Retail Prices of Major Fertilizer Grades The retail prices of major fertilizer grades on a year-on-year basis indicate the behavior of prices paid by consumers during a given period. In 2015, the retail prices of the five major fertilizer grades such as urea, ammosul, ammophos, di-ammophos, complete fertilizer and muriate of potash were lower than their respective prices in 2014. Di-ammophos continued to post the highest retail price in 2015 at P1,539.18 per bag. However, it recorded the biggest price reduction at 5.58 percent. Retail prices of urea, complete fertilizer and muriate of potash ranged from P1,008.89 to P1,286.48 per bag. Complete fertilizer had the least price cut at 0.88 percent. Ammosul and ammophos were priced the lowest at P565.61 and P976.02 per bag, respectively. The downtrend in the prices of urea, ammosul and muriate of potash ranged from 4.49 percent to 4.67 percent. A 3.57 percent price drop was noted for ammophos (Tables 1a -1b). Based on the 2006 prices, the increments in the 2015 retail prices of complete and muriate of potash fertilizers were the highest at 55.56 percentage points and 60.16 percentage points, respectively. In contrast, the least price gains were registered in urea at 12.23 percentage points and di-ammophos at 13.75 percentage points in 2015 (Table 1c).

Input-Output Ratio The nitrogen/palay price ratio is an indicator of how much output (palay) is needed to pay for a unit of input (nitrogen fertilizer). In 2015, the nitrogen/palay price ratio slightly increased to 2.75 from 2.49 in 2014. It implies that in 2015, about 2.75 kilograms of palay was produced to pay for a kilogram of nitrogen fertilizer. By quarter, the highest ratio in 2015 was noted in the fourth quarter at 2.83, followed by 2.81 in the first quarter. The lowest was posted in third quarter at 2.65 (Table 2).

Nominal and Real Wage Rate Indices in Agriculture

The agricultural wage rate is an indicator of progress and welfare of farm workers. Wage rate indices determine whether farm workers are getting better-off or worse-off through the increase or decrease in the wages they received over the years compared to a base year. In the agricultural sector, the nominal wage rate index moved up to 161.8 percent in 2015. This means that the wage rate paid to farm workers in 2015 was 61.8 index points higher than the 2006 wage rate. In real terms, wage rate index rose to 114.4 percent in 2015 or a gain of 14.4 index points from the base year record (Tables 3a-3b). Among the agricultural workers, palay farm workers received the biggest increment in nominal wage rate at 69.9 index points in 2015. This was followed by corn farm workers with wage gain of 65.3 index points. The increases in the wage rates of coconut and sugarcane farm workers were 44.0 index points and 42.4 index points, respectively. In real terms, the wage rate of palay farm workers in 2015 was higher by 22.0 index points from the base year record. Corn farm workers had a wage gain of 16.8 index points. Wage rates of coconut and sugarcane farm workers improved in 2015 and were slightly above 2006 wage rates. Across regions, the 2015 agricultural wage rate in nominal terms posted the biggest gain in Cagayan Valley at 93.3 index points while the lowest increment was noted in ARMM at 50.8 index points. In real terms, the wage rates of agricultural workers in all regions, except ARMM, were above the 2006 wage levels. Cagayan Valley recorded the biggest real wage gain at 34.3 index points. Palay farm workers in Cagayan Valley enjoyed the highest nominal wage increment at 113.5 index points in 2015. In real terms, wage gain was 48.4 index points. In addition, the increases in the nominal wage rates received by palay farm workers were also high in Central Visayas, SOCCSKSARGEN and Caraga ranging from 81.1 to 86.8 index points. The nominal wage rates of corn farm workers in Central Luzon and Cagayan Valley were above the base year records by 88.9 index points and 88.0 index points, respectively. Correspondingly, the real wage increases were 32.9 index points and 30.6 index points. Meanwhile, the real wage
