Belgians at the IHF

In 1924, our country was one of the founding members of the International Federation, together with seven other nations. This involvement has naturally led to our representatives often holding important positions within the IHF, which was initially based in Brussels. The most famous among them is certainly René Franck, who sat as general secretary from 1950 to 1966 and then as president from 1966 to 1983. Since 1984, a trophy bears his name, the “René Frank Fair Play Trophy”. Every two years, it is awarded to the team or personality having demonstrated the most sportsmanship over a period of two to four years.

However, many other Belgians have also had the honour of occupying important positions on different committees. Robert Lycke was General Treasurer, while Maurice Fraikin, Michel de Saedeleer, Dominique Aché and Claire Monseu-Peeters have held official positions on various committees. This harmonious shared history has helped to create a beautiful relationship built on trust between the IHF and our country.

What else? During the “Hockey Revolution Congress” held in Marrakesh last November, the President of the ARBH, Marc Coudron, was re-elected as a member of the Executive Board of the IHF !

Story of the dayKeep it coolThe big surprise of this tournament is undoubtedly the heatwave. The weather is one of the main concerns for every organiser of any outdoor event in Belgium. But usually it is for fear of the event being rained out. On the contrary, these days some places around the hockey venue that may be cause for concern for the lack of water.

Particularly exposed to the sun, the players are the first to suffer from the heat. Surrounded by a skillful staff, they are of course hydrated, covered with sunscreen, and even cooled with ice bags. Let’s think of the goalkeepers as well, who must have a really tough time. Fortunately, in the meantime special measures have been taken so that no one suffers too much. Rushing next to the players, the referees who are there for the whole game are even more admirable. Wearing a camelback may become compulsory for them. Concerning the ball boys, they could be sprayed with water during halftime to avoid them fainting.

The fans seated in full sunlight in the stands will have one more reason to wear hats and other headgear with the colours of their country. It will be a preventative measure and a show of patriotism. Moreover it will bring an extra touch of colour to the stands! For those who are worried about the people staying in the very high glazed booths around the pitch, well these places are equipped with an air-cooling system so it is nice and cool there. Sadly, you cannot buy a ticket to sit up there!

The stamina award goes most notably to the actors who surely don’t play a crucial sports role but nevertheless are very present on the pitch: the mobile cameraman who has to live with the heat and the weight of the camera and Sparky under his thick fur. (Sun)hats off to them !

For several years now, Belgian hockey has been growing impressively, with almost 43% of members joining in the last five years. This is due to the international sports results achieved both by our young and senior national teams as well as the results achieved by the different clubs. However the tradition of hockey was already well rooted in the country early last century. The Royal Belgian Association of Hockey is effectively one of the oldest sports federations of Belgium and Belgium is, in turn, one of the six European founding members of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The participation, and above all the results, of the Lions and the Panthers at the last Olympic Games in London further increased the popularity of the sport, which continues to develop in all corners of the country. Hockey is also increasingly getting better with more modern infrastructure. And as for the Belgian supporters, they are almost unanimously considered as the best in the world!

the tournament for both men and

women. They will also decide who

is the rising star of the competition

amongst players aged 20 or

younger on 1 January 2015. Those

chosen will be announced after the

finals on Saturday for the women

and on Sunday for the men.

• Yesterday the women’s team from

the Netherlands celebrated their

goals in a remarkable way : they

made a rowing boat. The reason

why is simple, because between

every goal and the resumption of

the game there are 40 seconds.

The FIH asked the players to fill

this time in a festive manner. And

so they did!

Des Belges à la FIH

Notre pays fut, en 1924, l’un des membres

fondateurs de la Fédération Internationale,

aux côtés de sept autres nations. Une

implication qui a permis à nos

représentants de, tout naturellement,

occuper souvent des postes importants

au sein de la FIH qui avait installé, à

l’origine - rappelons-le - son siège à

Bruxelles. Le plus célèbre d’entre eux

est certainement René Franck, qui

siégea comme secrétaire général de

1950 à 1966 et, ensuite, comme

président de 1966 à 1983. Un trophée

porte d’ailleurs son nom depuis 1984, le

« Trophée du Fair Play René Frank ». Il

récompense , tous les deux ans, l’équipe

ou la personnalité qui a fait preuve du plus

de sportivité durant une période de deux

à quatre ans.

Mais de nombreux autres Belges ont

également eu l’honneur d’occuper des

places importantes dans l’organigramme

de différents comités. Robert Lycke

en fut le Trésorier général tandis que

Maurice Fraikin, Michel de Saedeleer,

Dominique Aché ou Claire Monseu-

Peeters occupèrent des fonctions

officielles dans diverses commissions.

Une histoire commune harmonieuse qui

a permis d’instaurer une belle relation de

confiance entre la FIH et notre pays.

What else? Lors du « Hockey

Revolution Congress », organisé à

Marrakech, en novembre dernier, le

Président de l’ARBH, Marc Coudron, a

été réélu comme membre de l’Executive

Board de la FIH.

Story of the dayLes bronzés font du hockey La grande surprise de ce tournoi est incontestablement la canicule! Si le temps constitue une des préoccupations majeures de tout organisateur d’un événement de plein air en Belgique, c’est d’habitude par peur de voir son programme tomber littéralement à l’eau. Ces jours-ci, au contraire, l’eau commence à manquer. Le point sur les zones à risque…

Particulièrement exposés au soleil, les joueurs et joueuses sont en première ligne pour souffrir de la chaleur. Entourés par un staff compétent, ils sont bien entendu abreuvés, hydratés, crémés et même rafraîchis en suffisance à l’aide de poches à glace ! Ayons une pensée spéciale pour les gardiens et gardiennes, dont on peut imaginer le calvaire. Heureusement des mesures spéciales ont été prises, afin que personne ne souffre trop. Galopant près d’eux, les arbitres qui, eux, sont alignés pour un match complet, sont encore plus admirables. Le port d’un sac-à-dos avec gourde intégrée pourrait être indiqué... Quant aux ramasseurs de balle, ils pourront profiter de temps en temps de l’arrosage du terrain, question d’éviter qu’ils ne s’évanouissent...

Plus haut, dans les tribunes, les supporters assis en plein soleil auront une raison de plus de porter des casquettes et autres couvre-chefs aux couleurs de leur pays pour se protéger. C’est une preuve de prudence et de patriotisme, qui apporte en même temps une touche colorée supplémentaire ! Pour ceux qui se préoccuperaient des occupants des conteneurs vitrés perchés en haut de la tour au bord du terrain, sachez que l’endroit est équipé de climatisation et donc très agréable. .. Non, il n’est pas possible d’y réserver des places pour voir le match !

La palme de l’endurance revient très certainement à des acteurs qui ne jouent certes pas un rôle sportif prépondérant, mais sont très présents sur le terrain aussi : le caméraman ‘mobile’ qui assume ét la chaleur ét le poids de la caméra, ainsi que Sparky, sous sa fourrure épaisse… Chapeau (de soleil) !

Depuis plusieurs années, le hockey belge connaît une croissance impressionnante avec près de 43% de nouveaux membres en cinq ans. Et les résultats sportifs internationaux affichés tant par les clubs que par les équipes nationales jeunes et séniors ne sont certainement pas étrangers à ce véritable phénomène. Mais la tradition du hockey est déjà ancrée depuis le début du siècle dernier dans le pays. L’Association Royale Belge de Hockey est, en effet, l’une des plus anciennes fédérations sportives du plat pays et la Belgique est l’un des six états européens fondateurs de la Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH). La participation mais surtout les résultats des Red Lions et des Red Panthers aux derniers JO de Londres n’ont fait qu’accentuer encore un peu plus l’engouement populaire autour d’une discipline qui poursuit son développement aux quatre coins du pays et qui se sent de plus en plus à l’étroit dans ses infrastructures actuelles. Et que dire alors des supporters belges qui sont considérés, de manière quasi unanime, comme les meilleurs au monde !

• Des journalistes spécialisés

sélectionnés par la FIH sont

actuellement en train d’élire le

joueur et la joueuse de cette Hockey

World League, ainsi que le gardien/la

gardienne du tournoi. Par ailleurs, ils

détermineront qui est le/la meilleur(e)

parmi les jeunes joueurs et joueuses

(âgés de 20 ans ou moins le 1er

janvier 2015). Les élus seront

annoncés après les finales, samedi

pour les Dames et, dimanche pour les

Messieurs.

• Hier les dames néerlandaises ont

célébré leurs buts d’une façon

particulière en imitant des rameuses

dans un canot. La raison est très

simple: entre chaque but et la reprise

du jeu le temps est arrêté pendant

40 secondes. La FIH a demandé de

remplir ce temps d’une manière

festive et c’est ce qu’elles ont fait !

Belgen in de FIH

In 1924 is ons land een van de zeven stichtende leden van de internationale federatie. Omdat België van bij het begin deel uitmaakt van de FIH, zijn onze vertegenwoordigers spontaan vaak belangrijke posten gaan bekleden binnen de federatie, die aanvankelijk trouwens in Brussel gevestigd is. De bekendste Belgische vertegenwoordiger is ongetwijfeld René Franck, die tussen 1950 en 1966 fungeert als secretaris-generaal. Daarna schopt hij het tot voorzitter, een functie die hij uitoefent van 1966 tot 1983. Sinds 1984 is er trouwens een trofee naar hem vernoemd, de ‘Trofee van de Fair Play René Frank’. Deze trofee wordt om de twee jaar uitgereikt aan het team of het individu dat zich de voorbije twee tot vier jaar van zijn sportiefste kant heeft laten zien.

Maar René Franck is niet de enige Belg die een belangrijke plaats bekleedt in het organigram van diverse comités. Robert Lycke is algemeen penningmeester en Maurice Fraikin, Michel de Saedeleer, Dominique Aché en Claire Monseu-Peeters oefenen officiële functies uit in diverse commissies. Een feilloze samenwerking die geleid heeft tot een mooie vertrouwensband tussen de FIH en ons land.

What else? Tijdens het Hockey Revolution Congress in Marrakech in november van vorig jaar werd de voorzitter van de KBHB, Marc Coudron, opnieuw verkozen tot lid van de Executive Board van de FIH !

Story of the dayCool blijven is de boodschap


De grote verrassing van het toernooi is ongetwijfeld de hitte! Organisatoren van openluchtevenementen in België vrezen meestal dat hun evenement misschien wel letterlijk in het water zou kunnen vallen. Deze dagen is het echter juist water dat men het hardst nodig heeft. Waar is dit het meest voelbaar?

Natuurlijk zijn het op de eerste plaats de aan de zon blootgestelde spelers en speelsters die veel onder de hitte lijden. Omringd door de goede zorgen van een bekwame staff, worden ze voortdurend gekoeld, gehydrateerd, ingesmeerd en zelfs met icepacks verfrist!Laten we ook de keepers en keepsters niet vergeten: hun lijdensweg is nauwelijks te vatten!Inmiddels zijn er gelukkig al extra maatregelen genomen, zodat niemand teveel moet afzien.Naast de spelers en speelsters, leggen de scheidsrechters ook ettelijke kilometers af op het veld. Bewonderenswaardig, als je weet dat ze een volledige wedstrijd fluiten. Het dragen van een rugzak met geïntegreerde waterzak is misschien wel aangewezen... En de jonge ballenrapers, die kunnen af en toe eventjes genieten van de sproeiers om niet weg te smelten…

Hoger in de tribune vinden we de supporters die de wedstrijd in volle zon volgen. Zij hebben met de warmte nog een reden meer om een pet of een ander hoofddeksel in de kleuren van hun land te dragen. Dit is zowel een vorm van voorzichtigheid als een teken van vaderlandsliefde en brengt tegelijkertijd wat meer kleur in het stadion! Wie zich zorgen maakt om de inzittenden van de containers boven op de toren aan de rand van het veld, kan gerust zijn: er is daar airco en het is er aangenaam vertoeven… Spijtig genoeg is het niet mogelijk om daar plaatsen te reserveren voor de wedstrijd!

De prijs voor de uithouding gaat zeker naar de figuranten, die weliswaar niet de sportieve hoofdrol spelen, maar ook zeer aanwezig zijn op het veld: de ‘mobiele’ cameraman, die én de warmte én het gewicht van de camera moet (ver)dragen, en - niet te vergeten - Sparky met zijn dikke vacht… Voor die 2 doen we ons (zonne)hoedje af!

Het Belgische hockey zit al jaren in de lift. Zo steeg het aantal clubleden de voorbije vijf jaar met 43%. Uiteraard is dat uitzonderlijke cijfer te danken aan de internationale topprestaties van de individuele clubs en van de nationale ploegen bij de jongeren en senioren. Toch maakt hockey al sinds het begin van de vorige eeuw deel uit van de Belgische sporttraditie. De Koninklijke Belgische Hockeybond is trouwens een van de oudste sportfederaties van het Vlakke Land. België was bovendien een van de zes Europese oprichters van de Internationale Hockeyfederatie (FIH). De deelname en vooral de resultaten van de Red Lions en de Red Panthers tijdens de recentste Olympische Spelen in Londen hebben de sport nóg populairder gemaakt dan ze al was. Zo wint het hockey in alle uithoeken van het land terrein en staan er steeds meer moderne infrastructuren ter beschikking. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de Belgische supporters, die zowat overal ter wereld als de beste fans worden beschouwd!

Darling wordt 27 jaar oud vandaag.

Gelukkige verjaardag!

• Gespecialiseerde journalisten,

verkozen door de FIH, zijn

momenteel de speler en de

speelster van het toernooi aan het

kiezen. Ook de beste keep(st)er

en beste jonge speler en speelster

(20 jaar of jonger sinds 1 januari

2015) worden verkozen. De

winnaars zullen na de finale bekend

worden gemaakt, zaterdag voor de

dames, zondag voor de mannen.

• Gisteren vierden de Nederlandse

hockeyvrouwen hun doelpunten

op een opmerkelijke manier: ze

maakten een roeibootje. Dit komt

omdat er 40 seconden zijn tussen

een goal en de herneming van de

wedstrijd. De FIH heeft gevraagd

om deze tijd feestelijk in te vullen.

En dat deden ze ook !
