The bottom of the lift hill for the Hoosier Hurricane is 21’ off the ground, the top is 98’ off the ground and the lift hill itself is 208’ long.

1. What is the length of the “footprint” (horizontal distance) of the lift hill?

2. Use trigonometry to find the measure of the angle (in degrees) of the lift hill compared to the ground.

3. Convert the above answer to radians.

4. What is the angle of the back of your seat as you ascend the lift hill?

The bottom of the lift hill for the Cornball Express is 20’ off the ground, the top is 78’ off the ground and the lift hill itself is 175’ long.

5. What is the length of the “footprint” (horizontal distance) of the lift hill?

6. Use trigonometry to find the measure of the angle (in degrees) of the lift hill compared to the ground.

7. Convert the above answer to radians.

8. Which of the above coasters has a steeper lift hill?

9. Find the angle for the lift of the Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain compared to the ground.

The Hoosier Hurricane is 3000’ long. The lumber on a wooden roller coaster track needs regular maintenance. It needs to be replaced as the wood deteriorates. The lumber (Grade B) and fasteners required to replace the faulty wood costs $100 for every 8’ of track.

1. How much does it cost for the materials to replace the entire track of the Hoosier Hurricane?

The lumber mentioned above lasts 7 years on the roller coaster. Lumber comes in different grades. A higher grade of lumber (Grade A) will last 11 years on the roller coaster, but costs $100 for every 5’ of track.

2. How much does it cost for the materials to replace the entire track with Grade A lumber?

The Hoosier Hurricane opened in 1994.

3. Using the information above, how much money would have been spent on the materials to replace the lumber using Grade B lumber*?

4. How much money would have been spent on the materials to replace the lumber using Grade B lumber*?

5. Which grade of lumber should Indiana Beach use to replace the track on the Hoosier Hurricane, and why?

*assume the price of the lumber has stayed the same all these years although it obviously has not.

1. As you roll over a peak, you rise off your seat and you feel ________________.

2. The shape of a roller coaster hill is called a ________________.

3. As you fall down a roller coaster hill, you ________________.

4. The force of ________________ pulls you down the roller coaster peaks.

5. The ________________ force slows you down throughout your coaster trip.

6. When you are the highest above the ground, you have the most ________________.

7. When you are moving the fastest, you have the most ________________.

8. Because of your speed at the bottom of a roller coaster hill, you have enough ________________ to climb to the top of the next hill.

9. An inward ________________ is required to make you turn.

10. Your body has ________________ and, therefore, tries to move in a straight line when a roller coaster track turns.

11. An empty coaster and a loaded coaster will travel down the hill at the same speed. Therefore, we can say that a coaster’s speed is not affected by its ________________.

The Cornball Express was the second major wooden roller coaster built at Indiana Beach. Cornball Jones is the mascot for this ride. At one time, it was voted as the #1 wooden roller coaster in the world. Take a ride on the Cornball Express and express your feelings in the answers to the following questions. Use complete sentences.

1. Where on the ride did you feel you were going the fastest? Why?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Where on the ride did you feel like you were lifted off your seat?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. How did the ride cause that feeling?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Look at the supports that hold the track in place. Why do you think there are more supports on curves than in straight portions of the track?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Centrifugal force is a force that causes an object moving in a circular path to move out and away from the center of its path. If you swing a bucket of water quickly in a circle, centrifugal force is what keeps the water inside the bucket.

5. How could you increase the centrifugal force felt by passengers in a train without increasing the speed of the train?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. If you increased the centrifugal force in the helix turn, how would you have to change the support structure of the track?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take a ride on Dodgem. Then answer the following questions using complete sentences.

1. If your car is hit head on by another car, what direction is your car accelerated? How do you know?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. If your car is hit head on by another car, what determines whether your car continues to move forward or backward after the collision?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. If you were riding in the only car with a much smaller mass than all the other cars, how would your ride be different? Explain why.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Describe your body’s reaction to several different collisions. Example, how do you react if you are hit from behind vs. hit from the side?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. What is the reason for having rubber bumpers around the cars?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. How might the ride change if the bumpers were metal?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Based upon your collision experience, prepare an argument for the use of seat belts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. What is the role of friction between the cars and the floor?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. Is kinetic energy conserved during a collision between two or more cars? Explain and offer evidence to support your view.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Is the total mechanical energy (K.E. + P.E.) of the cars conserved? Explain.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Write a sonnet about your visit to Indiana Beach. Remember that a sonnet uses iambic pentameter (lines consisting of 10 syllables, unstressed and stressed).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is an example of iambic pentameter: I think I’ll ride the roller coaster first.

Use the following rhyme scheme: ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG.

Use at least one alliteration (example: the zooming, zipping, Zero G). Include at least one simile (using ‘like’ or ‘as’) and one metaphor. And include at least one onomatopoeia (examples: pop, boom, clank).

After you write your sonnet, identify the couplet by drawing an arrow toward it.

Indiana Beach patrons have been feeding the carp for decades. When the old Galaxi Roller Coaster would do test runs in the spring, carp would start showing up for their feeding frenzy. Is it natural for the fish to gorge themselves on fish food and popcorn? Write an opinion article on whether or not you think feeding the carp at Indiana Beach is a good idea. You may use the back of this page. When writing your article, consider using a thesis statement, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Indiana Beach relies on advertisements to help bring visitors to the park. Even before proving “There’s More Than Corn in Indiana,” Indiana Beach was known as the “Riviera of the Midwest.” Choose the attraction you most enjoy and highlight it in an advertisement. You may pick a ride, food stand, game, or any other part of Indiana Beach that strikes your fancy. Submit a script for a 30-second radio spot, a billboard design, or a storyboard for a 30-second television advertisement. Your ad should utilize both emotion and logic. Don’t forget to include a Call to Action (what do you want the listener/viewer to do?) If you’re writing a radio spot or television advertisement, make sure you have a great Attention Grabber. Most importantly, who is your target audience? You may use the back of this page.

You have now finished! Enjoy the rest of your day!
