It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way. Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfort-able! Remember, God didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

St. James Altar Society Annual Thanksgiving Dinner: Will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 pm in the St. James Hall. All society members and their families are invited and asked to bring a side dish or a dessert. Non perishable foods for GCAM will be collected. Following the meal games will be played so bring your dominoes.

PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persis-tence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishon-esty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persis-tence, the relentless, unwaver-ing pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate per-sistence in pursuing us, seek-ing to win our hearts. Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three

Antorcha Guadalupana: Our Catholic Community has a great tradition of receiving the Torch of Guadalupe, hand-carried from Mexico City to New York as a symbol of Mary, Evangelizer of the Americas, and a call to unity among all her people. The Torch will arrive in Gonzales the evening of Fri-day, Oct. 25, and will be celebrated with a special mass at 7 pm at Sacred Heart.

Gonzales Catholic Cemetery clean-up for All Souls Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at 9 am. Please remove any glass items and old flowers. Place flowers and other items next to tombstones. Anything left around the perimeter of the grave site will be picked up for lawn mowers and lawn care.

All Souls’ Days is fast approaching, boxes and slips will be placed at the church entrances for you to submit the names of those you wish remembered in our Novena of Masses begin-ning Nov. 2. Special Masses for those days are as follows:

Oct. 31-Nov. 1 - All Saints’ Day - a Holyday of Obligation: Masses Oct. 31, 6 pm SJ; Nov. 1, 6:30 am SJ; 7 pm SH; 7 pm SP.

Nov. 2, 6:30 pm Mass at Gonzales Catholic Cemetery. Bring a chair!

Nov. 2, 6:30 pm Mass at Waelder Community Cemetery Mass. Bring a chair! Annual Presbyteral Convocation, Nov 4-6: Fr. Stan and Fr. Mike will be attending the Convocation. Communion Ser-vices will be held in place of our usual daily masses.

Remembering those who have died during the past year: 2 pm, Sunday, Nov. 10 at St. James, we will remember our pa-rishioners and their immediate family members who have died since last All Souls' Day. Anyone wishing to remember an immediate family member at this special liturgy should call our office, 672-2945, to add them to the list. At the mass, their name will be called and you and your family will be in-vited to come forward and light a candle in their memory. A brief reception will be held at St. James Hall after the mass; all are invited! To help create a year-to-year analysis for planning, the parish will be recording the total attendance at weekend Masses during the month of October. This Activity does not call for any action on your part, but simply for your informa-tion.

Congratulations and blessings to Jose Cruz Ramirez & Ma-ria Blanco; Mario Montano & Maria Ruiz, who celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony this coming Saturday. May they receive our community’s blessing. Please remember in prayer Mr. Robert Villareal and Mr. Paul Villareal, III, who recently died.
