IL4’s green fingersNow the weather is brighter, IL4 have been able to take advantage of the items ordered via the Morrison’s ‘Let it Grow’ scheme vouchers. We have planted a selection of flowers and vegetables and have tidied up the plot outside our classroom.

We have made some labels to show everyone what is growing where and it is looking like a real garden now. We are expecting a good crop of strawberries as there are plenty of flowers blooming. We are just hoping that the bees have visited and have been able to pollinate them.

The sunflowers are gaining strength in the classroom and the peas have just gone out. We have shared any extra seedlings with SL2 who also have a gardening project.

“I love Lego! I like making him”

“I like trying new faces on Mr Potato Head”

“I love the Students Council board!”

There are lots of new symbols around school to help us be more independent with our communication. We now have a Communication Function for the Term. This term is asking for help and problem solving. We are all having loads of fun using our communication!

We are looking forward to chips from our potatoes served with garden peas and carrots with a side salad of lettuce and radish, maybe SL2 will provide the tomatoes.

Inscape House School is lucky enough to have just installed some outdoor gym equipment, and IL5 are even more lucky as it is right outside their classroom! There are 4 pieces of

gym equipment, ranging from cross trainers to leg stretchers. The class members of IL5 have really enjoyed using the equipment so far. James says “it is fun, entertaining and it takes my mind off bad things”. Luke says “I like it because it helps keep me fit and calm too”. Josh says “I like the adventure playground but it is mainly for younger people and this is fun for the older students”. Teacher Helen says “The gym equipment has had a really positive impact on the class. We are using it to build small bursts of exercise into the class’s daily routine. This is not only good for their fitness and health, but is a new and interesting addition to their daily sensory diets, and helps with them being able to regulate their emotions independently. The staff also have fun on it too!”

Our new outdoor gym

Luke Ireland was the first pupil from IL5 who had the opportunity to do some work experience at Barton Airport, Manchester. His visit included a tour of the control tower, sitting in the fire truck whist wearing a firemans’ uniform and watching a helicopter take off. Luke spent time learning about the complexities of working in the control tower and understanding the way in which the fire brigade work in an airport setting. Luke described his work experience as “lots of fun” and said his ideal job would be to “plane spot all day.” Well done Luke from all of IL5!

During this year we have been very busy in Post 16 with setting up and running our own Business Enterprise project and we have been extremely lucky to have had an extra pair of hands in the form of Maggie. Since September Maggie (a volunteer from John Lewis) has been working with the Post 16 team and we can’t thank her enough for her hard work, enthusiasm and for the skills she has given to the project. On behalf of the Post 16 team I would like to say a massive thank you to Maggie and to John Lewis (Cheadle) for allowing her the time to come and help.

“Since September we have been working withMaggie on Wednesday afternoons, she has been teaching us how to use a sewing machine and has taught us how to make many different items, for example we have made draft excluders, peg bags and cushions.

These items were sold to various people and at the Christmas fair and the funds that were raised were re-invested into the business enterprise project which enabled us to purchase a shed for the gardening equipment at school.

“Maggie has been a brilliant help and she has taught me new skills and I have really enjoyed my Wednesday afternoons with Maggie.”C4, Post 16

“I joined the team in November, normally textiles are something I’m not interested in but straight away Maggie made me feel welcome.”Joe C4 Post 16

Thanks to Maggie’s help and the hard work of the students we have been making and selling the following items; car demisters, cushions, bags, draft excluders, occasion’s cards, cakes and pizzas. Many of our products have been created by reusing and recycling unwanted materials. Please come over to Inscape Reception and visit our stall, you never know what you might find! The profits we aim to make in the future will be used towards a special end of term trip for the Post 16 students.

Callum Rose in IL7 has started Inscape Magazine a weekly publication about life at school. This is how it came about.

I stumbled upon the magazine ideapurely by chance when I came into the ReviewRoom where my parents, Joanne and Ian, weresitting and looked closely at the whiteboard. Isaw something that said ‘talks of making a school magazine’ and that just set me off. This made me want to change what I did for Enrichment, so themagazine idea was a dream come true!

I thought I could give people a chance to see the REAL Inscape, what you see, what interests people have, their favourite recipes, favourite

shows and jokes, this got me on the wagon train, and before you know it, it’d turned into a gravy train. It was a-rolling out on the road to success, and it certainly caught the heart of people reading it.

The magazine includes articles on:Football Confidential – all the gossip, all the news, all the movesRecipe Page – cut back on salt, fat and sugar with these recipes and tipsWicked Watchers – TV catch-upRose’s Review – or you could say ‘At Home with Cally’ as it’s about what’s going on in my life!Cracking Up – jokes for all, scary jokes, sad jokes, HAPPY jokes, laughy jokes, and even crazy jokes!Rose’s Report – School news and eventsDear Callum – postbag page gives people a chance to tell me what they think about the magazine.

Inscape House School Residential Trip

The visit to Lakeside YMCA Outdoor Activity Centre by pupils from IL1, IL2, and IL3 was a great success and a good time was had by all. The pupils gained enormously from physical exercise, opportunities to cooperate and problem solve and by being away from home and away from family, some of them for the first time.

Activities ranged from canoeing, climbing, fell walking, zip wire, campfire and blindfold obstacle course. These activities required our pupils to challenge themselves and to find their own courage. It was great to see and hear pupils encourage each other to do something and to help each other when things got a bit tough. The instructors at Lakeside are all qualified and well trained and were able to provide a quality experience for our pupils.

Above all, we all had a lot of fun.

On Sunday 11th May a minibus set off from school for a family activity day in Liverpool. After virtual monsoon conditions on the motorway (Thanks for driving Megan!) we arrived at Space Port in brilliant sunshine and met up with two other families.Everyone enjoyed looking round Space Port, particularly the planetarium show about the life of an astronaut. There was also a special exhibition about Dr Who and the chance for photo opportunities with daleks!

After lunch we boarded the Mersey Ferry for a very bracing round trip- and the sun still shone!

One Sea... don’t drop litter

Michael, Jamie, Michael and Musa of C1 Post 16 have been working hard this term to create a life sized collage entitled ‘One Sea…Don’t Drop litter’. The aim of the project is to educate the viewer about the impact the litter we drop has on our seas and wildlife. The students have been experimenting with all types of materials and textures to create this colourful piece of art.

Children and Families Act 2014 The government is introducing a new approach to the way children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families are supported. The Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan is an exciting new way of working that puts children, young people and families at the very centre of the assessment process, to make sure that your views are not only heard but also understood. This is based on person centred planning which is what we have been using in our reviews and most meetings for the past two years. In the future your local council will have to draw up an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC) instead of a statement of SEN, publish a ‘local offer’ of service and offer a personal budget.

What is different about an Education, Health and Care plan?An Education, Health and Care plan looks at life beyond education and brings the different services together, the main differences are:

and involvement from parents, carers, children and young people in the process.

across education, health and care services.

each child/young person

people at the heart of the changes.

When will the change happen? This change is going to happen over the next year, and we will continue to provide you with updates throughout the year.

What are the advantages of this change? It is going to help bring services together to make it easier for children and young people to receive support from health services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Occupational Therapy , etc.

The plans will now be implemented until the children and young people are 25 which should make the transition into adult servicescollege easier and smoother.

How will this affect us since our children and young people already have statements? You will not need to go through the assessment process again, there will be a transition process where existing statements will move over to EHCP. Appeal routes remain the same as before, and in essence there will little change however plans will now be in place until the age of 25. This applies to all children and young people unless they decide to attend university, which will make the transition into P16 and college education smoother and easier to manage.

How much Pupil Premium does the school receive?

The funding allocation per pupil changes each year, but it is a flat rate for all pupils. In the 2014 to 2015 financial year, schools will receive the following funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years:£1,300 for primary-aged pupils£935 for secondary-aged pupilsSchools will also receive £1,900 for each looked-after pupil who:has been looked after for 1 day or morewas adopted from care on or after 30 December 2005, or left care under: a special guardianship order a residence order

I know my child has such narrow food choices that I have not considered school dinners.

Your children don’t have to eat school dinners, you can still provide packed lunches, but it is important that you register for them so they can gain from the extra funding.

What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is allocated to local authorities and schools with pupils on roll that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years. The funding allocation per pupil changes each year.

What can schools do with the Pupil Premium?

Our school has the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way we think will best address the individual needs of our students.

Who is eligible for Pupil Premium?

If you think that your income is low and you receive any of the benefits listed then call 0845 155 1019 to apply for free school meals, this is linked to the Pupil Premium which will be triggered if you are eligible.

(Income Related)
