• Creating awareness that space effects teaching
o Building expertise throughout projects in EDU
o Incorporating knowledge into dissemination within professionalisation initiatives eg.
online modules ‘teaching at KU Leuven’
o Stimulating teachers to use available facilities for interactive and collaborative learning
in a optimal/-um way
o Structural cooperation between facilities and educational units
o Facilitating teachers to indicate didactic needs
o Professionalise planners how to link the didactic needs in reservations to be made
• Projects/Living Labs are important to capture the needs and to see what works eg. focus
groups, surveys AND to develop tools eg webtool ALINA -> ‘to plant the seeds for scaling-
up’
KU Leuven fully takes into account the didactic needs and preferences of teachers in the
process of assigning teaching spaces

• Agora-project (2009-2013)
o www.kuleuven.be/agora
o Silent study space, flexible space, group work rooms, chill & refill
o Tension between:
• Building | Concept
• Estate department | Stakeholders (incl. students)
• Default setting | Innovation
• Formal monofunctional spaces | Informal flexible spaces
• Default facility programme | Extensive opening hours

o https://set.kuleuven.be/infrastructuur/quadrivium
o large auditorium for 600 people,
multifunctional seminar rooms, collaborative learning
areas and practical labs
• ALINA-project (2015-2017) + STEAM-ALINA (2017-2018)
o Late involvement in Quadrivium-project
o How to guarantee timely involvement of stakeholders?
• defining ownership
• composition and role of design team
• defining expertise needed in different phases of project, e.g.
