BUENOS AIRES, Dec 1:

Leaders of India, China andRussia have called for reformingmultilateral institutions, includ-ing the UN and WTO, as theyunderscored the benefits of amultilateral trading system andan open world economy forglobal growth and prosperityduring a trilateral meeting theyheld after a gap of 12 years.

Prime Minister NarendraModi, Chinese President XiJinping and Russian PresidentVladimir Putin held the trilateralmeeting on Friday, the secondamong the three countries after agap of 12 years, on the sidelinesof the G-20 summit here to dis-cuss cooperation in variousareas.

"Excellent meeting of the RIC(Russia, India, China) Trilateral.President Putin, President XiJinping and I discussed a widerange of subjects that would fur-ther cement the friendshipbetween our nations and enhanceworld peace," Modi said.

The Russia-India-China (RIC)meeting came hours after PrimeMinister Modi, his Japanesecounterpart Shinzo Abe and USPresident Donald Trump heldtheir first trilateral meeting on themargins of the summit.

"Deepening engagementwith valued development part-ners. President Vladimir Putin,President Xi Jinping and PM@narendramodi participate inthe RIC (Russia, India, China)trilateral in Buenos Aires.@KremlinRussia," the PrimeMinister's Office tweeted.

In a statement, the ExternalAffairs Ministry said the threeleaders exchanged views onexpanding mutual cooperationin international forums, and toencourage greater interactionamong the three countries.

"They agreed on the impor-tance of reform and strengthen-ing of multilateral institutionswhich have benefitted theworld, including the UnitedNations, WTO and well-estab-

lished as well as new globalfinancial institutions. Theyunderscored the benefits of amultilateral trading system andan open world economy forglobal growth and prosperity," itsaid.

The three leaders agreed tohave regular consultations tojointly promote internationaland regional peace and stability,to strengthen cooperation

through BRICS (Brazil, Russia,India, China and South Africa),the SCO (Shanghai CooperationOrganisation) and the East AsiaSummit (EAS) mechanisms, toaddress global challenges suchas terrorism and climate change,and to encourage peaceful reso-lution of all differences, thestatement added.

They also acknowledged theimportance of cooperation in

RIC format and agreed to holdfurther such trilateral meetingson multilateral occasions.

Briefing the media about theRIC meeting, Foreign SecretaryVijay Gokhale later said the tri-lateral was a "very positivemeeting".

"Prime Minister thankedPresident Putin for initiating thiseffort and all three leaders feltthat given our respective roles asemerging economies and emerg-ing markets, given our respec-tive roles and influence in theworld in terms of maintainingpeace and stability in the regionthat it was perhaps importantthat the three countries shouldcooperate and coordinate in var-ious areas in order to contributeto global peace and prosperity,"Gokhale said.

The views expressed by allthree leaders were very similarand "they all felt that weshould work together to steerglobal economic governance,"he said.

"They felt that the threecountries should work togetherwhere we could promote peaceand stability in regional crisis,"the foreign secretary said.(PTI)
