the Nba season is underway, and as always, Utah Jazz forward, Gordon hayward is doing great things for the team. a native of brownsburg, indiana, hayward played for two seasons at butler and was then selected by the Utah Jazz in the first-round pick during the draft in 2010.

when you’re not on the basketball court, what is your favorite thing to do in Utah?i really enjoy the mountains. Growing up my family would go out West to the mountains during spring breaks and vacations, so it reminds me of those times. i’ve been hiking a couple times with my parents since coming to Utah, but my job is so physical that it’s sometimes hard for me to go do more physical activity for fun during the season.

Do you have any pre- or post-game “rituals” you do for good luck?i really don’t. i try to just focus on the game itself and what it is going to take to get a win.

what is your favorite date night?i would probably have to say dinner and a movie.

what are you most looking forward to this NBa season?Just getting out there and playing with our younger group of guys and watching this team grow as the season progresses. We have a strong, young group, and we’re all pretty close with each other, so i am excited to help to lead this team into the future and hopefully make Jazz fans proud.

are you from a tight-knit family?Yes, i am. We’ve been close my whole life. i have a twin sister, and we kind of did everything together growing up. We played every sport you can play, and we would just travel around as a family and go do sports. i’d watch her play and she’d watch me play. We were pretty busy.

How does your family celebrate thanksgiving? We used to go to my grandma’s house. She lived in my neighborhood, and everybody would go over there. We’d watch football, eat, play card games and just spend time as a family. in the Nba though, obviously we’re in-season during that time, so i’m away from home. my family comes out to Utah every other year to spend thanksgiving with me. the years they’re not here, they spend with my sister and her husband, who still live in indianapolis.

where is your favorite go-to place to wind down after a big game?Generally, i just come back to my apartment to relax. i don’t really go out or do much after games. if i do go anywhere, i go to Cheesecake Factory with Jeremy Evans.

Just over two years after opening its doors, the Leonardo has become the spot for world-class traveling museum exhibitions. after a run that included Da vinci – the Genius, mummies of the World, and 101 inventions that Changed the World comes their biggest exhibition yet, Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in ancient times.

in 1947, a bedouin goat herder made an amazing discovery while searching a cave for a wayward goat: ancient manuscripts written in hebrew, Greek, and aramaic. the Dead Sea Scrolls, as they came to be known, are the oldest known copies of the Old testament, dating back over 2000 years. they’ve been called one of the most important archaeological

studies of all time, and the text on those ancient

parchments laid the foundation for Judaism, Christianity and islam.

Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in ancient times features 20 of these

scrolls, displayed ten at a time to limit their exposure to light. Joining the scrolls

is a collection of over 600 artifacts, the largest collection of artifacts from ancient

israel ever assembled. Ossuaries (burial boxes) dating from the 1st Century will be exhibited,

while coins, shoes, combs, even make-up containers will give visitors a peak into day-to-day

life in ancient hebrew settlements.

the exhibition also displays a three-ton stone from Jerusalem’s Western Wall. visitors can leave a prayer/wish on the stone, which will then be sent to the actual wall in Jerusalem to be blessed by the rabbi of the Wall.

the Exhibition will visit ten cities during its three-year tour of the United States. the Leonardo is its only stop in the intermountain West, and the museum is making sure that the experience in Salt Lake is a unique one. brighamYoung University has played a key role in the study of the scrolls, and several of their noteworthy scholars will be speaking as part of the Leonardo’s free lecture series, including Donald W. Parry, author of over fifteen volumes about the Dead Sea Scrolls and part of the international translation team that has been studying the Scrolls over the years. Other speakers include Lawrence Shiffman of Yeshiva University,

the Leonardo will be transformed during the run of the exhibition, but its core values of interaction and participation remain. Film screenings, books clubs, family activities, performances, and other events will be centered

around a monthly theme. themes include Sacred

rites and Celebrations, Understanding the Past through

Asian StarI nstantly i am taken back in time to my childhood as i

walk into asian Star. maybe this isn’t true for everyone, but i grew up on americanized Chinese food. You

know, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour pork, and unlimited fortune cookies. We used to frequent a little place called the Chinese Kitchen, you may have your own memorable place, where the menu included pictures and you were greeted at the entry way with a big fish tank (i’m still unsure why so many Chinese restaurants have fish tanks). asian Star is a modern, upgraded version of my childhood asian food experiences. they serve americanized Chinese food along with a few Japanese and thai specials. Upon meeting the owner, Gary Lee, he explained to us how the many Chinese families who started restaurants in america quickly adapted them to best please the american pallet. adding more sweetness and often ginger helps to adapt the dishes for americans, he added. if you’re familiar with Chinese food you know that it varies widely around the different regions of China. there are four main regions of Chinese food : Szechuan, hunan, mandarin and Cantonese. the one we are most familiar with, here in america, is Cantonese because the people of that region were some of the first to migrate to america during the building of the railroads. So, like most other american-style Chinese restaurants, asian Star serves up mainly Cantonese style Chinese food.

many of the dishes on the menu at asian Star will be familiar. We tried the Chicken Lettuce Wraps, mongolian beef with broccoli, Walnut Shrimp, and Sweet and Sour Pork. the Lettuce Wraps were served in cabbage leaves filled with chopped chicken, water chestnuts, green onions, and a sweet hoisin sauce on the side. asian Star’s mongolian beef is hunan Sirloin beef and served with generous amounts of black pepper sauce. the shrimp in the Walnut Shrimp dish are fried and accompanied by a sweet, creamy sauce then topped with crunchy walnuts. the Sweet and Sour Pork was served over fried wonton strips and had a few hot peppers mixed in with the pork. Each dish tasted unique, yet had a similar plating style with lettuce, flowers and orange wedges bringing an ornate element to the food. Not only is the food crowd-pleasing at asian Star, the design of the restaurant is as well. Sit at the sushi bar, or have a hot bowl of soup on their deck overlooking the beautiful Wasatch mountains. if you are looking for a spot to host a party, they do that too. having a private banquet room that accommodates 50-90 people is available. Just imagine the number of dishes you could sample and share if you came with a big group of friends! Chinese food is always best in larger groups, in my opinion. We ended our meal with a reading of our fortunes, a few crunchy bites of cookies and a quick glance at the quintessential fish tank. Gary waved us goodbye and we were on our way; our stomachs satisfied and a familiar childhood memory restored.

Every year it seems like black Friday gets bigger, but does it actually get better? Salt Lake City definitely has the answer. Whether you dig events at the local malls, small businesses, or art galleries, the scene is swinging on November 29 and 30. and for the dedicated holiday aficionados, why wait until thanksgiving? Pre-black Friday events are also on the books.

back to black with black Friday

Pre–black FridayStart practicing for black Friday on November 23. Gardner village, Salt Lake’s favorite niche shopping village, offers midnight madness from 6 p.m. until midnight. beat the cold with warm food from the eateries and shop their bargain holiday bash. the Gateway also starts their holiday festivities early with their annual Light Up the Night event starting at 3 p.m. Or, if you prefer a method other than shopping to burn calories, participate in the Santa run. Nicknamed the “Jolliest 5K in Utah,” the Santa run takes place Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. Participants are each provided with a full Santa costume, and the run takes place in the streets around the Gateway.

back to black FridayNow that you are prepped for the big day, shake off the thanksgiving Day stupor with insta-Energy black Friday at the Gateway where doors will open at midnight thursday night. Or, early Friday morning, get a taste of contemporary style at the Urban arts Gallery (also at Gateway), which will be celebrating by kicking off a show called LOSt | LUCiD | DrEamS featuring over 40 artists. the gallery will be opening their doors on both the show and their quirky boutique at 7 a.m. the boutique is definitely worth a visit to explore items crafted locally by your favorite artists, not to mention the door prize giveaway during the day. also, take advantage of Gateway’s free parking on Friday until 11 a.m.

Utah’s Local First even has a “Shift Your Spending” campaign encouraging shoppers to shift 10% of their holiday dollars to locally made goods and services. and if, after all of that, you have the energy left to shop online, we doff our caps to you. You are the shopping elf of black Friday.Facebook.com/shopsmall

Erin’s Night IN Recap

hundreds of women waited outside of the University Park marriott hotel in Salt Lake City for a chance to be a part of the first Erin’s Night iN on October 19, 2013.

Once inside, women from all walks of life enjoyed a chocolate fountain sponsored by Gatehouse for dipping fruits, cinnamon bears and graham crackers.

Over 60 service and vendor groups participated in Erin’s Night iN. they offered goods and services from perfumes, bags and jewelry to clothes, beauty products and trinkets galore. there was also an entire room dedicated to personal services such as tarot readers, complimentary waxing, facials and massage.

a pin-up fashion show took the stage each hour at Erin’s Night iN. attendee’s enjoyed beautiful fashions by bettie Page and exquisite hair and make- up compliments of vivian Johnson and Cameo College of Essential beauty. a viP section offered cocktails, a full menu and casual seating away from the crowd.

Erin’s Night iN was held in part to support Steve bailey who suffers from alpha-1 antitrypsin Deficiency, a severe lung disease.

Erin’s Night iN would like thank their sponsors Strong vW, bettie Page, Stars talent Studio and Gatehouse.

to be a part of Erin’s Night iN for 2014, please contact Kathleen beckmann at 801-204-6368 or [email protected]. Or Fara Stiehl at 801-204-6278 or [email protected].

Whether you have an unquenchable rockstar fantasy, or you’re just looking to avoid that awkward moment when you realize it’s the one night a week the bar you’re in gives the mic out to ANYONE, please use the below guide as a reference.

SundayThe Woodshed • 800 S. 60 E. aptly named, “Karaoke that Doesn’t Suck,” this dive bar to the extreme has some of the finest Karaoke in Salt Lake. it’s generally slow enough you can sing a few times a round. Enjoy the giant dance floor in front of the stage and for those watching their spending, th drinks are inexpensive but tasty!

MondayPoplar • 242 S. 200 W.if you want an audience free karaoke experience get to poplar at 9 p.m. sharp. most people will be on the patio or at the bar, so you and your friends can casually shout out whatever songs you want until people start filling the seats. Poplar is the perfect place if you want sit down with a plate of yummy food and good beer.

Tuesday Tavernacle Social Club • 201 E. 300 S. if you’ve always wanted to see what the hubbub about the tavernacle is, but haven’t found the time, try making a stop at one of it’s three karaoke nights. You and your friends will be belting “Dancing Queen” before the night is through. as an alternative to regular karaoke nights, monday and tuesdays are bingo Karaoke where you have the chance to score prizes.

WednesdayJam • 751 N. 300 W. Jam’s Karaoke nights are not the shirtless bartender hoopla that it is on the weekends. but nowhere else will

you hear as many mariah Carey ballads or madonna dance hits. Dance room is limited, but don’t let that stop you. Go get your groove on!

ThursdayBourbon House • 19 E. 200 S. SLocated inside the Walker Center and a flight down-stairs, this place is always a good scene to walk into. though it’s usually more full of young, attractive hipsters than true whiskey connoisseurs. the stage is legit enough to make you feel like a real professional even for the most off key. Don’t forget to ask for a “Pickle back”.

FridayCheers to You • 315 S. Main St. the absence of a stage in this bar can make for a different karaoke experience. the mic is set-up in the passageway between the bar and the pool table area, which often causes people to pass by you while you sing. there’s always a slew of good people to sing to though and most of the time a good song is being cued.

SaturdayThe Highlander • 6194 S. Highland Dr. there aren’t many venues that want to sacrifice the Sat-urday night rush for their karaoke night, but luckily the highlander is a seven days a week karaoke club. they know what they’re doing and come complete with a full menu and bar. if you’re looking for a more obscure song the highlander likely has it.
