Saint Bede the Venerable – Feast Day – May 25

Saint Bede was probably born in 672 in Eng-land and by the age of seven was in the monas-tery school. At 29, he was ordained a priest.

His gifts for writing and teaching were noticed immediately. He composed 45 books. Thirty were commentaries on Scripture; others were on the lives of the saints and secular subjects.

His most widely recognized work was the Eccle-siastical History of the English People, a histo-ry of the Church of early England and Ireland. Bede’s whole life was dedicated to faith and learning. He died as simply as he had lived.

He summoned the monks to his bed, gave them each homemade gifts, dictated the last line of his book to his secretary, and died sing-ing the Glory Be, his favorite hymn. Saint Bede is the patron of historians.

Holy Rosary Catholic Church THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

May 24, 2020

All catechesis flows from the liturgy nothing is as im-portant as what happens at the Sunday Mass. Christ is present in four fold ways, in the bread and wine, the Presider, the word of God and the community gath-ered. But for a lot of people the Sunday mass and readings and homily goes too quickly. In order for peo-ple to think back on the mass, we will have the “Question of the Week”. The purpose of the “Question of the Week” is to bring together people of all ages to learn about and share their faith. The question will be relating to one of the readings from Sunday’s Mass. The question will allow different ministry groups and families to break open the word and share faith throughout the week.

Question of the Week: Adults: With whom have you shared the Good News of Jesus in the past month? Children: What Good news about Jesus could you share with someone? Reading 1: Acts 1:1-11 Reading 2: Eph 1:17-23 Gospel: Mt 28:16-20

A MOUNTAIN IN GALILEE

The book of Acts tells us that the Ascension of Je-sus into heaven took place near Jerusalem. Jesus told them "not to leave Jerusalem". Why then, does Matthew say that the event happened at a mountain in Galilee? The answer may be that there were two different traditions of where Jesus' departure took place. Another possibility is that Matthew interprets the mission of the Apostles as beginning at their homes in Galilee, from where they went forth. Finally, there is a distinct tradi-tion in Jerusalem that the Mount of Olives was home to Galileans while on pilgrimage to the holy city. It would have been a convenient stopping point on the way from Galilee. Hence it might have been a "little Galilee" just as some cities have im-migrant sections like "little Italy", etc.

Commission of the Apostles Jesus speaks to the eleven admit-ting his full authority. He commis-sions them to make disciples of all people, to baptize them. Jesus also promises to be with them to the end of the world.
