In gratitude, Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church amplifies God’s grace, nourishes all creation, reaches out, and builds community. •We are a Reconciling in Christ Congregation. •Bethel CYF Ministries: Bridging generations to model, equip, and encourage a foundation of trust in God’s story.

So that we may have life, and have it abundantly

Last month, I challenged us, as a community, to find a balance be-

tween faith and reality, especially when it comes to our annual budget. Some good discussions have started in light of the questions I posed. I trust these, and more conversations, will continue as we find balance and peace in our call as the body of Christ.

That being said, allow me to take a moment to share some exciting things about who we are as a community, what we do in ministry, and what we have to celebrate as children of God. Stewardship isn’t just about our an-nual budget! Being good stewards of God’s abundance is about sharing our money, time, talents, and stuff – to the glory of God. So, with this in mind, let us explore this thriving community we like to call Bethel Lutheran Church. ♦ Recently a former member was here for a funeral and made a point to

find me after the service to tell me that Bethel feels full of light, hope, and

life – which, he said, was not his experience as he grew up here.

♦ When members of our Synod staff come to visit or are here for meetings,

they are always complimentary about how busy it is in our building. They

mention that some churches are dark and lifeless during the week, but

that is never true at Bethel.

♦ Not a day goes by week after week that something – or many things – are

happening in our building and/or on our property. Our 18+ outside organi-

zations sharing our space depend on us to be here and remain the wel-

coming community we profess.

♦ Our new PreSchool Playgroup ministry is growing in leaps and bounds —

literally and figuratively. On Wednesday mornings you will find 12-20 chil-

dren running, crawling, laughing, and playing in Nazareth Hall with parents

in tow. It is a delight to join this excitement and joy each week.

♦ Nokomis Healthy Seniors continues to offer health and fellowship pro-

grams for the aging population in the area. It is wonderful to share in this

ministry whenever possible.

(From the Pastor - continued from page 1)

DESIGN AND DIGNITY by Danish American architect, Poul Bertelsen.

Poul Bertelsen has written the three-decade story of MSAADA Architects who have designed and helped the comple-tion of more than 750 building projects throughout the world—many in developing countries where our missionaries have lived and served. While designed for medical, educational, and residential use, these structures strive to meet the needs of the native people, incorporate native materials, employ native workers, demand minimal maintenance, and thus preserve the dignity of poor people living in these developing countries.

The author’s style is both historical and anecdotal. He introduces us to fellow architects and leaders, both local and international. Poul Bertelsen’s multi-million–mile journey began in Denmark after his formation in architecture at Aalborg Polytechnic College, leaving a comfortable early career as architect, to serve as a missionary to Nigeria and later to serve in Architecture and Engineering to the E.L.C. in Tanzania. At that point he moved to the U. S. and founded the MSAADA Architects to better serve the building projects by various churches in the developing world . ~Ruth Aaskov

♦ We also share our space and ministry with Bancroft Neighborhood Association, as well as

Casa de Oracion Minnesota, Casa de Oracion Pentecostal, and Rehoboth Ethiopian Fellow-

ship churches.

♦ Let me also mention the various Bethel ministries week in and week out. Amplifying God’s

Grace, Open Gym, Education, Prayer Shawls, Music, Tai Chi, Building Community, Bible

Study, Weddings, Share-a-lunch, Worship, Operation Love, Outreach, Ruth Circle, Leader-

ship, Collaborative/Children and Youth Ministry, Nourishing Creation, Service Projects, etc.

♦ Hopes, dreams, and work toward ministry with people who are deaf and hard of hearing,

storm water management, solar panels, use of our labyrinth, and further engagement with

our community are just a few things that continue to keep us looking ahead to a healthy,

blessed, and abundant future here at Bethel Lutheran Church.

All this is simply to say that Bethel is doing just fine. No, Bethel is doing great, because you

are willing to share your time, talents, and stuff. As we continue to find that balance of faith and reality, we also see how so many are sharing so much to keep this part of the body of Christ alive, well, and moving forward. Thank you for what you do to make our community a shining light, a place of hope, and a place full of life.

With you, for Jesus,

in Bethel’s Library

The 2016 Minnesota Food Share March Campaign is just around the corner.

With the help of Bethel we can once again help to raise enough money and food to provide many meals for Sa-bathani Food Shelf. We can serve God’s call to help those in need.

What to donate? Food shelves need all types of food, paper, personal hygiene and cleaning products. Sabathani especially needs personal hygiene products, like soap, shampoo, tooth paste, etc. Cash Donations: Food shelves can stretch cash donations further because of their access to discount programs. Cash also gives them more flexibility to acquire perishable items like fresh produce, meat & dairy products. Watch for further information during the month of March. When you go to the store please buy some extra items to bring to church in March.

Bethel has been a proud supporter of MN Food Share for over 30 years!

In 2012 American taxpayers paid $110 BILLION to cover damages from crop losses, wildfires, flooding, and storms made extreme by global warming. J. Drake Hamilton, Science Policy Director at Fresh En-ergy, will be our adult forum speaker February 7 and 14 to talk about some clean energy solutions to global warming. This summer she represented Fresh Energy at the Paris Climate Summit and was invited by President Obama to meet with him in the White House. Did You Know…? Did You Know…? Did You Know…? Did You Know…? Twenty months ago, when I started at Bethel as your Interim Music Minister, I had no idea what kind of musi-cians I would be working with and I had no idea how much the music would impact our worship services. Looking back, I guess I had a lot of unknowns. Today at Bethel, we have quite of few musicians participating semi-regularly in our worship—players of the clari-net, French horn, trumpet, trombone, guitar, youngster pianists, bell ringers and singers. These are in addition to our Bethel Choir, JOY Choir, Pick-up Choir and Handbell Choirs and our organist, Paul. With these gifted musi-cians being part of the service, they have injected some energy and life into our worship. Have you ever wondered who the Concordia Brass is and how they got to Bethel? The leader of the group lives across the street from Bethel, and she was looking for a place for her quintet to practice. She called the church of-fice and made the inquiry. Since they didn’t have any budget, we negotiated an agreement that the group would play once quarterly in exchange for using our space and facilities. Concordia Brass consists of two trumpets, a trombone, a Fr. Horn and a tuba. They are a fun group and we are glad to have them. I feel privileged that I have the opportunity to work with many gifted musicians at Bethel. Once in a while, I find myself pleasantly surprised to discover the hidden gems among the congregation. I hope I will continually be sur-prised by my findings. I will keep my eyes open and look for more possibilities within the Bethel community. Please be open with me when I make an approach to you and invite you to do something you might never think of doing. You'll probably surprise yourself! In Christ, Hsu-hui Choir InvitationChoir InvitationChoir InvitationChoir Invitation Please join Bethel Choir in preparing for the Palm Sunday and Easter celebration. This year, Easter is approaching earlier than we expect (March 27). For five rehearsals (begins on Feb. 17,) you will be singing on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Please contact Hsu-hui with any questions you may have regarding the invitation, or just show up on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7:00 PM. Hope to see you in the rehearsal.

Board of Administrators

2016 is proving that it will be a year of growth and excitement for all of us here at Bethel.

You were introduced to a new constitution and bylaws at the congregation meeting in January. It will be brought before you again at the March congregation meeting. Copies are available for you to review.

The nominating committee is busy putting together a slate of candidates for you to vote on at the March congregation meeting. If you are called please pray-fully consider serving in some capacity for which you are asked.

We are moving forward with the creation of rain gardens and water management. We are seeking grants at this time. Come spring you will be asked to help with this project. I am excited to see this happen.

A new stewardship committee has been formed. They will be presenting new and exciting ideas to you. Stay tuned.

The budget will be presented to you in March at the congregation meeting. Revenue from outside sources is a big portion of our income. But it is still up to us, the members, to support Bethel as we can. Thank you for turning in your stewardship cards as the final budget is put together.

Your faithful servant, Anna Olsen

Mission Council

Have you ever considered joining the Mission Council? We have an immediate opening and will have additional open seats in the future. The Mission Council focuses, just as our name indicates, on mission. We work to put the congregation's strategic plan into action, and stay in close communication with other Bethel committees and boards, including welcome/outreach, children/youth/family, stewardship, board of administrators, and worship/music, to ensure that we are all working together to support our broader mission and visions for our congregation. You should consider joining the Mission Council if you're: - Interested in helping Bethel grow and evolve to meet its mission: amplifying God's grace, nourishing all creation, reaching out, and building community. - Oriented toward engaging other congregation and community members in conversations about Bethel's mission and strategies. - Ready to gather exciting new ideas, assess, and implement them. - Looking for an opportunity to share your time and talents. - Available to meet on one Tuesday evening each month. Want to learn more? Reach out to Pastor Brenda, Sarah Berke, or any member of the Mission Council or Nominating Committee.

In peace, Sarah Berke

Wednesday night worship during Lent Sensing the GospelSensing the GospelSensing the GospelSensing the Gospel –––– a study by Luther Professor Matthew Skinner a study by Luther Professor Matthew Skinner a study by Luther Professor Matthew Skinner a study by Luther Professor Matthew Skinner

“Even today, we encounter God and God’s salvation in embodied ways -- in our bodies’ abilities to perceive familiar realities and to interpret new ones. Lent provides opportunities to acknowledge this. The season begins with smelly and greasy ash as a stark liturgical reminder of our flesh’s dusty finitude. It will end with our feet washed in cool water or a bittersweet taste of wine in our mouths as we imagine the horrible sight of a man’s body mangled on a cross. In between, Lent allows us to consider together who we are and how we encounter an incarnate God.

… during Lent, consider a series that invites people to think about Jesus’ ability to make God known in tangible, sensory ways. Explore biblical passages that permit us to reflect on who we are and how we bear witness to the gospel -- not so Lent causes us to denigrate this life, but so we learn to encounter God among us and to know Christ through our bodies.”
