PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hi All,

During the past month I attended a

meeting of the Flathead Ford Clubs

and we are going to have a com-

bined club run called the “Ford

Flathead Festival” at Caribbean Gardens for our Henry

Ford Birthday run on the 26th of July. Further infor-

mation will be included in a later magazine.

The recent Workshop day in Rochester was a lot of fun,

some good work was done and a lot of socialising en-

joyed. Thanks to Ray and Sandy Smith for putting it on.

See elsewhere in the magazine for a report of the day.

Dave Weatherhead's Day at Pakenham A Grade is the

next Club event and I hope a lot of you will be there to

enjoy a similarly fun day.

During the Friday General Meeting, we will have a very

interesting talk by Bernie McKeegan on coils.

The day after this is the efficiency run, a good drive for

the T's.

On the 25th of April is of course 100 years of Anzac and

I'm sure some of you will have a role in the commemora-

tion. Please consider sharing your experiences with the

rest of the Club in the next magazine.

The “Old Grey Mare” is currently laid up with tyre trou-

bles, but I hope to see you all about on the upcoming

club runs.

If you are happy to only receive the colour email copy of

the newsletter, send an email to the Treasurer. The com-

mittee would like to encourage this choice.

As always the committee and I welcome any input or

offers of help. The AGM is only a few months away so if

you wish to join in, have a think about it.

Labour Day Weekend Rally

Back to Glenaroua March 6th - 9th

Before leaving on our drive for Sunday today the men

had to go back to Noel's neighbour, Michael, to get his

T-model tractor going as they couldn't get it started the

night before. Lots of discussion on Saturday night

about what it could be that was the problem, they

weren't going to let it beat them. Turned out there was

a wasps’ nest in the manifold.

When the men returned, triumphant, a while later we

got the day under way. After leaving the Huitt's farm

we went into Seymour to fuel up then drove along the

Goulburn River. There was some nice camping

grounds along the river. We then continued onto

Tahbilk Winery.

On arrival at the Winery where we thought there was a

lunch booking for us, we were told that as we hadn't

book in there were no tables available. After manage-

ment had inquired as to how many were in our group,

miraculously there was a table prepared very quickly

for us. Sure he was counting the dollars to be made.

Lunch time entertainment for the men was a bus load

of young ladies on a hens’ trip from Bendigo. After

having a nice lunch, next was some wine tasting and a

tour of the cellars.

Walking around the Winery grounds we came across a

glass bowled petrol bowser and we parked the six cars

around it for a photo. Noel was the envy of all the fel-

las as he got to take the 'bride to be' and her brides-

maids for a drive in his T.

After leaving the Winery, drove around the northern

perimeter of Puckapunyal back towards Heathcote and

down the McIvor Highway to Tooborac. A light re-

freshment was had at the Tooborac pub. Then made

our way back to the Huitt's farm. We followed Noel

when he went to feed his cows and then we were taken

for a tour around his paddocks which were quite hilly

and provided amazing views of the district around.

We did the farm tour in the T's and there was some

steep descents and some serious hill climbing. The

number of kangaroos on the farms was amazing, out-

numbered stock.


After another enjoyable day there was lots of discussion

regarding weekend and how everyone had liked the way

the rally was not set to a timeline and things could be

changed without affecting the days planned activities.

Well done Dave for organising the portable ensuite for eve-

ryone to use, this was a great idea.

ANNUAL ANZAC DAY RUN

Saturday 25th April 2015

For the last two years I have taken the opportunity

to enjoy a Model T drive with club members some-

where in Gippsland. This year I invite MTFCV club

members to join with me on a leisurely picnic

cruise.

They say a man’s house is his Castle! Come with us

this year to visit one mans dream where he has liter-

ally built his own Castle!

WORKSHOP DAY – ROCHESTER

A very pleasant day was had by all at Ray & Sandy

Smith’s Workshop Day. The weather was perfect for

the ladies present, Christine Dalton, Shirley Wearne,

Marilyn Baker and Sandy Smith, to sit under the gazebo

and catch up on the latest gossip, while the men chatted

and busied themselves in the shed.

In attendance were

Norm Morgan with his T Truck, servicing the

front end;

Richard Wearne with a ute load of diffs and rear

axles looking for serviceable parts to build a usa-

ble diff;

Bob Dalton( non member), who is in the process

of building a T truck;

Bernie McKeegan who brought along a radiator

apron to modify and

Graeme Baker who worked on his 1915 motor

and transmission which needed some tender lov-

ing care following the Albury rally. (Triple gear

bush disintegrated)

Bruce Csorba and Robbie Dalton were overseeing the

operations!!

We were treated to a fantastic BBQ lunch, thanks to

Ray’s son, Corey who manned the BBQ producing

snags, skewers, bacon, onion and a lovely selection of

salads. This was followed by a fruit platter, and an as-

sortment of cakes and slices, tea and coffee. Robbie and

Christine stayed on at the Bakers and along with Ray

and Sandy, headed to the Lockington Pub for dinner.

A great day was had by all, and too bad for those who

didn’t make the trip to paradise!!!!! Big thanks Ray

and Sandy for a super day.

NATIONAL MOTORING HERITAGE DAY – SUNDAY MAY 17TH RUN DETAILS

The National Motoring Heritage Day will again be celebrated at Yarra Glen Racecourse on Sunday 17th May.

MTFCV will join with many other Clubs to help the Association of Motoring Clubs by participating in this event.

It will be fun to travel and arrive together and the following arrangements are in place:

Rendezvous at Dillon’s Motors 7/10 Pilgrim Court, Ringwood, at 8:30am

For a prompt 8:45am departure (Melways Ref 49 D12).

Ample parking for trailers.

The run to Yarra Glen will be about 45 minutes, even at Model T Ford speed! Last year the trip to Yarra Glen at-

tracted the waves and horn blasts from many of the other participants en route to the event, who loves the sight of

our vehicles. It was a gala trip!

more than 2000 cars! It’s a flagship event that shows the community, Governments and business the strength of the

Australian motoring movement.


SCORESBY PICNIC

The Federation of Car Clubs and the Dandenong Val-

ley Historic Car Club Inc are again hosting this event on

SUNDAY 12th APRIL.

We have been fortunate in being allocated an area in the

grounds to be able to park our cars together, and display

the various types as a group. This is interesting to the

people who think all Model T's are the same and all black.

With this year being the 100th anniversary of the Landing

at Gallipoli, the feature display will be Military vehi-

cles. The machinery display sheds will be open for in-

spection of the Steam engine displays and there will be

craft and trade displays as well. Bring the family as chil-

dren's entertainment will be available during the day.

During the course of the day we will be leaving the

grounds for a trip up Wheelers Hill to the Art Gallery at

the top of the Hill. In the carpark we will participate in a

driving skills test and then return to the display area. It

will be a fun and interesting excursion during the day.

Please arrive at the National Steam Centre at 1200

Ferntree Gully Rd Scoresby (Mel 72 D 9 ) at 10.00 A.M.

Bring your own picnic lunch or a light BBQ lunch, tea and

coffee will be available on site. Entry is free. Please try to

come along and support this event.

others but we will be attending and participating in

them as a Club.

Sat 11th April WORKSHOP DAY At Paken-

ham A grade workshops. This is an opportunity to

have your car safety checked, get expert advice on

faults, carry out repairs to cars or parts. Have a chat

and a snag for lunch. Always a great social day.

Sun 12th April SCORESBY PICNIC and Driving

Skills Day. See column on the left.

Sun 17th May NATIONAL MOTORING HERIT-

AGE DAY at Yarra Glen racecourse. Join us for a

pleasant drive from Ringwood to Yarra Glen. We will

travel, arrive and park to-gether. This is a great day

out .

Sat 6th - Mon 8th June OUR ANNUAL QUEEN’S

BIRTHDAY RALLY is well into the planning stages

and will be centred at the Horsham Caravan

park. Daily trips to the surrounding areas with plenty

of visits.

Sun 16th June A CLUB RUN TO HEALES-

VILLE and the Yarra Valley.

Sun 26th July HENRY FORD BIRTHDAY

EVENT. This year will be the first FORD FLAT-

HEAD FESTIVAL. Staged at the Carribean Gardens

in Scoresby, it will be a display day of all side

valve Ford cars from the T and A clubs, the Side valve

V8 club and the Prefect and Anglia club. More info

next moth month.

Nov CUP WEEKEND RALLY. This rally will be

centred from Camp Curumbene and is well into the

planning stages. Keep this weekend free for what is

shaping up to be a well organised event, nice flat roads

and visits.

SUNDAY RUN TO CHARLIE’S MOTOR MUSEUM AT ARTHURS SEAT

Sunday 15th March

As usual after a beautiful sunny Saturday, Sunday started off very cool and windy at Stud Park Shopping Centre with

some of the participants wishing they had packed a coat. Five cars (two T’s and three moderns) set off for Arthurs

Seat.

Traffic was fairly light and we motored on down towards our morning tea stop at Devils Bend Reservoir. A very

pleasant run through the countryside with a mix of sealed and unsealed roads until we turned into Graydens Road. A

fairly ordinary piece of road kept the drivers on their toes and some fairly ordinary driving from some other drivers

ensured that we missed the turn off for the

reservoir. We waved to the Fairnies as we

drove by and duly did a U turn and repeated

the trip down the road from the opposite di-

rection. Robbie jumped from his car when we

stopped and said “It wasn’t that bad when we

came in the modern”.

After a warming cup of tea and a chat we set

off to Arthurs Seat having picked up some

more T Models. We arrived at the museum

bang on twelve and we decided to eat and

then go through the museum.

The museum was a mix of full size cars, hun-

dreds of model cars and as well as large mod-

el ships, sewing machines, old wares and ba-

sically anything to do with cars. Enamel

signs, petrol pumps, badges, photographs and

some old advertising and the list goes on.

People looked, photographed and measured.

After having a good wander around inside

and out we headed off home with the sun high

in the sky having had a great day.

HENRY FORD’S ROLE

IN DEFINING

AMERICAN ATTITUDE TO WAR

At dawn on ANZAC Day April 25, 2015, hundreds of thou-

sands of Australians will again reflect on the Gallipoli Cam-

paign that helped define a young nation; reflecting on a war

that saw 61, 000 of Australia’s finest perish.

A century ago America was not yet involved in the Great War -

indeed it was not until 1917 that the U.S. joined the nations

opposing the Axis forces in Europe.

What is not so widely known is that Henry Ford was an

avowed pacifist who campaigned actively in the political de-

bate over World War I. Henry played a decisive role in galva-

nizing those who were opposed to the call for American troops.

He drummed up support from 1915 onwards using his influ-

ence to promote the cause of those Americans demanding no

role in the War. On the opposite page is an example of Ford’s

propaganda, reprinted from Ford Times April 1916 and mock-

ing the concept of “preparedness” being urged by others.

Less palatably, Ford was also an anti-Semite and a Nazi sym-

pathizer - an unpleasant side of him which became evident

only a few years later. In that second war, Ford’s views were

promoted and admired by Adolf Hitler and conversely despised

by many Americans.

Part of Ford’s campaign against WW I involvement was an

extraordinary “mission to Europe” by ship which has been

written up by John McCool of the History Department at the

University of Kansas:

Amazingly, high-level as well as pacifist meetings

with the shipboard delegates went ahead in Europe,

but there was a strong farcical element and after

three weeks Ford went home “with a bad cold” and

a somewhat lightened wallet.

It is all a fascinating story and we will tell it proper-

ly in the next issue of TTorque. Thanks for Paul

Giving Peace A Chance, Sort

Of January 31, 1916

It ranked, according to one contemporary observer, as “a sub-

limely screwy paragraph in American history.” And while

some later-day historians have been a bit kinder, most still

view it as an absurd spectacle that provides, as biographer

Charles Merz has said, “another demonstration of America’s

abiding faith in slogans.”

Yet, for a two-month period in the winter of 1915-1916,

American automobile magnate Henry Ford, then one of the

richest men in the world, actually thought he could talk the

leaders of Europe into stopping World War I. This experiment

in freelance personal diplomacy was called the “Peace Ship”

and a KU undergraduate was part of the delegation. His name

was Kenneth Pringle, and on January 31, 1916, he returned to

Lawrence to tell of his adventures. It had been quite a trip.

In late 1915, Ford decided that the war in Europe

had gone on long enough, that there had been al-

ready too much killing and suffering, and further-

more, that the US government was entirely wrong-

headed in its strict isolationist stance. “If I can

make automobiles run,” he rhetorically asked a reporter at the time, “why

can’t I steer those people clear of war?” He planned

“to put a stop to the silly killings going on abroad”

by leading a peace delegation across the Atlantic to

negotiate personally with European heads of state.

His favorite slogan became “Out of the trenches by

Christmas, never to go back,” and the American

press was quick to pounce: “Great War Ends

Christmas Day; Ford to Stop It!” read a New York

Tribune headline on November 25, 1915. Having no patience for diplomacy, Ford believed if

he could only get foreign leaders to sit down in a

room, he could make them listen to reason and the

war would end. Straight talk from a no-nonsense

businessman would persuade where diplomatic

doubletalk had failed.

To symbolize America’s unified desire for peace,

Ford invited a remarkably diverse group of people

to accompany him to Europe, including thirty col-

lege students one of whom was Kenneth Pringle

from Kanzas University. ...Pringle, along with his

fellow delegates, would travel to several neutral

European capitals (Oslo, Norway; Stockholm, Swe-

den; Copenhagen, Denmark; and The Hague, The

Netherlands) and speak to like-minded pacifists in

an attempt to open lines of communication between

the belligerent nations. ….


REPORT ON THE FEDERATION

DELEGATES MEETING

HELD IN GEELONG ON 14TH FEBRUARY 2015

Delegates were welcomed by the Western Districts Presi-

dent and members. They started in 1967 and have 300

members, a cap of 320 now.

Trophy Grants of $150.00 were provided to:

Hamilton for their long weekend in June annual ral-

ly.

British Two Stroke Motor bike club for their 20 –

22nd March rally.

Ballarat club for the annual Begonia rally on that

weekend.

Geelong Morris Club for their upcoming event la-

bour Day Weekend.

Mildura for their bi annual Easter time rally.

A Capital Grant was provided to: Central Vic Morris Mi-

nor Club for a computer.

New members who joined the Federation are:

North Central based in St Arnaud. They were mem-

bers when Federation started and have decided to

rejoin. 70 vehicles on the CPS scheme of which 10

are Veterans.

Cool Country Classics from Trentham. They have

been going for 3 years and have 100 members which

is their limit and 20 on a waiting list ready to join.

They have restored vehicles mainly and older exam-

ples.

Wyndham Classic Club. They have been going for a

short time and have 40 members so far.

Australia Day: John and Margaret Davis reported that it

went extremely well and the vehicles on exhibition were a

good cross section of our motoring past, thanks to everyone

who came along. A huge thank you to the Marshalls who

worked from 7:00am till 5:00pm to run the event. Military

vehicles were very well accepted by the public. Arrange-

ments for 2016 have commenced and we will use the same

venues.

Golden Oldies Vintage Only Run: This will start from Ma-

rong picnic and head North East for a week of sight seeing.

All planned out and only final touches to go. 30 entries so

far. RACV are sponsoring and providing a back up vehicle.

The Rootes Group have downloaded information on 60,000

Hillmans.

Club Permit Scheme was discussed and only one club re-

ported that they had not received the new requirements

from Vicroads. All seemed to be settling in to the new .

AOMC DELEGRATE’S REPORT

Meeting Date 16th. February 2015

A copy of the minutes of this meeting are available on the

AOMC website at www.aomc.asn.au. The summary be-

low contains my understanding of the main items which I

believe are of interest to the members of the MTFCV.

New Delegates / Member Clubs. 6 new delegates, 3 visitors

and 0 new member clubs were welcomed.

Treasurers Report. The Treasurers report was presented to the

Delegates. The Association is in a healthy financial state. The

annual car shows commence this week. The Treasurer requested

that all car club members attending as spectators identify them-

selves as members for Tax purposes,

Guest Speaker. Ron Mays spoke on Welding Myths and Facts.

Stresses in metals due to Tension, Compression and Sheer were

discussed together with the importance of pre heating prior to

welding. Many examples of brittle fractures and cracks were

highlighted.

Ron also talked about welding requirements relating to vehicles

including those required by CAMS and ADR’s.

Presidents Report. Ian pointed out that this year there was no

Robert Shannon Foundation Award made. This award consists

of a cash grant for young enthusiasts (under 25) to assist with a

restoration project.

Club permit scheme report. Rod Amos reported that the new

rules for the CPS took effect from Jan. 31st. 2015. Rod had con-

cerns with the requirement on the forms for clubs to declare that

the vehicle is safe to use on the road. VicRoads have now re-

moved this phrase from the forms.

There was concern from clubs regarding the signatories required

on forms. Rod advised it does not matter what the designation on

the form is, as long as the correct signatory is registered with

VicRoads. Rod advises clubs to cross the designation out and

write in what the club wants the designation to be in their case.

There was a spike in applications prior to Jan.31 which resulted

in VicRoads running out of log books and plates.

VicRoads are looking at the requirement for a RWC when trans-

ferring from club to club.

Rod read out an advice from VicRoads to Licensed Vehicle Test-

ers, which merely states “older vehicles must be tested in accord-

ance with standards of the day”.

General Business / Delegates reports. A new museum has

opened in Colac with 40 trucks.

requirements and looking forward to the highly modified going

over to M plates. Some discussion on vehicles changed from

Club to Club and if a RWC was required for the post 1.1.1949

ones. It was agreed that Clubs are picking up the responsibility

of ensuring they are safe and as such, a fresh check under the

new requirements of VSI33 would be best.

Federation is going to print the Vehicle check sheets and dis-

claimer into a 3 page carbonless book for clubs to use for those

to the end of December 1948, for checking tractors and vehicles

they are concerned about the safety of. This would provide a

bound copy for future reference. The Committee feel that CPS

has occupied our time for 10 years now and this is as good as it

is going to be so lets enjoy it and move onto other matters.

The President thanked his fellow Committee members for their

hard work and involvement in the CPS since 2005.

Newsletters can be sent electronically to the Federation WWW

site to be loaded for all to see.

Picnic days coming up on the 28 & 29th March at Mortlake and

Wunghnu and the 12th April at Scoresby Park.

Next Meeting will be at Altona Scout Camp, not Deniliquin.

New vehicles and restored vehicles will be on display at the Mel-

bourne Show Grounds from the 26th March to the 29th March

2015.

The Swap was discussed and the increase in costs and downturn

in income was highlighted. This will be discussed further at the

May Delegates' meeting after the Swap Committee has consid-

ered and recommended price increases for both sites and public.

At this stage Sunday may remain at $5.00 for public.

A trial will be made to download a real time video of the weather

conditions in Bendigo at 6:00am Saturday of the Swap. People

can view that and then decide to come or not.

Some site holders have lost their sites as they parked elsewhere

on the grounds than their site.

Kookaburra Avenue will not be closed to traffic due to excessive

Council charges.

1924 Tourer / 4 Door. Engine # 455404 which has a starter motor

type hogs

head on it. This vehicle is ideally suited to someone that knows Model

T's as it just needs some minor mechanical work and tidying up the

electrics to completely finish a very lovely solid vehicle.

All of the body work / trim is completed and in excellent near new

condition. Some mechanicals have been upgraded and of special interest is the

rear accessory brakes that are cable operated via the standard brake pedal /

handbrake.

Some external items are needed to get the fully reconditioned motor to run and

I have listed all the work / parts required to do so. The car sits on wire wheels

with good tyres. Some spare parts applicable to this 1924 vehicle come with it including two front fenders.

The previous owner had moved away from building this to a 100% original factory spec car to more of a reliable upgraded version. It

has an electric fuel pump, engine cooling fan and a 12 Volt system These items could be converted back to stock if desired or simply

retained. The previous owners mechanic is also available to consult.
