MV aegean odysseythe MV Aegean Odyssey is a premium

class ship that was rebuilt to cater for cruising in the coastal waters of the

central and southern Mediterranean. Originally a mid-size vessel carrying up to 570 passengers, the new configuration includes generously sized suites, junior suites, staterooms and cabins with and without balconies, which means she now accommodates an average of 350 guests. The vessel provides the best features of a mid-size ship such as passenger space, a choice of restaurants and stability in inclement weather. She also has the personal service and intimate surroundings of a small ship.

Your Suite/Stateroom/Cabin All suites, staterooms and cabins are en suite and feature a bath and/or shower, flat screen TV, safe, hair dryer and are fully air-conditioned. Guests in Balcony Class (categories A to D) will also enjoy: a stateroom or suite with balcony, a welcome bottle of Champagne, a fridge stocked with soft drinks, complimentary bottled water, robe and slippers and Molton Brown bathroom amenities. The sizes, layout and bed configuration will vary within a category. Beds may be fixed double (queen size), fixed separate twin beds or twin beds that can be converted into a double bed. All outside staterooms and cabins have windows except Category J most of which have portholes.

Your Space On board you will find two restaurants; the Marco Polo Restaurant on the Marco Polo Deck and the Terrace Café on the Promenade Deck which has a beautiful outdoor seating area so passengers can enjoy dining al fresco in warm weather. There are four bars on board and

three lounges so there will always be space for relaxation and quiet when desired, as well as ample room for socialising with new found friends. There is also a lecture theatre, a library, shop and internet centre. The on-board library features an extensive range of volumes covering classical history, literature, art, architecture and philosophy. To attend to the body as well as the mind, you can relax on the sweeping sun decks and cool off in the outdoor pool. There is also a fully-equipped gym with lockers and showers, sauna, massage and beauty treatment rooms and early morning yoga. The hairdressers and beauty centre are located on the Belvedere Deck adjacent to the reception area.

DiningThe MV Aegean Odyssey offers numerous dining spaces and a varied, sumptuous cuisine. As well as being one of the world’s most historically interesting and naturally beautiful destinations, the Mediterranean is home to an unsurpassed culinary tradition. The gastronomic culture of using the very best fresh local ingredients cooked in a simple but delicious and healthy style is the inspiration for the restaurants aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey.

The most elegant of the ship’s restaurants, the Marco Polo has a casual country-club ambience and Mediterranean inspired food. At lunch, you can choose from a variety of starters, three dishes of the day and a choice of desserts, fruit and cheese. In the evening, dinner will include appetisers, soup, salads, a choice of three or four main courses and desserts. The complimentary house wines are carefully sourced from Italy, Spain, France and Greece. There is also a full wine list of alternative vintages available.

With a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, sophisticated interior design and cooking on the open grill, the Terrace Café replicates the charm and ambience of a trattoria. As well as the grill, there is a large buffet. The day starts in the Terrace Café with breakfast where you can enjoy a healthy combination of yogurt, fruit and muesli or indulge in eggs, bacon or an omelette. Every afternoon you will find a selection of freshly-prepared sandwiches, cakes and scones served in the Terrace Café or the Charleston Lounge.

In the evenings, Tapas on the Terrace recreates the informal yet sophisticated atmosphere of a European bistro. Equal care has been given to the selection of included wines served at Tapas on the Terrace; these will be served at your table by our helpful waiting staff. For those passengers enjoying a late night discussing the excitement of the day’s sightseeing, a selection of light snacks freshly prepared by the on board chefs will be available in the Charleston Lounge.

Day 6 Oporto, Portugal. Spend a relaxing morning at sea before a lunchtime arrival in Oporto where you have a choice of afternoon tours. Located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Oporto became a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. A colourful city, Oporto is dotted with Medieval relics, soaring bell towers, extravagant Baroque churches and stately beaux-arts buildings. A guided tour will take you to some of the city’s historical treasures including the Se Cathedral, Balhao Market, the Clerigos Church, and the historic centre is the Ribeira district, a place typified by old shop fronts, village-style plazas and old houses where Roman ruins lurk beneath the foundations. Alternatively, you can head out of the city to visit a famous port wine cellar for a tour and tasting. You will learn all about the production, harvesting and transporting of this unique drink. Of course, the tour ends with a tasting and the chance to purchase some bottles if you wish.

Day 7 Vigo/Santiago de Compostela, Spain. After breakfast, travel by road to Santiago de Compostela. It is believed by the faithful that Santiago Apostol (St James the Apostle) preached in

IberIa, FranCe & engLandA voyage from Seville to Dover aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey 11th to 25th June 2016

From the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba and the immense statue of Christ the King in Lisbon to the pilgrimage

site of Santiago de Compostela, this voyage highlights the central role played by Christianity in the history of Europe. Along the way, the MV Aegean Odyssey will cruise the River Guadalquivir from Seville, the River Gironde to Bordeaux and follow the wonderful West Country coastline of England. These destinations also offer two very contrasting gastronomic experiences: wine tasting at a Bordeaux chateau and indulging in a cream tea in Cornwall. Recent history also plays a part as we will visit the D-Day invasion beaches on the Normandy coast of northern France and Winston Churchill’s country house Chartwell in the county of Kent in England.

Dr Angela Smith, Art Historian, NADFAS accredited speakerAngela Smith is a freelance art historian and has been an accredited NADFAS lecturer for a number of years. She studied Art History at Leicester University and holds a PhD in cultural history from the Warburg Institute, London University. Iberian art and architecture

of all periods is a particular interest and one of the lectures she will be giving on the Seville to Dover cruise in 2016 will feature the history and use of azulejo - the ceramic tiles widely found decorating Spanish and Portuguese buildings. Her particular expertise in Spanish art and all things medieval will come together in her lecture on the great pilgrimage church at Santiago de Compostela.

Patricia Stefanowicz, Master of WineAfter graduating in architecture and engineering with first-class Honours from Rice University in the States and a career in design and construction, Canadian-born Patricia became passionate about wine when asked to convert an old hop kiln into a winery. She is an award-winning wine educator and lecturer, international

competition judge, journalist and technical consultant on all things vinous and will be holding wine-tasting sessions throughout this cruise.

Day 1 Seville, Spain. Fly by scheduled flight and transfer to your hotel for a two night stay.

Day 2 Seville/Cordoba. After breakfast, leave Seville by road for Cordoba which over the course of its history has been both a capital of a Roman province and capital of the Arab state of Al-Andalus. A great cultural reference point in Europe, this ancient city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a mixture of wonderful buildings, monuments and artefacts. We will visit the most famous and inspiring monuments of the city, including the Roman Bridge and the

famous Great Mosque, a building that was considered a wonder of the Medieval world by both Muslims and Christians. When Cordoba was re-conquered from the Moors in 1236 by King Ferdinand III of Castile, the mosque became a Catholic church. Another highlight is the old Jewish Quarter. You will have the opportunity to visit the ancient market, now transformed into an artisan market, and walk through the well known “Calle de las Flores” or “street of flowers”. Before heading to lunch, there will be some time at leisure to explore the city independently. Return to Seville and overnight at hotel.

the ItInerary

Day 3 Seville/River Cruising. This morning will be spent exploring the beautiful and romantic city of Seville. Your tour will provide a flavour of this intoxicating place. Admire the exterior of the spectacular fifteenth-century Cathedral of Seville which is the third largest in Europe and one of the last built in the Gothic style. It stands on the site of the great 12th-century Almohad mosque, with the mosque’s minaret (the Giralda) still towering beside it. It has been said that if heaven does exist then it probably looks like Seville’s Royal Palace Alcazar. A building existed on this site as early as 913 but the main construction was carried out in the early fourteenth century with the sublime Mudejar Palacio de Don Pedro being completed in 1366. Finally, enjoy a stroll through the Old Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz with its labyrinth of narrow streets and lovely Moorish courtyards. We continue to the MV Aegean Odyssey and embark. Enjoy lunch onboard and spend a lazy afternoon cruising down the Guadalquivir River en route to the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 4 At Sea. Relax as we cruise to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

Day 5 Lisbon, Portugal. Arrive in the early morning. There has been a settlement on the site of Lisbon since Neolithic times and the city has played a central role in European history since Roman times. This rich past will become evident on your morning’s tour of the city that includes Alfama – the oldest quarter of Lisbon – the monumental statue of Christ the King, and the Monastery of Jeronimos with its intricate late Gothic architecture. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Galicia and that, after his death in the Holy Land, his remains were brought back here. A church was built over his remains in the 11th century and ever since this has been a place of pilgrimage. The cathedral here is the final destination for thousands of Christian pilgrims who walk the “Way of St James” and your tour of this magnificent building includes the crypt where St James is believed to be buried. You will also visit the cathedral’s museum and the Medieval town.

Day 8 At Sea. Relax onboard as we sail north to the French port of Bordeaux.

Day 9 River Cruising/Bordeaux, France. The MV Aegean Odyssey sails up the River Gironde during the morning to berth in the heart of Bordeaux. The magnificent 18th century architecture of the city has led many people to describe Bordeaux as having the most beautiful streets in France. We will visit the highlights of the city including the Palais Rohan and the 13th-century Cathedral of St Andrew where Eleanor of Aquitane was married to Louis VII. Moor overnight.

Day 10 Bordeaux. The Bordeaux region of France, centred on the city of Bordeaux, covers the whole area of the Gironde department, with a total vineyard area of over 120,000 hectares, making it the largest wine growing area in France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. Today, venture out of the city to one of the prestigious wine estates for a tour of the cellars and a tasting. Return to the ship for an evening departure for Falmouth, England.

Day 11 At Sea. Time to relax and reflect on your journey so far as the ship cruises to the west coast of England.

Day 12 Falmouth, England. Early morning arrival at Falmouth. With its lush green countryside, towering hedgerows, splendid gardens and famous cream teas, the West Country of England is a charming and gentle place. The dramatic coastline of Devon and Cornwall is also steeped in history from the founding of the Royal Navy to the D-Day landings. From the Cornish port of Falmouth you will drive through the peaceful countryside of small villages, granite farmhouses and hedged fields to the world famous Eden Project. Built in 2001, Eden is the world’s largest global garden housed under an enormous glass dome and containing flora from around the globe.

Day 13 Dartmouth, England. Along the coast from Falmouth is the Devonian fishing port of Dartmouth, which is home to Britannia Royal Naval College. Dartmouth was of strategic importance as a deep-water port for sailing vessels. The port was used as the sailing point for the Crusades of 1147 and 1190, and Dartmouth was a home of the Royal Navy since the reign of Edward III. The port was twice surprised and sacked during the Hundred Years’ War, after which the mouth of the estuary was closed every night with a great chain. The narrow mouth of the Dart is protected by two fortified castles, Kingswear Castle and Dartmouth Castle, which has been described as one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. You will also visit Slapton Sands, site of a tragic training incident during the build up to the D-Day landings.

Day 14 Honfleur, France. On the 6th June 1944, the largest invasion force ever mustered landed on the coast of Normandy where we will arrive at breakfast time. Our visit offers the memorable opportunity to be expertly guided through the events of that day on the landing beaches. Later you can choose to visit the excellent Memorial de Caen Museum where the exhibits include the Battle of Normandy film shown in a three screen auditorium or travel to the beautiful town of Bayeux with its William the

Conqueror Centre, home to the world famous tapestry telling the story of the Battle of Hastings.

Day 15 Dover/London. Back across the Channel to Dover, where you will be greeted by the White Cliffs. Disembark this morning for an excursion to Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill’s country house where he relaxed, painted and famously built his brick wall. Continue to London where your journey ends.

the Chateau de Saumur served as a Royal domain under Phillip II in the thirteenth century and as a prison under Napoleon Bonaparte. Then travel on to Amboise which is famous for the Clos Luce manor house where Leonardo da Vinci lived (and ultimately died) at the invitation of King Francis I of France, whose Chateau d’Amboise dominates the town.

Day 6 Chateaux Country. After visiting the Chateau d’Amboise, head for the charming town of Tours with its magnificent 15th century cathedral. Then spend the afternoon at the Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau that was built between 1515 and 1527 and is one of the earliest French Renaissance chateaux. The Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau was constructed on an island in the Indre River and its foundations rise straight out of the water. Return to the ship for an evening departure to La Rochelle.

Day 7 La Rochelle. Arrive in the morning and leave La Rochelle by road for the Cognac region. Cognac, home of the world famous brandy, is a pretty little town located on the banks of the Charente River. It is also home to a 13th-century château where French King François 1st was born and that houses the Otard. Today, Otard remains one of the world’s famous houses of Cognac brandy and during your visit you will discover the secrets of the swan’s neck-shaped alembic still in use to distill cognac brandy. After learning about the oak-cask ageing process and the art of blending, your visit will conclude with a tasting. After your visit, enjoy a traditional French lunch at a restaurant in Cognac and return to La Rochelle for a panoramic visit of the city and its old harbour.

Beginning in Dover, this Western Europe journey takes you across the Channel to the impressive sites of the

D-Day beaches in Normandy, the unique fortified abbey of Mont Saint-Michel and the elegant chateaux of the Loire. There is also the opportunity to learn about the art of winemaking and taste some of the great vintages of Bordeaux. We continue to the pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela in the Spanish province of Galicia, and then off to Portugal for a fitting ending to a delightful journey. In Oporto, visit Porto Cathedral or one of the nearby wine estates, while a two-night hotel stay in Lisbon provides the opportunity to enjoy this captivating city and the idyllic scenery just outside it.

Day 3 St Malo, France. A relaxing morning at sea before arriving at lunchtime for an afternoon at Mont Saint-Michel. With its sharp spires, rocky cliffs rising from the sea and impressive fortifications, Mont Saint-Michel is one of the iconic images of France. At low tide, the surrounding waters recede leaving the islet protruding from the sandy beeches (indeed the Mont is only completely surrounded by the sea every month or two, when the tides are at their highest). Visiting the 11th century abbey and its narrow streets transports the visitor to the Middle Ages. Even.
