New York City-based Hudson Concrete Polishing made its New York Fashion Week (NYFW) debut at the Marc Jacobs Fashion Show, held at the Lexington Avenue Armory on February 14, 2013. Creative Engineering, a design firm headquartered in New York City, commissioned Hudson Concrete to develop the runway just five days before the show.

The round catwalk, which spanned 80 feet, was a wood platform finished with decorative sand and cement. “My team of artisans fashioned the runway into a moonscape with an urban aesthetic,” explains Paul Huneck, owner of Hudson Concrete, “using Arapido, an innovative cement product, and pigmented sand.”

Huneck understands the world of high fashion and the importance of creating a meaningful retail experience. Hudson Concrete has made custom concrete floors for Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Sean John and other prestigious brands for nearly a decade. “The way that a floor is designed has a tremendous impact on the overall perception of the space and brand,” says Huneck. “Lighting, intensity of color, and tonal and textural differences guide our technical and creative processes, and the result is critically important to our success, as well as our clients’ success.”

The process began with a 12-square-inch sample, which was approved by celebrated set designer Stefan Beckman. Hudson Concrete successfully replicated the textural and color effects onto the runway, which measured 5,000 square feet, creating the stage that Beckman was looking for to showcase the Marc Jacobs line. Concrete was applied using an industrial sprayer, and then custom-pigmented sand was artfully broadcast onto the cement. A strategically placed ‘sun’ cast golden-brown hues over the moon-shaped runway, drenching the venue in sepia tones.

Experience and creative instinct guided Huneck and his team. The process was labor-intensive and highly experimental, but the dramatic effect dazzled guests. “Creating designer concrete flooring is equal parts art and science,” Huneck reflects. “Each project begins with textbook consideration of the visuals and material elements, but a true concrete artisan relies heavily on creative instinct.”

Hudson Concrete is available for new concrete floor installations, renovating and polishing existing slab, as well as special projects.
