country. This international program unites

the car wash industry each year on

November 11. Whether observing Veterans

Day, Remembrance Day or Armistice Day,

we unite together as a whole, and provide

FREE CAR WASHES to ALL veterans

and service personnel.

Founded in 1998 by a single car washoperator, the program has grown froma handful of washes participatingto 2011’s record-breaking year that included:

• Adding 2 additional countries, Australia and New Zealand;

• Having 638 wash companies totaling 1,446 locations participate;

• Exceeding our 2011 goal by washing 119,317 vehicles.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: Any type of wash can participate as long as they are giving free washes:

• In-Bay Automatic

• Exterior Service Automatic

• No proof of status is required – simply trust and honor.

• All participants need to report their wash totals** at graceforvets.org on November 12.

• Yearly registration is required to participate to ensure recognition as a participating wash.

How Can You Make This a Great Event?Make it a fun-filled day for the veterans, service personnel AND your staff!

• Start the day off with an announcement to your staff reminding them of the meaning of this special day.

• Play patriotic music throughout your facility.

• Invite local military recruiters. Active military personnel enjoy speaking with those who have served.

• Hold a live radio remote.

• Serve hot dogs, donuts, coffee or other snacks as an added way to say thanks and add some fun to the day.

• Have greeters on hand to greet the veterans and thank them for their service.

• Wear Grace For Vets attire for better recognition of the program.

NOTE OF GRATITUDE...

My father started our fi rst car wash in 1954. It’s one of my three exterior conveyors today. Over those 56 years, we have done a charity event for our community mostly every year: March of Dimes, Make a Wish, American Heart Association, local Kiwanis, Fraternal Order of Police, local schools and teams. Never have we had the response, the appreciation and fun as with giving free washes to veterans.

Putting up fl ags, banners, wearinghats and shirts for employees, makes it fun for the staff and dresses up the sites. Spending money on advertising and promotion spreads the word that everything in life is not about money and that it’s true: “Tis’ better to give than receive”. The goodwill is immeasurable.

It really means something to our vets. I’ll never forget the year a young woman came in and asked if she could have a wash for her terminally ill father, a veteran of WWII. We obviously said: “Sure!” Three hours later, she’s back paying for her personal car and her dad (pajamas and robe) is with her. He had to come, shake my hand and thank me himself.

To me it was just a free car wash…to him…it was the last time someone would thank him for protecting our freedom.
