Welcome to Edition 19 of #DITTO

Hi there, I’m Alan Mackenzie.

I’m an independent consultant specialising in online safety, specifically within education to children, young people, schools and other organizations, and parents.

I ’m a strong believer that technology, for the most part, is neutral; behaviour is the most important aspect.

To understand behaviour, we have to be a part of children's lives in order to understand what they’re doing with technology and why.

We have to be curious and guide them to realise the wonderful opportunities that the online world gives to all of us, and be there to support them when they need it.

It feels like I only wrote the last DITTO a few days ago. I think as I get older the time seems to go quicker, which is something I really don’t want, but more importantly I’m definitely getting grumpier; don’t let that smile in the corner of the page fool you!

Speaking of which, my opinion piece this month is about YouTube and how they’ve banned the content from my favourite YouTube channel. It isn’t just about YouTube, it’s directed against all these tech companies regarding some of the decisions which make little sense.

I know the services these companies deliver will have millions, sometimes billions of users and decisions will be really difficult, but I don’t have the slightest ounce of sympathy. These services are built and delivered to make money and everything else comes secondary as far as I’m concerned, despite their arguments to the contrary.

In this edition I briefly explain a phenomenon called Game Transfer Phenomenon (GTP). It’s a fascinating area and I can’t do it justice in this magazine so take a look at the website if you would like to learn a little more.

But my frustraAons with YouTube are moreself-centred, the latest one being thatYouTube has decided to ban the content ofoneofmymost-usedchannels.

It must be preOy serious if YouTube havebanned the content? Well that depends onyouropinion.

If youhavebeen readingDITTO for awhile youmayrememberthatIstarteddrawingacoupleofyears ago. It’s a hobby, somethingdifferent andverychallenging. Iuseda number of amazingYouTube channels tolearndifferentskillsandv e r y q u i c k l y m ydrawings went from‘trulyawful’to‘nottooshabby’.

I knowthatmany of them areusingthesechannelstoselltheironlinecoursesand I’mokaywith that,it allowsme to see if Ilike the way they doth ings and I havepurchased a couple ofcoursesasaresult.

AboutayearagoIwantedadifferentchallenge-figure drawing. The human figure, nude. Thecomplexityof thehumanbody is incredibleandwhen you consider shapes, light and shadow tocreate something which is 2D to look 3D it’sreallychallenging.

But I don’t live near a city like London wherethereare lotsof lifedrawingclassesallovertheplace,soIhavetouseonlineresourcesandunAlrecentlythatresourcewasYouTube.Thechannelwasn’tmoneAsed through ads, it relied on verysmalldonaAons fromsubscribers tohiremodelsetc. and it has been going for years, unAlrecently.

Because the videos contain arAsAc nudity, thechannelcontenthasbeenbanned,yetthereisnomorenuditythanyouwouldseeinanymuseum

around theworldand Icannot put across inw r i A n g t h e s h e e rfrustraAon I feel as I’msuremanyothersofthesubscribers feel, not tomenAon the owners ofthechannel.

The pointI ’m making is thatYouTube and manyothers at Silicon Valleyseemtobemaking therules up as they goalong. It’s okay to seevideos of people being

beheadedandotheratrociAesbecausethat’s ‘inthepublicinterest’.

And don’t get me started on children able toview this type of content; every Ame it’s thesomeoldexcusefromthesecompanies,‘They’renot supposed to be on there.’ Irrelevant andunhelpful.

ThelikesofYoutubeandothersarealwaysunderinvesAgaAonbyonegovernmentoranotherandreports coming out of America suggest thatYouTube are considering major changes to itsrecommendaAonalgorithmamidaninvesAgaAonby the Federal Trade Commission into how ithandlesvideosaimedatchildren.Althoughthereare no concrete facts, the reports state thatYouTube is considering moving all content for

children to the YouTube Kids app. Quite howthiswillbeachievedIhavenoidea,butwhatIdo know is that it won’t make the slightestdifferencewhatsoever.

Thishasbeengoingonforsomanyyearsnowit ’s beyond a joke. Surely the mosttechnologicallybrilliantbrainsintheworldcancomeupwith somethingbeOer thanwehavenow?Surely they canputproper, realisAcageverificaAoninplace,useoneplaXormandthenfilter by age? Would it really cost so muchmoneytoputproperparentalcontrolsinplacerather than the patheAcally weak RestrictedModethatwecurrentlyhave?

Am Iover simplifying this?Perhapsbut surelythisiswithintherealmsofpossibility?

In one way or another I have worked intechnologysince1984andIloveit,butasIgetolder (and definitely grumpier) I worry abouthow these techies from Silicon Valley areshapingourlives,parAcularlyyoungergeneraAons,andthespeedatwhichit’shappening.

YoumaybewonderinghowYouTube (andall theothers) get awaywith all of this; the appallingtoxic content and the lack of punishment for some of the so-called influencers? The answer issimple:theseplaXormsare‘hosAng’thecontent,not‘publishing’thecontent.ThiscomesunderUSlaw, SecAon 230 of the CommunicaAons Decency Act of 1996 to be precise, which states “NoprovideroruserofaninteracAvecomputerserviceshallbetreatedasthepublisherorspeakerofanyinformaAonbyanotherinformaAoncontentprovider.”

Itwill be interesAng in the coming year to seehow theUKgovernment implements theironlinesafetywhitepaperwhichcomestotheendoftheconsultaAonperiodon1stJuly2019.Accordingtothewhitepaperthesecompanieswillbedirectlyliable.YouTuberecentlystated,“Responsibilityisournumberonepriority,andchiefamongourareasoffocusisprotecAngminorsandfamilies.”

SocialandEmotionalLearningforMutualAwarenessIfyouhavebeenonlineforawhile,particularlyonsocialmedia,there’snodoubtyouwillhaveseenhatein one form or another. Whilst the media tend to report on celebrities and elections, our concern asparentsandprofessionalsisforchildrenandyoungpeople.

Specifically for young people aged 11-16, SELMA is a two-year project co-funded by the EuropeanCommissionwhich aims to tackle the problem of online hate speech by promotingmutual awareness,toleranceandrespectbyempoweringyoungpeopletobecomeagentsofchange.Itwilltakeanevidence-basedapproachtopreventandremediateonlinehatespeechwithactivitieswhichinclude:

EmpiricalResearch,theco-creationofaSELMAtoolkit(https://hackinghate.eu/toolkit/),face-to-faceandonline training and counselling for young people, training and briefings toeducationalstaffandothersincludingaMassiveOnlineLearningCourse(MOOC),Education Task Force meetings and the dissemination of outputs, results andlessonslearned.

HACKING(inthiscontext)isanyamateurinnovationonanexistingsystem,anditisadeeplydemocraticactivity.It’saboutcriticalthinking. It’s about questioning existingwaysofdoingthings.It’stheideathatifyousee a problem, youwork to fix it, and notjustcomplainaboutit.

Empathy?Tolerance?Understandingourfellowhumanbeingstocreateabetter

Soundbites in campaigns to develop better onlinerelationshipsseemobvioustomanyofusbutachievingpositive change is complex. We all bring our ownemotional“baggage”totheseincidents,bethatculture;language;behaviour;beliefsandexperienceswhichhasa dramatic inZluence on the outcome. When we areasked,forexampleto“StanduptoBullying”,it’squiteachallenge and indeed risk, to do so without theappropriate routes and strategies. It can often makethingsworseifnotmanagedwell.

Empathy can take many forms and can be elusive tomany of us. It is based on our ability to connect and

communicatewithothersandformasenseofcommunity;asenseofbelonging.

Those tight community bonds can be very supportive but can also have negative inZluences. Aparticulargroup’s inabilitytorespondpositivelymayverywellbeduetonegativeattachment; thoseresulting “beliefs” may be embedded as part of upbringing; ethics and values. And yet, positiveattachmentisoneoftheunderlyingcomponentsofpositivehumanmentalhealthandwell-being.

Boththeimmediateandatemporalnatureofonlineengagementtoooftendrivesresponsesthatarenotconsideredorthoughtful.Theyareoftenvisceral:unregulatedandemergefromprimitivepartsofourreptilian,triunebrain.Fight;Zlightorfreeze.

Can we ever “park” these inZluences to affect real positive change? Margot Sunderland (Children’sCentreforMentalHealth)aspartofherintervention“TraumaInformedSchools”placesattachmentatthe heart of her work. Empathy is a blend of thought (cognitive), feeling (emotional) and action(compassion) and she describes a set of Vital Relationship Functions that help map a successfulempatheticengagement;movingsomeonefromastateofdysregulationtoaregulated,rationalstate.

• Attunement:addressingtheneedsoftheotherpersonbyunderstandinghowtheytrulyfeel

• Validating:assuringthepersonthatwhattheyarefeelingisvalid/real/hasaname

• Containment:keepingtheengagementphysically/emotionallysafeforbothparties

• Regulation:movingapersonfromthereptilianbraintothethinkingbrain

TheseVitalRelationshipFunctionsareverymuchevidentintheactivitieswehavedevelopedaspartofSELMA.

This unique and innovative approach towhat is a visible and global online issue is a key foundingprinciple of the SELMA Toolkit and sits at the heart of a wider set of focuses that include mediaanalysis;mediaproduction;citizenshipandpeersupport.

socialmedia,shortpostscanbetakencompletelyoutofcontext.

This would be a really interesting discussion athomeor at school.Whilstwe concentrate on ourdigital footprint mainly for safety/safeguardingreasons you can diversify and talk about othersubjects such as this one. The fundamentalprinciples of keeping data safe, private andappropriate are all the same, you’re justapproaching it from a different and, for somestudents,amoreinterestingangle.

Inoneofthestudiestheresultsshowed that15%of thegamersstudiedhadthesensaAonthataPokemonwasphysically present, and another 16%hadfound themselves looking for Pokemon outside thescreenwhileplaying.

Given some of the findings from the research so far,somechildrenmayfind it tobeaconfusingexperienceand a small number may not want to talk about it (ifthey have experienced GTP), so it’s an opportunity to

put them at ease and let them knowthere’s nothing wrong with them andnothingtobeconcernedabout.

If theyhaveexperiencedGTP itmaybeanideatocutdowntheamountofAmethey’re playing as it appears thatintensive and long-duraAon are majorfactorsinGTP.

It seems like everybody is jumping on the BattleRoyale bandwagon just lately.
