Holy Cross Catholic Church A community of disciples of Jesus Christ called to cele- brate, proclaim, and share the love of God with all people. December 16, 2018 Third Sunday of Advent Good People of Holy Cross. John the Baptist sounds a lot like Pope Francis, in his first apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, “The Joy of the Gospel.” John the Baptist is railing against the Pharisees because they “presume” to think they’re special, they’re better than everyone else, and they say it with arrogance and exclusiveness. John the Baptist says “no” and calls them a “brood of vipers” saying God is in charge and could make chil dren of Abraham out of the stones around them. Pope Francis hasn’t called anyone a viper, of course. People like him because he seems like such a nice guy and is so friendly and down to earth and kind, and he is all those things, of course, but he’s up to something. Softly and humbly, the Pope is calling us all to stop acting like Pharisees, and he’s saying we are. Here’s a comment, for example, that he made in an interview: “The chu rch is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people.” Wow! Pope Francis says: “The church can’t be a self -absorbed group made up of a chosen few. The Eucharist is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak. “The joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis says, “is for all people: no one can be excluded.” I have a recommendation for you, something small and doable. At the next gathering you go to, your next trip to the supermarket, at the next mass, look for the person no one else is talking to, a person you don’t know, and go up and talk to that person. Listen to that person. Be nice to that person, even if that person isn’t Catholic or isn’t Catholic in the way you are, even if that person isn’t on the inside, a part of your inner circle. “Welcome one another,” St. Paul says, “as Christ welcomed you.” It’s up to you to spread the joy of the Gospel to others! Have a great Advent week! Fr. Third Sunday of Advent

Good People of Holy Cross. Softly and humbly, the Pope is calling us all to stop acting like Pharisees, and he’s saying we are. Here’s a comment, for example, that he made in an interview: “The church is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people.” Wow! Considering Stephen Ministry?

If you feel called to Stephen ministry (providing a Christian presence to someone experiencing a period of difficulty) but missed our recent training class, please consider joining the training class at Our Lady of the Assumption (near Oglethorpe University). This would be training with them to participate in Stephen ministry here at Holy Cross. Classes will begin in January and run through May. Most of the sessions are on Tuesdays.
