Your Edditor thinks these photos are from

the April ride in Kentucky. If you want to

see what the GCBMWC is like, join the

group for breakfast (you were going to eat

anyway), Then go for a ride and see some

of the great scenery and curvy roads in the

area.

Home of Gary & Sue Franklin

3127 Shoemaker Rd

Lebanon, OH 45036

513-934-2272

June 18, 2016

Saturday 6 pm

Shoemaker Road runs off of US Rt. 42, about 5 miles north of Lebanon.

This will be the first time that Gary and Sue have hosted a GCBMWC meeting, so they want to make

sure everyone is comfortable and has a good time.

Gary is a big guy and rides a big GS Adventure. He is a jet pilot, formerly for Airborne Express and

DHL, flying out of the big airfield at Wilmington. Sue is an RN, works at the Lebanon City Schools,

likes to knit, read, and is President of the Lebanon Garden Club. They have 3 grown daughters.

Roast pork loin, baked beans and potato salad will be provided by the hosts. Everyone is asked to

bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share. If you prefer a specific type of caffeine free or diet drink,

bring it yourself. The Franklins will provide water, cheap wine & beer.

We will have a Club business meeting with reports of past events, info on upcoming rallies and

rides. Time will be set aside to induct new members who have met our high standards.

If you have never before attended a Greater Cincinnati BMW Club meeting, this is a fine place to

start. You can’t go wrong with this group. Wear what you like, ride what you like or arrive in a car.

No problems. Bring a dessert and you will be welcomed with open arms.

This is a list of 83 amazing persons

who actually paid dues for 2016.

Thanks to all for joining.

If your name is not on the list, write

a check to GCBMWC and bring it to

the next meeting. We have a new

money.

If you are new, you will have to

meet the high standards for mem-

bership. This includes :

1. Attending at least 2 club events

2. Writing a check to GCBMWC

Georgia mountain Rally

Hiawassee, Georgia

GCBMWC Members Mark Beers, Mark Pillis, Steve Thorner and Ken Norris attended the 2016 Georgia Mountain Rally in Hia-wassee Georgia April 28th thru May 1st. Ken and Marc and riding buddy Jim Lasley rode down on Thursday and Steve and friends came down Friday. The ride started with some light showers on Thursday which dissipated just south of Lexing-ton. Our route took us on the slab to Knoxville where we picked up Route 129 (Alcoa Highway). We stopped for lunch for some excellent pilled pork sandwiches at the Dragon’s Den about 7 miles north of the Tail of The Dragon. We made the run through “The Dragon” and set our sights on our destination, The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.

The Fairgrounds is an outstanding rally location with some great camping and facilities on the shores of Lake Chatuge. Arriv-ing early we grabbed a prime lakeside spot and tried to stake out enough room for Steve and friends arriving the following

day. We were also joined by John Wharton and a couple of his riding buddies Friday afternoon. The weather Friday morning was perfect. We made a quick side trip to the observation deck at Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak where you can see four states and the Atlanta skyline on a clear day. We then rode some of the greatest roads around including the sweepers of Blood Mountain Road and technical switchbacks and curves of Wolfpen Gap Road ending up at TWO in Suches GA. Marc also managed to get his GS dirty riding some fire roads near Suches for a couple of hours. The new owners have im-proved the TWO facilities tremendously making it an excellent desti-nation with some great food.

With the arrival on Steve’s group on Friday afternoon we set out for a second day of riding on Saturday morning after a pancake breakfast. With eight riders in the group we rode many of the excellent roads

we were on the previous day before stopping for lunch at TWO. Around 5pm Saturday thunderstorms made their first ap-pearance as we cooked our steak dinners and listened to a live music in the auditorium. Unfortunately we were not among the winners for any of the grand prizes. A light rain continued thru most of the evening as we turned in early, but we man-aged to break camp Sunday morning with little or no rain. With our bikes loaded we stopped for a second round of pancakes and coffee before heading back on the same route we came down on. We made it through the Dragon a little after 9:00AM before any crowds under sunny skies. All in all, the trip was 1,078 miles of excellent riding in very good weather conditions.

Be advised there is a major construction backup on I-75 North about 25 miles north of Knoxville which I don’t believe is relat-ed to the landslide earlier this year. It held us up for 30-45 minutes. With two bikes running very hot before we made the decision to exit and bypass the construction taking a route over Norris Dam. Keep it in mind for your summer travels, it looks like a long term project.

The GMR is legendary for their Saturday night, grill-your-own steak dinner.

Every steak is “Grilled to Perfection.“ The coals were hot in spite of rain.

Terrible. I thought I was on my way to see a movie about 6

guys riding their BMW motorcycles through the Colorado

mountains, focusing on the ride and scenery. But in fact “A Sto-

ry Worth Living” is about exploring your life and living your

story. The movie has some great Colorado mountain scenery

with excellent camera work shot from drones and multiple Go

Pro-type devices. Stream crossings are dramatically shown

from many angles.

Despite the fact that the riders are shown smoking cigars and

occasionally cussing, Biblical overtones quickly override the

motorcycling theme. In the 115 minute movie, about 45 minutes

are devoted to the adventure ride itself. Lots of attention is

focused on the sponsors’ products, Sena, Klim, Denali, and

Twisted Throttle.

If you want to see a movie about living your life in the way God intended, “A Story Worth Liv-

ing” is for you. If you want a movie about motorcycle adventure in wilderness situations, see

“A Long Way Around” one more time.

The 6 characters seemed to think of themselves as brilliant and insightful, I found them a

bit shallow. I walked out before the film ended because I could not stand any more of their

narcissistic psych-babble.

John Fischer

Is a long time member who loves his motorcy-

cles. The silver bike pictured below was

John’s first BMW, a R1100 RS from 1994. He

has owned 3 BMWs since then, plus 2 KTM

dirt bikes, 2 Honda 650 dirt bikes, and a Ka-

wasaki KLR 650. The best deal was purchas-

ing a $200 Ossa Pioneer. He has no idea

how much money he has spent on his bikes.

John also rides non-powered 2 wheelers and

tries to live a healthy lifestyle.

The Edditor thinks his helmet liner is cute, in a

patriotic kind of way.

Sunday morning, May 22 broke with an unusual sight, sunshine. It has seemed like weeks since we had a sunny morning. How-ever, this is strictly speaking, not true. What is true is that most of the sunny mornings have arrived on work days. So, what to do on such a day? I could cut grass, which is what I have been doing every time it has been dry. I could do something with the wife. She doesn’t like me anyway. It’s a tough call, but eventually I settled on taking a little ride. My friend Ken Norris was available, so at 10am with the sun shining and the temp. about 60 we rode out of the driveway of stately Banklick Manor. Our destination – adventure. Not really, Brooksville, Kentucky. My fellow Kentucky riders know how much fun the roads are in that area. Even some of the Ohio boys might know of Routes 10 and 22. These are legendary ribbons of blacktop that have little traffic, many turns and are well maintained. The first leg was KY Route 17 south to Falmouth. At Falmouth, you link up with KY 22 going east. About 15 miles out, there is a new road to me called 539, you go right. It is narrow and twisty and scenic so you better pay attention. After about 10 miles you come to a stop in a tiny KY town called Milford, don’t blink. But you do have to make a right at the stop onto KY 19. Go through the little town to the other end and turn left back on to 539. It gets really thin here and loses its dividing line, but no gravel or water. You will come to a little dog leg where you can either go straight up a hill or turn right to cross the Licking Riv-er, take the right and you will immediately go left upon crossing the river. Follow this lovely little road over hill and down dale until it dead ends on KY 62. Go right toward Mt. Olivet, the county seat of Robertson County, the smallest populated county in the state with just over 2,000 souls. In about a mile, you will come to a left called KY 165. This road is a hoot. I have been in-formed by reliable sources that speeds in excess of 100 mph are possible on some of the long straights, but would not know this from personal experience. KY 165 is very entertaining, but all good things must end and so does this road. It ends on KY 19 (yes, again). This time, go right and you will end up in Brooksville, KY. Brooksville is the county seat of Bracken County, so in Kentucky, that means it has a courthouse (not sure about Mt. Olivet, never could find theirs). It also means that your journey will be rewarded if you choose to stop at Donna’s Place. A little family run diner across from the old courthouse. 113 Locust Street is the address and you can find other info on the web. Donna’s has all of the goodies you expect at this type of place. You can get a grilled ham and cheese as Mr. Norris ordered. Of course, all kinds of burgers. Killer BLT or if you prefer GLT (Getta). I know no one else is interested in pie, but they did have a half dozen home-made pies on offer. I had the Lemon Meringue and Mr. Norris had the Pecan. Melt in your mouth good. Staff persons are wonderful, make everyone feel like an honored guest and most are related to the founder, Donna. This place is well worth our support. A tip - do try to get there at 11:50 or so on a Sunday as it is the only open restaurant for miles around. Once sated, you have many options to return. Augusta and it’s ferry are just to the north, route 10 beckons as do other fun roads. Enjoy and keep the rubber side down.
