicago North Shore and SE Wisconsin region.

Design concepts, hand sketches, digital renderings, and 3D modeling are part of my tools as a designer.

Landscape Architecture is a blend of Art and Science, and I was fortunate enough to come into the field at a time where my core skills were trained using traditional hand-drawing techniques, yet becoming well-versed in the digital realm.
